Life slipped away from Senator Robert Kennedy early on the morning of June 6, 25 hours after he was shot by a gunman in a kitchen corridor of the Ambassador Hotel. The death of the vibrant senator was hard to explain to a land overrun by violence and a family numbed by tragedy.
“All I can say is, good Lord, what is this all about?” lamented Richard Cardinal Cushing, a friend of the Kennedys. “We could continue our prayers that it would never happen again, but we did that before.”
The accused assassin, Jerusalem-born Sirhan Sirhan, waited for Kennedy while the senator gave his California primary victory speech. Sirhan allegedly fired twice with a .22-caliber revolver that could be purchased easily for $32. Eight others were wounded. The gunman was wrestled to the ground by eight Kennedy friends, including pro football star Roosevelt Grier, Olympic champion Rafer Johnson and author George Plimpton.
The murder, just two months after the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., fuelled new conspiracy theories, but authorities said Sirhan acted alone. His diary showed him to be virulently anti-Jewish, and Kennedy was a strong supporter of Israel.
Kennedy had refused police protection in Los Angeles and his own bodyguard was unarmed. Congress later moved to provide Secret Service protection to all major presidential candidates.
The Human Spirit
As a comparison to the shooting of his brother, John, I have included this chart based on the timing of the assassination of Robert Kennedy.
The Sun-Venus-Mars conjunction, trine to the Ascendant seems to show that Kennedy (Sun) was well liked, by both women (Venus) and men (Mars), at that precise moment (Ascendant), In fact, just before the shooting, he had been thanking his workers for the good job they’d done in helping to secure the California Primary election.
But also operating at that time was another Yod, pointing at Saturn. As we have seen in John’s chart, the Yods seem to indicate which individuals, or what groups, were behind the killing. So, who are to blame this time?
In Mundane Astrology, Saturn represents: The minor state executives and law enforcement authorities; Civil Service employees; land owners and mine operators.
Sirhan Sirhan may have been the hand holding the gun, but I think ‘someone else’ pulled the trigger. It is a well-documented fact that Bobby wanted to destroy the power of the Secret Service agencies. According to a 1992 television programme, Sirham may have been ‘programmed’ to carry out a shooting diversion, but that someone else, standing just behind Kennedy, actually shot the bullets that entered his body and eventually killed him. Yet, according to the news report of the day, no one else in his entourage was carrying weapons. The subsequent eye-witness accounts told of a young man and a young woman in a polka-dot dress leaving the scene of the crime, shouting, “We shot Kennedy!”
About the killers and/or their directors, I would say: You are afraid that people will inhibit you and keep you from getting what you want, or that they will try to control you in ways you don’t like. (Saturn in Aries)
You may not have enough money, but it is more likely that you are motivated by fear of not having enough. You work hard to get what you want, because for you that is a basic part of the value of everything. You may envy people who seem to get what they want more readily. (Saturn in 2nd)
One real problem is that you may be quite unable to deal with your anger. Instead of blowing up, you hold it in and get quietly angrier, which may lead to lingering bitterness and resentment. (Mars Sextile Saturn)
When you are with others, you keep to yourself, for you are somewhat shy. You may feel that people do not like you very much, or that others will always be more popular. (Moon in Virgo)
You love anything mysterious, such as detective stories and crime novels. This is a reflection of your even greater love of secrets and hidden knowledge. (Moon in 8th)
You feel that somehow you must keep everything in your life under tight control, that if you let go, the whole structure will fall apart. (Saturn Inconjunct Uranus)
Your imaginative side tends to be transformed into nervousness, fear and irrational anxieties. The most negative manifestation of this aspect is a feeling that you have to keep a tight lid on yourself and that if you look inside yourself too closely, you will find only emptiness and disintegration. (Saturn Inconjunct Neptune)
You may have developed a cynical attitude toward the world in general. You may be intolerant of your own and others’ weaknesses, and you may take advantage of every opportunity, even if it means hurting someone else. (Saturn Inconjunct Pluto)
If only one of the Kennedy brothers had been assassinated, suspicion would have fallen on one or more of the ‘usual suspects’. (The film JFK showed that there were a great number of them.) But after years of in-fighting with Bobby Kennedy as Attorney-General, I’m sure that J. Edgar Hoover didn’t want to have a repeat of John’s presidency. Hoover was director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) when both John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated.
