Hieroglyphics
Recordings from the annuls of the past,
Engraved on pillars of stone and cement,
Ask how else the news could have been broadcast
Down through the centuries to the present.
Intuition led the decipher-ers,
Not by the nose but by the inner ear,
Giving them the insight of sorcerers
To read between the lines like an old seer.
Hieroglyphics stand the trial of time,
Etched in the meanderings of their sign,
Perpetuating the Spirit’s prime
Attribute of life, pure and crystalline.
Sentenced to the rock of eternity,
They seek understanding from you and me.
Sonnet XI

Years ago, I came across the term ‘glyph’ referring to an astrological birth chart: “What’s a glyph?” says I; turns out that the symbols for the signs and planets are glyphs. That gave me the idea for this poem.
