What’s With All This Testing?
The speech happened last night in Tulsa. The crowd was smaller than Trump had hoped for and there were anti-racist protests outside. Not a great start to his 2020 presidential campaign.
But then in the middle of the speech, Trump suggested that they stop testing for COVID-19 because every time they do any testing, more and more people end up with a positive diagnosis.
WHAT?!
Now, in Canada, and especially in the province of Ontario, we were encouraged at the beginning of June to get tested, because it is considered better to know how wide-spread COVID-19 really is, rather than assuming that everything is alright.
Naturally, if the province is testing 25,000 people a day, there will be higher numbers of people with the novel coronavirus than previously (when only those with symptoms where allowed the test). But this way asymptomatic individuals can be made to quarantine for the duration.
Trump’s remark shows that he understands the dynamics of the situation, but he just wants it to go away, so he can concentrate on winning the election in November. And if that means ignoring (and/or under-reporting), so be it. Who cares if more people die?
