It Took Me an Extra Day to Track This Idiom Down:

“Out of Whole Cloth”

At 4:30 yesterday morning, I got a saying stuck in my head, that wouldn’t go away. By the time I got up (8:00 am), it had morphed into “whole sailcloth”. That sounds a lot like ‘wholesale cloth’ which is why Google wasn’t much help in tracking it down. (I had originally heard the phrase in the BBC program “Escape to the Country” and it seemed to suggest that it was something ‘wholly new or unexpected’.)

On a YouTube video, aired today of an MSNBC program last night, the phrase was used to explain Trump’s lies. A-ha, says I: that was the reason for my early morning suggestion from spirit. I was intending to use it as the lead into my post from yesterday.

There, mystery solved.
