I’d Recognize That Song Anywhere

Outlander Closing Credits (Season 7, Episode 16)

It’s part of a plot development going forward for the next season of Outlander. (Spoiler alert:) When Claire first had her baby, Faith, she sang “I Do Like To Be Beside the Seaside” to her. We see this in retrospect from Season 2. Then Claire hears Frances singing this song quietly to herself, a lightbulb goes off in her head. How could this young girl know a song from the 20th Century? Coincidently, Frances’ mother’s name was Faith, too. Ah, so. Faith hadn’t died, after all. And Frances must be Claire and Jamie’s granddaughter. What a twist of fate!

Starting from the chorus, this song has a certain rhythm to it that put me in mind of another song:

The Sherman Brothers must have unconsciously borrowed the music hall hit from 1906 and updated it to “Jolly Holliday” almost 60 years later.

Even Linda McCartney got in on the act, by borrowing on the title: B-Side To Seaside.

Had enough, yet? If so, I’ll stop.
