Kodachrome (2017)
Sometimes, I choose Netflix shows because of their titles. This one caught my eye because I’m presently having a Fujifilm developed through one of the last remaining shops to do that in Toronto. We’ll see what comes out of that 35mm film shortly. In the meantime, this story rings true at so many levels.
Like all good films, the initial conflict gets resolved by the end. Someone dying can do that. It’s not just the ‘aren’t I saintly’ variety of father that wants closure, even assholes need to. What struck me about this film is how unrelenting the characters were. Every one stayed in their corners until the very last images (the slide show revealed exactly what I thought it would: pictures of the son when he was very young).
Shelburne, Ontario substitutes for Parsons, Kansas, the place where the Kodachrome developing ends, which means that the countryside seen on the road trip is totally Southern Ontario. Enjoy the ride, folks.
