It’s a Strange Question to be Asked:

How Proud are You to be a Canadian?

It goes without saying, doesn’t it? Most people who have dual citizenship will definitely use their Canadian passport to visit other countries because Canada has the best reputation in most places.

But the question raises another issue: would a Canadian relinquish his or her citizenship in order to become an American? That has been the main thorn in the flesh of Hollywood actors and actresses forever.

Most regular Canadians have no such qualms. They don’t have to sublimate themselves in another countries culture just to survive. The 22 years that I lived in the UK, for example, didn’t make me think of giving up my Canadian roots, which is just as well when I moved back home to Canada in 2007.

But, just to put this move into perspective, I was treated as an immigrant by Canadian employers anyway. “Do you have any recent employment history in Canada?” was a frequent interview question.

All I know is that, even in my past life memories, Canada has played a very significant role in my history. How could I give that up? Simple answer: I couldn’t.
