“I Plead the 5th”

The 5th Amendment

The American public can be forgiven if they think that this amendment is a ‘Get-out-of-Jail Free” card.

In reality, it is a protection of an individual’s right to remain silent when being interviewed about a crime. This amendment along with the 14th Amendment (having your Miranda rights read to you when being arrested) are procedures that ensure a person accused of a crime is not ‘tricked’ into expressing guilt for that crime.

Trump pleaded the Fifth more than 440 times during his deposition in New York, answering only a question about what his name is, NBC reports.
