When It Launched, People Thought It was a Prank

Gmail (April 1, 2004)

It’s hard to believe that it has been 20 years since the launch of this email service. Twenty years!

I arbitrarily set the clock for 1 second past midnight PDT for the service launch, just to see what aspects were operating that day. I should have known that two inconjuncts were in operation, with only one lasting all day.

Sun Inconjunct Jupiter (definitely)

This can be an extremely useful aspect, if you learn to have more self-control in what you do. Jupiter is always high-spirited, wanting to do and encounter everything and enjoy life thoroughly. Yet in some combinations, it means that you are unwilling to work for what you want. You may feel that you are such a fine person that you deserve to have everything done for you. Certainly you are worthwhile in your own way, but that doesn’t give you a right to be taken care of without contributing your share. As with all Sun-Jupiter energies, if you learn to support others, to make them feel good and happy in your presence, you will get their support as well. Then there will always be someone to help you when you need it. But if you act arrogant[ly] toward others, they may not stay around to support you.

Saturn Inconjunct Ascendant (perhaps)

With this aspect you probably have a rather serious attitude toward life and other people. It may be quite difficult to simply go out and have a good time. You want to be serious and to spend all your time performing significant tasks. This attitude may have developed because you were discouraged from enjoying yourself when you were younger. You may have been made to feel that only work is important, that play serves no useful purpose. This is not true, however, because playing has a positive and useful function in the development of the adult mind and body. Not only does it serve to release tensions, but it also actually helps train you in social and physical skills that will be useful in any work you do later.

(Is it me, or do these descriptions fit the whole ethos at Google?)

So, not an April Fool’s prank, after all.

Notice the typo in the location name? That’s my April Fool’s prank. Also Daylight Savings didn’t start until April 4th that year, so the Saturn/Ascendant inconjunct did not occur at midnight.
