Nicholas Winton (May 19, 1909 – July 1, 2015)
This film, from 2024,highlights the efforts of one man (with the help of others) to rescue children from Prague in 1939, before war broke out. It was considered a great success, even though it was cut short by Germany invading Poland in September of that year. But the hero was relatively unknown until 1988.
The “That’s Life” episodes which feature Winton are shown in this film, but the real programs look quite different to the dramatized version. For one thing, 669 children as discussed in the film, were only numbered 664 in the televised shows. But no matter. The emotional effect is the same.
Did I watch the original shows? I might have: the story is so familiar. And, it seems, we can thank Winton’s mother for raising her son so well. The story is timely, as always, looking at the state of the world right now. Fascism is evident in the Western world. This is our wake up call.
