What Do They Really Promise?

In the past, women were considered chattels. I’m sorry if that offends you, but only 50 years ago could a wife finally take out a loan at the bank without her husband’s permission. It was essentially enslaved labour, and the public pronouncement at a wedding of the groom promising to take care of his bride was a binding contract.
