The First Time I’d Heard These Words in This Lifetime

The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

I read this book when I was just a lad. It went along with watching cowboys and Indians TV shows in my childhood. At the time, I had no idea that I may have been living during those times, first as Étienne Brûlé and then as Pierre-Esprit Radisson. This scene from the film hit me with a ton of bricks.

Why? Because I heard the word, here translated as ‘white man’, and realized it sounds like Yankees. I believe the Huron word for English was Yangees, as spoken in the film clip. Wow, just wow.

Yes, the term Yankees and English is interchangeable here. The Huron chief was speaking in French. Hawkeye is the one using the word Yangees.
