Noises

Eek!

I went to bed sometime last night,

But early this morning I woke with a fright,

For I could hear as plainly as light is day

A mouse, in a corner, begin to say:

“I love to make noises and scurry about,

Such noises as a squawk and a squeak,

To make the menfolk get their guns out,

And, in turn, make the women weak.

“But my day is never done

Until, by gosh, I’ve had some fun,

And most of my fun hits its height

When I make noises throughout the night.”

It’s hard to believe that a mouse would say

Such things as these, but in every way,

It’s very possible for a mouse

To say anything in my house.

(my very first poem, written in 1964 and published in our high school yearbook)

As my poem was written 12 years before the Genesis song “All in a Mouse’s Night”, did it inspire them somehow, or was I just being precognitive?
