I think it’s the most natural of instincts. Anarchy is the enemy of Government. People want to be free, to do whatever they want, whenever they want to do it. Those in control want to maintain the right (‘Maintiens le droit’ is the motto of the RCMP) to govern, by the will of the people. That is why we have general elections every four years.
But in the lead up to an election, everyone’s worst behaviour starts to find expression.

It really doesn’t matter which political party wins, there will be someone, somewhere who will feel hard done by. It’s the nature of the political divide. “The party on the left is now the party on the right.” (paraphrasing The Who)
