John Dee’s Hieroglyph

Monas Hieroglyphica

I don’t remember seeing this image before yesterday (at least not in this lifetime), but what struck me immediately is how rich in astrological lore it is.

The ‘normal’ translation (as stated in Wikipedia) is:

But even to an untrained eye (as in, ‘I spy with my little eye’) Venus and Mercury were being highlighted, too. Since this is Dee’s Monad hieroglyph, I ‘knew’ that all seven of the ‘lights’ and ‘personal’ planets would be involved. And so it proved to be:

In my mind, this ‘glyph’ is an inverted Tree of Life.
