When Tom Hanks Finally Made It…

Big (1988)

These days, we look at Tom Hanks and think, “He’s a superstar.” But once upon a time, he wasn’t. This is the film that made him famous, and he’s never looked back.

It was on TV last night. We got two-thirds of the way through, before our bed called to us. In fact, we stopped watching at the point where Josh begins a ‘grown-up’ relationship with Susan. So, we didn’t have to watch his ‘adult’ life at all, because up to this point he was having a teenage experience in a mature body. We all know what that’s like, before the worries of a ‘real’ job got to us.

Tom Hanks (July 9, 1956)

This timing is considered ‘excellent;’. That makes the T-square very potent: Mars (in Pisces) in opposition to a Virgo Ascendant, both square to the Venus/Midheaven conjunction in Gemini. His need for love and approval is paramount to his wellbeing. If you watch his publicity interviews you can see this dynamic in action. His Sun may be in Cancer, but the stellium of planets in Leo (including the Moon) means that he won’t be satisfied until he’s the best. It makes his appearance in A Man Called Otto all the more significant, since he was playing against type (he was a ‘grump’ in other words).

Big Changed All That (December 23, 1987)

The night of the premiere, another stellium emerged, this time in Capricorn. Notice, too, that the Moon in Aquarius is conjunct the Descendant. There is one inconjunct, linking Mars in Scorpio with Jupiter in Aries. The T-square, this time, has the Moon in opposition to a Leo Ascendant, both square to the Mars/Pluto conjunction. This film was destined to hit the Big time.

The combined charts show a very ‘hot’ opposition to Hank’s natal Venus/Midheaven conjunction.

Obviously, the film hit the right “note” with the public.

Tom Hanks won a Golden Globe for his performance.
