Tariffs
When the United States and Canada (along with Mexico) were negotiating the ‘new’ NAFTA in 2018, I commented that Canada didn’t need the USA as much as they did us. In the end, some agreement is better than none, I guess, but Trump has been trying to make money off international trade and hasn’t been able to make any tariffs stick. The USMCA (known as CUSMA in Canada) was supposed to be renegotiated this year, otherwise it will continue on for another decade, or so I’m led to believe.
The Art of the Deal man in the Oval Office really doesn’t have a clue. He’s up against Canada’s Prime Minister, who is a economist. Trump looks weak, but his inflated sense of self doesn’t allow him to see what’s really going on. To think that he could curtail Canada’s trading partnerships with other countries implies that he really does think of Canada as the 51st state. Foolishness, for sure.
Now there’s a tit-for-tat trade war going on. Who will blink first? You know who…
