When my sister, Anne, and I went back to Windermere, to visit our childhood memories, we made sure we took photographs of the trip. Out of the whole set that I have, three ended up with a red flare in the top left-hand corner. These photographs are digital, so there was no leakage of light onto the film.
Could this have been a sign that either of our parents came along for the ride?

Here’s the third photograph of this sequence of four, showing no red flare.

Here’s the final one, featuring me, with the flare back again.
Maybe my wife, Susan, caught something on camera, or maybe she let the camera cover slip slightly. We’ll never know, for sure.
Or maybe we will: Anne reminded me that Susan was wearing red “Vancouver 2010” Olympic mittens at the time. Mystery solved.
