Carrying the Burden of Humanity on Her Shoulders

Atlas (2024)

This film is not a favourite of critics, but is one of the most watched in Netflix history, at least in its first week of streaming. It has been described as ‘clunky’ ‘far-fetched’ and late 20th century in reviews given, but it doesn’t matter: the world has a thirst for most things AI, and how humanity can overcome ‘evil’ to triumph for the future.

Atlas Shepherd (Lopez), a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.

IMDb

  • Atlas Shepherd: I like both.
  • Smith: Sorry?
  • Atlas Shepherd: When we first met, you asked me if I like pie or cake. I don’t care, I like both. And it’s not that I hate AI, Smith. The truth is… I don’t actually like anybody. People always disappoint. But not you. I like you.

This is the ultimate lone wolf film. No one knows or understands the enemy that she helped create, albeit accidently. Being in sync with Smith helps Atlas overcome the advantages that Harlan has over almost everyone who exists. This is an Herculean task.

“Smith” is pictured as a circle of light, hovering near Atlas. Tron’s companion “Byte” was pictured like this:
