Alice’s Restaurant (November 25, 1965)
Guthrie refers to the incident as a “massacree“, a colloquialism originating in the Ozark Mountains that describes “an event so wildly and improbably and baroquely messed up that the results are almost impossible to believe”. It is a corruption of the word massacre, but carries a much lighter and more sarcastic connotation, rather than describing anything involving actual death.
Have I got your attention? Then, I’ll begin.

I chose 10 am for the timing, because it was on Thanksgiving morning that Alice asked Arlo Guthrie and another individual to take the trash to the local municipal dump. Because it was closed for Thanksgiving (no surprise, there), they found another place to fly tip the garbage, and then thought nothing more about it. The next day, the two men were arrested for littering. The rest is history.
