Spy vs Spy: Tit for Tat

Ex-Spy Poisoned in Salisbury

This seems like a plot straight out of the mind of John le Carré. It was even set in Salisbury, where his last book had a ‘safe house’. Has someone been reading his mail?

Sergei Skripal is small fry when it comes to the others that swim in these shark-infested waters. His double life ended when he was caught by the Russians in 2004. Now fourteen years later, someone wants him dead. Everyone assumes its Putin. But why waste the manpower?

There is a bigger agenda here. And the sanctimony that has surrounded this poisoning is suspicious., at least to me. Sure, UK Prime Minister Theresa May has to look like she’s concerned for the safety of ordinary British citizens that may have come into contact with the nerve agent, but why did it take a week before the Salisbury public was warned to dispose of the clothes they were wearing that day? By then, the damage would have already been done.

Even as I Googled this item, I was being offered “ex-spy Skripal poisoning by MI6”. That may be totally “fake” news inserted by the Russians into the daily newsfeed, or it could be a glimmer of a conspiracy theory. Only time will tell.

In the meantime, Russian spies are being sent home from all over the world, and the Russians are returning the favour. And we seem to be returning to a Cold War era. Didn’t we learn enough the last time?
