Here’s a “New Thought”: Who ‘Influenced’ Mary Baker Eddy?

Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (February 16, 1802 – January 16, 1866)

Okay. Here we go again. I’m beginning to think that this line of thought will never end, but that is the nature of life, isn’t it? Phineas Quimby used mesmerism to affect positive change in the lives of his clients. (Now, where have I heard of that before?)

Barry Morton, a scholar of faith healing, has said that Quimby’s constant practice of his mind cure method led him to make important discoveries related to curing psychosomatic illnesses. Although Quimby did not publish his findings, he trained many others in his methods. In effect, he started a “gnostic” healing tradition. Some of his methods were adopted by John Alexander Dowie, who revolutionized Christian faith healing in the 1880s.

Do you see where I’m going with this?

Several astrology sites cite this birth time, although they rate is as “C”, meaning that they aren’t sure of its accuracy. For our purposes, I will go along with 11:33 pm, mainly because it allows Neptune to rest in his 1st House (of personality). There are two inconjuncts.

Moon Inconjunct Mars

Until you learn to handle your feelings, you are likely to get angry easily, have temper tantrums and be touchy about what is yours and what is not. You may feel you have to defend yourself against imagined threats. The problem here is that you are likely to become too emotionally involved with ideas, opinions or even objects without knowing it until someone threatens them. Then you react as if you were being personally threatened or attacked. You have to realize that it is possible to change your opinions and attitudes without damaging your owrth as a person.

Your relationship with your mother is especially important. If you and she don’t get along in some important way, you will have similar problems with other women when you get older. […] You are likely to be very aggressive and unpleasant when you are emotionally upset.

However, if you have a good relationship with your mother, you will develop self-confidence and the ability to stand up for your rights against any obstacle. You will be courageous, and your strength will inspire others to follow where you lead. You will be independent and able to go your own way, even if others do not choose to follow. But this will happen only if you have healthy emotional experiences as a child.

Uranus Inconjunct Pluto

This aspect indicates changes in the world of the people who were born at this time, changes that were difficult to understand because they were very revolutionary but subtle in many ways.

The fact that Quimby felt that he cured himself of consumption (TB) in his youth is the basis for his decision to help others with their ailments. His introduction to hypnosis happened in his early 30’s, a time when the Neptune energy of his 1st House would have come to fruition in the 7th House (of relationships).

Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, was a patient of Quimby’s for a short time. Later, claims were made that she was at least partially inspired by Quimby in her theology. However, both Quimby’s son and Christian Scientists have pointed out major differences between Quimbyism and Christian Science. Biographer Gillian Gill and others agreed, pointing out that because of its theism, Christian Science differs considerably from the teachings of Quimby, who did not base his work in religion.
