She was the Moon to Bob Dylan’s Sun

Joan Baez (January 9, 1941)

I watched the first half of her documentary, “I Am a Noise” yesterday. It was the phrase she used in discussing her relationship with Dylan that made my astrological ears perk up. She said that meeting him brought out the mothering side of her nature. Huh!?

So, first we have to look at her birth chart, and, not surprising there are two inconjuncts (from the Moon and Pluto) forming a Yod pointing at the Midheaven. There is a secondary inconjunct linking Venus and Uranus. The North Node conjunct the Descendant, with the South Node conjunct the Ascendant suggests that this isn’t her first rodeo. Neptune is also in opposition to the Aries Ascendant, which implies that she was a reluctant performer, preferring to be a dancer rather than a singer.

Then she met Dylan.

Because they were born only four-and-a-half months apart, their slower outer planets are going to be very close. The (not so) surprising aspect was the conjunction of his Sun to her Moon @ 3° Gemini.

Sun/Moon

This is the classic compatibility combination, with the masculine and positive Sun joined to his natural mate, the feminine, receptive and passive Moon. The forces represented by the luminaries complement each other, just as Night complements Day.

In the marriage relationship the man’s Sun can bring significance and illumination to the woman’s Moon, encouraging her to take pleasure in playing the role of wife, while the woman’s Moon can magnetically draw out the solar qualities that fit her partner to play the husband’s role.
