Too Many Years (lyrics)

Family Reunion

Too Many Years

I’m waiting at the station for the Sudbury bus

To see my real dad, years ago:

He answered my letter to meet this one time

And there’s so much I need to know.

But he hung up the phone before I could ask,

And now we will meet in this place:

He’s been dead to me for all this time,

I can hardly picture his face.

Will I recognize him, will he remember me?

Or will we be strangers this day?

Is it too many years, or too many fears?

I wish he had not gone away.

Years later, I’m flying to visit my long lost son,

He’s just had a boy of his own:

He answered my letter to meet this one time

There’s so much he needs to know.

Can he forgive my absence for all these years?

Will we even know what we should be?

Can anyone be sure that this hurt can be healed?

I’ve done to him what’s been done to me.

Will I recognize him, will he remember me?

Or will we be strangers this day?

Is it too many years, or too many fears?

And I wish I had not gone away.

There’s got to be more to this than naming,

More than moments stolen in time;

Somewhere there’s no need for this explaining,

Where I can be myself, a place that’s really mine.

I’d been trying for years to find them

With hours of research, online,

There’s only one thread which brought me in touch

With cousins I hoped would be mine.

I met him in London for the first time

And he set up this visit for me:

To meet my father’s family all at once

And for them the prodigal to meet.

Will I recognize them, do they know about me?

Or will we be strangers this day?

It was too many years, or too many fears:

This time I won’t go away.

Hedgey

I have an ear for imitation, even when I cannot accurately reproduce the effect. This is when poetry comes to my aid,  as the reader can hear what I intend, in their own head. That way I can ‘edge my bets that the message will be transmitted intact.

hedgehog

Hedgey

Hev’rytime I think I’ve got it worked out

An ‘eavy bomb blows it to smithereens:

Perhaps I’m not meant to lose hev’ry doubt;

Perhaps I’ve not the ‘eart, the soul, the means.

You would know best that heach time I try to

Better our lot in life, I seem to ‘urt

Both you and the girls: hearth moves your lives through

Indigo ‘eavens, ground down into dirt.

Recent hevents ‘ave shown just ‘ow I’m liked:

Too bad I’m a mess; ‘ell knows no fury —

Heven for one who pricks like an ‘edgey.

Despite best intentions, I’ve been out-psyched

And distracted by ‘eavies and worry:

You might heven say I’m a bit hedgey…

Forty-Love

forty love

Forty-Love

Almost too quickly, it’s come time to choose:

Have you been courting a twin score of years

A match being watched from seats in the tiers?

Panic sets in: there’s no time to lose.

Perhaps what’s been said will all come as news:

Yet any attempts to play your set fears

Belie the fact that behind those sweat tears

Irrational feelings tighten the screws.

Relax, relax, there’s no need to hurry!

Time will be altered to fit it all in:

Here is the chance to let go of worry;

Don’t rush so much, you’re still going to win.

Ask, to be given; seek, All you will find;

Yes is the answer – Love really is kind…

Footprints

footprints in the snow

Footprints

Somewhere in the middle of the snowstorm,

Night fell and trapped me inside its darkness:

Out in the cold, I walked, wishing for warm

Wooly blankets, and wanting to feel less

Foolish for being caught in the open.

Oh, sometimes, I would like a car to keep

Out of the weather like the other men

That make it home in time to fall asleep.

Perhaps I’m paying penance for some crime

Reaped in the past: I can’t imagine what

It could have been. For more than half the time,

Nothing seems to go right; so, then, I shut

The door behind, only to find that no

Signs show more than my footprints in the snow.

Seasoning

My Watercolour Landscape

Signs of Winter

A scattering of leaves on snow-shrouded grass,

A print of soft lines etched by the wind,

A whistling whisper signed through the trees

Tell that white winter has come to pass.

Spring Morning

Mauve splashes, smudged across the sky,

Have a purple tint and a pale hint

That the sun is getting high;

The rolling hills, like slopes of gentle thighs,

Are touched with silk and snow, like milk,

And after the soft grade comes a slow rise;

Old wooden posts, aged by the years,

Like men, attend as to defend

Their land from all their fears

Which they still in the clear, early hours of spring.

My Summer Daze

The sun, sprinkling about me in little drops of light,

Sifts through the boughs of the tree

Above me.

The wind runs its fingers through my hair

And softly touches the side of my face

With lace.

The grass, showered by the dew rain of the morn,

Cools and refreshes me as I lay in so deep

A sleep.

Death in Autumn

The leaf, once a warm budding sprout, is now cold:

He is brittle and coloured for he is old;

He knows his life is finished as he closes his eyes,

Drifts into that endless sleep, and dies.

Rainy Day

rainy day

Rainy Day

The sleepy sky has not yet wak’ed:

The street is darkly melancholic;

A drizzle paints a misty haze,

And dampens any frolic.

The silence of the gloomy street,

By feet splashing a steady beat

Is broken…

Rain, rain,

Go away:

Why did you have to come today?

A pitcher of rain pours down,

Around the sopping ground;

The foggy air has found

A sound which can’t abound

Ev’rywhere.

It’s raining,

It’s pouring:

My old man is snoring!

The pattern of the rain on tin:

A din o’er which sound

Can’t win…

The dreary sky is still asleep,

But now it’s dusky twilight;

The rain still sheds a drowsy tear,

And the hazy street has lost its sight.

Lonesome (a Terza Rima)

lonesome

The literal translation of terza rima from Italian is ‘third rhyme’. Terza rima is a three-line stanza using chain rhyme in the pattern A-B-A, B-C-B, C-D-C, D-E-D. There is no limit to the number of lines, but poems or sections of poems written in terza rima end with either a single line or couplet repeating the rhyme of the middle line of the final tercet. The two possible endings for the example above are d-e-d, e or d-e-d, e-e. There is no set rhythm for terza rima, but in English, iambic pentameter is generally preferred.

To me, the challenge was to make a story out of the poetry, without sacrificing the rhyme scheme. Did I succeed?

Lonesome

It’s overwhelming how lonesome one feels

When left alone for any length of time;

More so without the benefit of wheels.

.

Some friends are distant, or seem so when I’m

Lonely, in the mood for company; talk

Is hard by long distance, without a dime.

.

Time can be passed, by going for a walk,

But crowds have a way of creating fear

That one may not survive being a rock.

.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy being clear,

But more that I want to become less free

And lean on someone I’d like to be near.

.

If only one could accurately see

How others feel about being alive,

There would be less need of “I” and/or “me”.

.

It is to this point that I now arrive:

Be gentle, more loving; for this I strive.

Separate Movements (a Villanelle)

tai chi

A villanelle (also known as villanesque) is a nineteen-line poetic form consisting of five tercets followed by a quatrain. There are two refrains and two repeating rhymes, with the first and third line of the first tercet repeated alternately until the last stanza, which includes both repeated lines. The villanelle is an example of a fixed verse form. The word derives from Latin, then Italian, and is related to the initial subject of the form being the pastoral.

When I wrote the following poem, I took the villanelle structural rules but then turned the subject matter on its head. You judge whether my attempt was successful or not.

Separate Movements

.

As the mind moves the body it’s moved by the soul

Toward its destiny at the end of life,

For each knows an instinctively separate role.

.

Ev’ryone’s existence is sometimes somewhat droll;

No one else is to blame if there’s any strife:

As the mind moves the body it’s moved by the soul.

.

At the beginning of time Man started with no goal

Until he was united with a warm wife,

For each knows an instinctively separate role.

.

He, who thinks he can hide, puts his head in a hole,

Like Macbeth, confronted by the Earl of Fife:

As the mind moves the body it’s moved by the soul.

.

Imagine going through life as blind as a mole

Until some woman cuts it short with a knife,

For each knows an instinctively separate role.

.

The proverbial, isolated ten-foot Pole

Is kept at a distance from the rest of life:

As the mind moves the body it’s moved by the soul,

For each knows an instinctively separate role.

Summertime

summer laze

When I was a hypnotherapist, I realized that some of my earlier poetry was very much like casting a spell over the reader. Words can paint pictures in the mind, and words about warm summer days are the most effective for creating a trance-like state. The following poems are examples of that:

A Brush with Summer

The air, like a broom of soft warm hair,

Moves very slowly over the grassy hills,

Sweeping away all ambitious wills,

Leaving minds there, free from care.

My Summer Daze

The Sun,

Sprinkling about me in little drops of light,

Sifts through the boughs of the tree

Above me.

The Wind,

Runs its fingers through my hair

And softly touches the side of my face

With lace.

The Grass,

Showered by the dew-rain of the morn,

Cools and refreshes me, as I lay in so deep

A sleep.
