Enemy of the People?
Trump has declared war on the mainstream media (MSM) by calling them the enemy of the people. What he really means is that they seem to have made him their enemy and this is his way of hitting back at them.
The mainstream media are the Fourth Estate. The other three are the Clergy, the Nobility and the Common Man.
It would appear that the task of the mainstream media is to call out any abuse of power by the Clergy or the Nobility on behalf of the Common Man. Therefore, by definition, the MSM cannot be the enemy of the people.
A New Champion
Somewhere along the way, the MSM have become somewhat complicit with the Government, at least on the surface. In the last 75 years or so, newspaper editors were willing to look the other way if asked to ignore some picadillo on the part of politicians. But the price was co-operation between the ones in power and those editors/owners. This cozy arrangement was maintained until Trump came to power: then the ‘dogs of war’ were released on them. Why? Because they didn’t sing his praises.
Now, two years down the road, we ae witnessing a fully divided country that doesn’t even pretend to be ‘united under God’. A new Civil War has been declared.
Counterculture on Social Media
So how can we keep a sensible balance in the world? By finding the middle way between the Left and the Right. That’s where we bloggers have a duty to speak up when we see inaccuracies, exaggerations and blatant lies (as in ‘lies, damned lies and statistics’).
It’s not a easy place to be. If you call out liberals, you’re a right-wing reactionary; if you call out conservatives, you’re a left-wing revolutionary. You can’t win for losing.
But the ‘job’ seems to be God-given: if you are aware, and you can share your insights, then it is foolish to ‘hide your lamp under a bushel’.
Most people don’t read my posts. I know that. I could probably say the most outrageous things and no one would bat an eyelid. But to not write is not an option. I feel the impulse too strongly to ignore it.
And, maybe, just maybe, one day people will discover that what I wrote actually made sense. That what I wrote was my Truth. That’s really all I can hope.
