No: Gotta Eat, Gotta Sleep

We saw this movie yesterday. I wasn’t sure what to expect, having not read or seen any advance publicity. So, I think it was a bit disappointing to have it focus on the London “Talk of the Town” shows near the end of Judy Garland’s life in 1969.

We all have our cherished memories of Judy’s life in films, and I’m sure that no one has forgotten The Wizard of Oz, so to have a few flashbacks to that time with Louis B Mayer and before, with her working relationship with Mickey Rooney, didn’t hurt this movie. However, in showing the beginnings alongside the ending, the contrast was startling.

Renée Zellweger will no doubt win an Oscar for her portrayal of this gay icon. But I wish they’d put some flesh on those bones. Judy was a lot heavier toward the end of her life. It would have made her character more ‘real’ to me.
