logophilia
Addiction to words. Belief that all words contain hidden meanings, provided that you have the time and patience to look up their constituent parts in enough different languages (however unrelated); or that given sounds and letters have a constant meaning across all languages; or that words can be reduced to numbers and so be decoded in that way (see gematria, numerology).
Anything, in short, rather than discover the hidden meaning of yourself.

materialism
Belief that matter is literally all that matters; modern version of the ancient cult of the Earth Mother ( = “mater”); form of superstition based on a failure to recognize that seeing is believing. Now going out of fashion, not merely among New Agers, but even among some scientists.
Perhaps that is why, to preserve the balance of the universe (see duality, holism), materialism of the crassest kind is currently growing in favor in the world of politics.
