Meet the Prototype of Zorro: Guido Fawkes (Fox)

Guy Fawkes (April 13, 1570 – January 31, 1606)

I doubt if we would have remembered his legend if he was only known for his alias, John Johnson. Doesn’t have quite the same ring, does it?

In 1604 Fawkes became involved with a small group of English Catholics, led by Robert Catesby, who planned to assassinate the Protestant King James and replace him with his daughter, third in the line of succession, Princess Elizabeth. Fawkes was described by the Jesuit priest and former school friend Oswald Tesimond as “pleasant of approach and cheerful of manner, opposed to quarrels and strife … loyal to his friends”. Tesimond also claimed Fawkes was “a man highly skilled in matters of war”, and that it was this mixture of piety and professionalism that endeared him to his fellow conspirators. The author Antonia Fraser describes Fawkes as “a tall, powerfully built man, with thick reddish-brown hair, a flowing moustache in the tradition of the time, and a bushy reddish-brown beard”, and that he was “a man of action … capable of intelligent argument as well as physical endurance, somewhat to the surprise of his enemies.”

The timing of his birth is randomized, and yet the resulting configuration of his planetary aspects is quite revealing: like the image of a nuclear atom, this is the chart of a revolutionary. And, as luck would have it, Pluto is positioned at about age 8, when his father died, and he converted to the Catholic faith. So this is ‘accidentally’ correct.

Neptune in Gemini is approximately the right position for exposure of his part in the Gunpowder Plot and his subsequent death (by accident from the scaffold or suicide).

There are two inconjuncts, one dependent on the correct birth time, the other not.

Your relationship with your mother may be rather unstable. She may be very involved in her own interests, which prevent her from being as close to you as she would be otherwise. She may be an unconventional person, a real free spirit. The problem is that your feelings about her are mixed, both loving and unloving. You may secretly resent her. Probably you don’t feel that you can express this consciously, but it could come out when you are angry or upset. Certainly this will result in not wanting to form close relationships with other people, especially women. And the people you do choose as close friends are likely to be exciting and different from anyone you have known in the past. However, they may also be rather upsetting.

You often feel that you haven’t any right to ask much of those whom you love. You feel that you must do favors for them instead of asking for their help. For you, love is an act of service, not self-gratification. Also, through relationships with others, you try to learn more about your own and other people’s inner workings. For this reason your relationships are more deep and profound than most people’s. But they are somewhat difficult, too. Your close friends and loved ones discover that you are quite different in a close relationship than you appear at first. It is not that you are dishonest, but that you show a side of yourself to your friends that you usually keep hidden, often because you are not entirely confident in that role. You may feel unsure that others will like you or accept your affection. This is one reason why you express your love by doing nice things for people. You are trying to win them over.

Do you think Fawkes rued the day he signed up for the “Gunpowder Plot”? I do: he may have realized that he had been duped into a conspiracy that would turn out badly for other Roman Catholics in England. Some even suggest that the plot was an early version of 9-11 or a late repeat of Nero’s burning of Rome. So, the question is: who snitched?
