How I Chose the Winner of the 2007 Grand National

Image

Betting on a horse race is never a ‘sure thing’. For 20 years, I tried and failed at picking a horse to win the Grand National at Aintree in the UK. Then one year, I did something a little bit different.

Down to my last fiver…

I’d just moved out of a home I’d shared with a former partner. After buying a Saturday Daily Mail, I was down to my last £5. It was going to be two weeks before my next pay day.

Reading the Daily Mail, I saw that it was the annual running of the Grand National steeplechase race at Aintree.

And now for something completely different…

I had tried to bet on this race (along with everyone else) every year, but never with any success. It occurred to me that at some level of consciousness, the results of this race were already known, so I decided to see if I could tap into that knowledge. By pointing the index finger of my right hand, but without reading the names of the horses, I scanned down the two-page listing of the entrants, waiting for something/anything to happen.

http://www.sandracer.com/2007_04_08_archive.html There were forty horses running that day.

I scanned down the first page, nothing. Three quarters down the second page, my finger felt a very quiet ‘ping’. I noted where and kept on. Scanning the rest of the page, nothing else happened, so I scanned down the pages again, and got the same ‘ping’. I looked at the horse’s name and it was “Silver Birch“. ‘Not bad for a Canadian living in England,’ I thought to myself, and headed out to the local bookies.

A result!

I put that last fiver on “Silver Birch” to win (not both ways, my usual bet) at 33-1 and then went back home to await the results. Turned out that “Silver Birch” won! I came away with £170, enough to get me through the next two weeks.

(I have never been able to duplicate the results.)

Strange Coincidence?

On the 31st of October 1987, I was sitting for a psychic portrait by Coral Polge, in the UK. A man, looking like a banker, sat (on the Other Side) for her. I didn’t recognize him at the time, but when I saw this picture in 2007, I realized it was my father, replicating this photo (taken by his brother, Fred). I no longer am in possession of the portrait, but I can assure you that the resemblance was striking.

Coincidentally, the date matches the date of my father’s funeral service at St. Andrews United Church in Sudbury, ON, Canada.

Image

(P.S. Oops! My diary note,  written in a 1987 calendar book, states that the Coral Polge sitting took place on the 24th, four days before my father died. As he had been admitted to hospital then, he must have been slipping in and out of consciousness.)

Therapy

Image

Events in my earlier years showed me that I had a need to help others in their time of need. This led, first, to my becoming an Astrologer and, later, a Hypnotherapist. Two poems demonstrate my earlier frustrations.

Tel-Apathy

Time lost, spent waiting for the phone to ring,

With hope, yet dreading what the call might bring.

Does anyone want me for what I am?

For what I am able to do for them?

A chance is all I ask to prove my worth,

To show that I was predestined from birth

To comfort, love with all my soul and heart,

A woman who is sad, forlorn, apart.

But still I wait and still the phone won’t ring,

And then I start to curse the blessed thing.

It smugly sits and smiles from one to nine,

While holding back the message on its line.

Then, all at once, a new thought comes to be:

Could she be waiting for a call from me?

The Candle

The light faltered, flickered in the glass bowl;

Shadows danced on the wall of the dark room,

Which seemed eerie and cold like a tomb,

Full of dark despair and devoid of soul.

The weight of life has had a heavy toll,

Removing joy and leaving only gloom;

An overwhelming sense of death and doom

Pervades the being of a person, whole.

A candle burning bravely, but in vain,

Trying to dispel the melancholic,

I might as well have tried to conquer rain,

Or form straight lines from the parabolic,

Than to attempt to influence your life

By giving love in place of mortal strife.

Original Sin?

Image

There’s been a debate going on for millennia about Original Sin (ancestral sin) versus Spiritual Birth (sin-free beginnings). I cannot do justice to this discussion, but for a little light humour, I wrote the following poem.

Genesis

When God began to form the World, alone,

There was no one with whom He could converse;

So He created Man, and, from his bone,

A woman’s hand, for better or for worse.

So Eve and Adam led a perfect life,

Communing with nature, the birds and bees;

They had no fears, no doubts, no pain, no strife,

Cause God gave them wills to do as they please.

But then, one day, the Tempter slithered in,

Before they’d served their lengthy earthly term,

And he made them commit their deadly sin

Of sharing apples with an Evil Worm.

So, if a Sin you must initiate,

Before beginning, think about your Fate.

Heavenly Maiden

In the first year after I moved to England, I met my very first business partner. She was an Aquarian like me, and her approach to Astrology was more focussed on the spiritual side. Along the way, we got close emotionally, which only seemed to highlight the need for spiritual growth on my side. She introduced me to a psychic development circle, and I soon learned to direct energy in group work. I will forever be indebted to this wonderful woman. The following poems are my homage to her.

Made In Heaven

Here we are again at the ol’ crossroads:
Each direction we take, the way seems blocked;
And we can’t keep the bonds that time erodes.
Variety, in itself, can’t be knocked,
Even though we’re aware of what’s at stake.
Nowadays, we can’t afford to waste time
Lingering in the past: that one mistake —
You know the one: must I commit it to rhyme? —
Makes me hesitate…So, what have I learned?
Ask me in six months’ time and I’ll tell you!
I’m not as dumb as I act — yes, I’ve earned
Demerit points, but I’ve found what is true:
Either one is a ‘six’ or a ‘seven’;
Neither matters when we’re “Made In Heaven”.

Wayland’s Smithy

The psychic development group met once a week at Sylvia’s house. It sure changed how I approached spirituality. One Saturday, Kate, Sylvia and I drove up to Wayland’s Smithy in Oxfordshire. Here are my impressions:

Wayland’s Smithy

Three of us went on a spiritual quest:
One of us was naïve and unaware
Until we stood on the burial rest,
Circled and spiralling into the air.
Here was a place of initiation,
Somewhere I’d never been in this short life:
Touching the cool stones gave a sensation
Of peaceful calm and release from all strife.
Nothing can match the magical feeling
Evoked by the Silver Birches which stood
Channelling the energy; a reeling
Overtook me, as I caressed their wood.
Only now, does this knowledge, outpouring,
Link with this age, Aquarius, soaring.

The Journey

Because of my connection with Kate, I felt like I was on a roller-coaster ride. In the end, I realized that it was meant to be understood as getting ‘somewhere’: we were on a journey together.

The Journey

Not for one moment, could I have surmised
Out of the blue, what you were to reveal:
To say the least, I was greatly surprised;
Did you consider how badly I’d feel?
Each time we reach a new understanding,
Something comes up which scatters our knowledge:
Too bad we suffered such a rough landing;
It felt like we’d been thrown out of college.
Now is the time to learn this hard lesson,
As only two blind folk know how to see:
Try to be true to your heart and lessen
Intense situations; just try to BE.
Our access to the Soul’s Education:
Note well the Journey, not Destination.

A Gift Not Given

Eventually, we called a halt to the emotional side of our relationship, which meant that I wasn’t really sure how to relate to Kate. Hence, this poem. My intention was to get her to understand how powerful the attraction was (her Mars was exactly conjunct my Venus – in Aquarius).

A Gift Not Given

Now that we’ve got IT out of our system,
Events should settle down to a routine;
Explaining why we had to Masc. and Fem.
Doesn’t get to reasons behind-the-scene,
So let’s go back to basics, to the Stars:
Never underestimate the power
Of attraction between Venus and Mars,
Regardless of the Sign, the House, the Hour;
Even though THIS Conjunction was reversed,
Cupid drew His arrow and pierced my soul…
Erotic fantasies became rehearsed:
In my story of Love, you played THE role
Proposed to guide me to my better Self;
Too bad THAT book must be left on the shelf!

White Light

I finally got the picture: we were to relate at the highest possible level and that made it all right in the end.

White Light

We are one in the Spirit: our Mind
Has but to see the Light and we’ll become
Inspired with Love and filled with Truth; the sum
Total of our purpose, in life, we’ll find,
Even the vicious Fool can learn to be kind:
Let loose from sensuality’s wet gum
One can stop to think, and not act so dumb;
Verily, we’re the Hanged Man in a bind.
Each time we do what we know to be wrong,
The Conscience becomes conscious of our ways:
Regardless of how we think we began,
Understanding comes through before too long,
Telling us that Ignorance never pays;
Helping us to live in the Cosmic Plan.

Bread and Wine

Image

Some titles seem to lend themselves to repetition. Such was the case for Bread and Wine. In the first poem, I was trying to encapsulate ideas I gained from Madame Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine. In the second one, I was recognizing how sexual intercourse is love’s communion. Two different approaches, completely.

Bread and Wine

Behind the symbol of the Lord’s Last Meal,

As opposed to transubstantiation,

Clings the meaning of assimilation,

Calling the eater to hear, see and feel.

Helping the candidate break through the seal,

Using tokens of initiation,

Spirit, born again in revelation,

Eats the bread and drinks the wine for the real

Truth of the matter: Father, husbandman;

Christ, the vine; disciples, the limbs of grape.

Ev’ry part fed by the wisdom that ran

Rich through its vein; please, Father, trim and shape

Each branch so that the best harvest of man

Sends a fine vintage to the final drape.

Sonnet IV

Bread and Wine

Love is the altar where one worships Life’s

Oneness with the Universal Being:

Victory over the Flesh, and its strifes,

Evokes a simplicity of seeing

Something which can elude the shallow mind,

Clouded by dense sexual vibration.

Omniscience is there! It’s just hard to find…

Mainly because one’s lost in sensation.

Material living’s dying inside:

Ultimate liberty comes to us all

No matter how coarse, there’s nowhere to hide;

Inevitably, we’ll answer its call.

Observe your communion of Bread and Wine,

Never by casting your pearls before swine.

The Enneagram

Image

It’s an interesting image, the Enneagram. The hidden message is the solution to π: 3.142857. I have tried to encode the following poem with the same message.

Enneagram

The symbol of esoteric knowledge

Reminds me of a halo ‘round the sun:

Inscribed as a circle, while on its edge,

A triangle and a bent hexagon.

Nine points mark the progress of time,

Gauging our actions and helping us plan

Linear activities: a sublime

Enneagram could be the Face of Man.

One way to approach it is to ask it

For a solution as simple as pie

To a problem, like from which basket

Ate the Knave of Hearts — it will never lie:

Five times out of ten, you’ll get the answer

Seven. Divide that up, if you can, sir!

Flight of a Canada Goose

Image

The book Jonathan Livingston Seagull made such an impression on me when I read it. I could identify with the main character, so I thought maybe I should write something that echoed my Canadian identity. (I hope Bob and Doug McKenzie will forgive my borrowing their catchphrase.)

Flight of a Canada Goose

“Take off, eh!”

Those famous words set the mind of Canaday to thinking…

Maybe it was time to look at the world from a different perspective;

Maybe it was time to see things for himself instead of taking other people’s word for what was important;

Maybe it was time…

All his life, Canaday had known within himself

That he was special,

But everyone tried to make him feel like the Ugly Duckling.

He just didn’t fit in anywhere:

He couldn’t relax around the others because he was aware of the differences which separated them;

It wasn’t that he was better than them – he just didn’t think the way they did.

One day, he sat looking at the rest quarreling amongst themselves about the most trivial of matters:

Who was going to be first in the breadcrumb line?

What does it matter? he thought.

There is plenty of food in the Park with the Stanley statue standing at its entrance,

There are plenty pf opportunities to eat the scraps that those silly bipeds left lying around.

What is the big deal about what the pecking order is?

Casting his eyes skyward, Canaday caught sight of the Eagle:

That’s the way to be, soaring high above all this pettiness.

I want to fly away, and be done with mundane matters.

So he took off…

Someone Special: Rosalind Keene

Image

Every once in a while, I hear a singer, who actually brings out some emotion in me. This was the case when I first heard Rosalind Keene in the summer of 1975, at a Holiday Inn in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, BC. I wrote and then had this poem passed to her during the intermission and she came to my table to thank me for it. She asked if she could publish it one day. Of course, I said yes.

Someone Special                    (to Rosalind Keene)

I realize our worlds are far apart,

But something special happens when you sing:

My mind forgets all worries others bring,

When feelings, warm, start flowing from your heart.

Impressions, overwhelming from the start,

Said you’ve no interest in anything

But living well, while others only cling

To cold ideas, unlike music, art.

But now I must get down to words more clear,

Which might inspire a feeling, more secure

For both of us, to set us both at ease:

I find you vibrant, distant, yet sincere,

But, how to bridge the gap, I am unsure;

So I will stay aloof, like land from seas.

In 1979, Rosalind joined the trio Touché.

Lessons for This Day (and Age)

From Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount Image

Blissful are the Humble, in spirit,

For they are the Force of Heaven.

Blissful are the Mourners,

For they will be cheered.

Blissful are the Patient,

For they will succeed on Earth.

Blissful are the Perfectionists,

For they will be complete.

Blissful are the Compassionate,

For they will be shown compassion.

Blissful are the emotionally Pure,

For they will see God.

Blissful are the Reconcilers,

For they will be adopted by God.

Blissful are the Defenders of Perfection,

For they too are the Force of Heaven.

Blissful are you when others insult you, slander you and rudely gossip about you because of me. Be happy, for you will be justly compensated in the spiritual realms, since they’ve done the same thing to other sensitives before you.

You are the earth’s preservers. But if the preserve becomes mouldy, how can it be preserved again? It is good for nothing, except to be thrown in the dustbin.

You are the world’s spiritual channellers. Those set in high positions cannot hide, and no one creates energy to bury it in the ground, but shares it so that everyone can benefit. Therefore share your spiritual energy with others so that they may understand that God is working through you beneficially.

Don’t think that I’ve come to erase the Karmic Law and the Prophet’s written words: I’ve come, not to remove them, but to prove them right. I’m telling you the truth: until the Universe disappears, nothing, but nothing, will disappear from the Law until everything is worked out.

Anyone who breaks the most minor of these instructions, and causes others to do the same, will be considered the most minor in the spiritual realms; but anyone who follows these instructions and causes others to do the same will be considered great in the spiritual reams. For I’m telling you that, unless you live more perfectly than the preachers and teachers, you will definitely not share the spiritual power.

You know the old saying, “Don’t kill, for anyone who kills will be tried by a Judge.” But I’m telling you that anyone who is unreasonably angry with a neighbour, will be tried by a Judge, and anyone who judges his neighbour a “bastard” will be tried by the Council, and anyone who judges him an “idiot” will be tried by the tortures of Hellfire. So, if you are giving your money to charity and you remember that your neighbour has a complaint against you, leave your money in your pocket, go and make amends first, and then make your gift.

Quickly satisfy your opponent on the way to Court, or he may hand you over to the Judge, and the Judge to the Guard, and you could be imprisoned. I’m telling you the truth: you’ll never be free again until you’ve righted every wrong.

You’ve heard the saying, “Do not be sexually perverted.” But I’m telling you that any man who fantasises about a woman has already become emotionally corrupt.

So if your right eye prevents your progress, pluck it out and throw it away. It’s more to your profit to throw away one of your body parts than to have the whole body thrown away. And if your right hand prevents your progress, cut it off and throw it away. It’s more to your gain to lose one of your limbs than to have the whole body get lost.

And the saying, “Any man who sends his wife away must grant her a legal divorce.” But I’m telling you that every man who sends his wife away, except for an extra-marital affair, makes her sexually immoral, and any man who marries a divorced woman is also sexually decadent.

Again you know that old saying, “Do not go back on your word, but give back to the Lord your bond.” But I’m telling you not to legally obligate yourself, at all, by calling the Stars to witness, because they form God’s Seat of Power, nor the Earth, because it’s His Footstool, nor Jerusalem, because it’s the City of the Great King, nor your own head, because you haven’t the authority to make your white hairs black again. Let your “yes” be yes, and your “no,” no. Anything more is egotistical.

You know the saying, “An eye to replace an eye, and a tooth to replace a tooth.” But I’m telling you, don’t fight selfishness: if someone slaps your right cheek, offer him the other cheek, too; and if someone takes you to court for the shirt off your back, give him your coat as well; and if someone makes you accompany him for one mile, go two miles with him. Give to anyone who asks of you, and lend to anyone who wants to borrow from you.

You know the saying, “Love your friends and hate your enemies.” But I’m telling you: Love your enemies and forgive your persecutors, that you may be worthy of the right to be children of the heavenly Father, who makes the sun shine on the selfish and the good, and showers rain on the just and the unjust. If you love those who love you, so what? Even the Collector of Taxes does that. And if you greet only your relatives, what’s so special about that? Even Pygmies do that.

Emulate the Perfection of your Heavenly Father.

Be careful not to do your “good deeds” in public to gain publicity, otherwise you won’t gain your Father’s favour in the spiritual realms. So, when you are donating to a charity, don’t sing your own praises like hypocrites to attract attention. I’m telling you: that will be all they get from it. When you give to the needy, keep it secret, even from yourself, and your Father, who sees the secrets, will repay you. And when you pray, don’t act like hypocrites, who love to be seen praying in public. I’m telling you the truth, that’s all they get from it. When you pray, find a private place, shut the door and pray to your Father, in secret. Then your Father, who sees the secrets, will compensate you.

When praying, do not use empty words recited by rote, like the uninitiated, who think that mere repetition will make them heard: don’t be like them, for your Father knows your needs before you even ask him.

Pray like this:

“Our Father, in the spiritual realms,

May your Name remain sacred,

May your Power come

And your Will be done,

As above, so below.

Take care of our everyday needs

And forgive our mistakes,

As we forgave other’s mistakes.

And don’t put us to the test,

But rescue us from Egotism.”

If you forgive others their flaws, your heavenly Father will forgive you, too. But if you don’t forgive others, neither shall your Father forgive your flaws.

And when you fast, don’t be gloomy like hypocrites, for they make horrible faces to let others know they are fasting. I’m telling you the truth: they get what they deserve. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face so that it isn’t obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, in secret, and your Father, who sees the secrets, will compensate you.

Do not put your store in earthly possessions, which can be destroyed by moth and rust, and stolen by thieving raiders, but put your store in heavenly Treasure, which cannot become moth-eaten or rusty, nor stolen by raiding thieves, because where your treasure is, your soul will be there also.

The eye is the light sensor of the body: if your eyes are focussed, your whole being will be rightly directed, but if your eyes are crooked, your whole being will be bewildered. If, then, your inner direction is confused, how confusing is that confusion.

No one can obey two bosses, for either he will hate one and love the other, or he will pay attention to one and ignore the other. You cannot serve both the Spirit and the body.

Therefore, I’m saying to you: don’t be anxious for your life: what you should eat, what you should drink; nor for your body, what you should wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the sky birds: they don’t plant, harvest or store in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not more deserving than them? Who of you, by fretting, can increase his height by one inch? And why worry about clothes? Think about how the wildflowers grow: they don’t work or sew, yet I’m telling you that even Solomon in all his majesty was not graced like one of these. If that’s how God clothes the wild grass, which is here today and burned tomorrow, why not you much more, Worry Warts? Therefore, don’t worry, saying, “What should we eat?” or “What should we drink?” or “What should we wear?” The uninitiated desire all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But first desire His Power and His Perfection and all these things will be included. Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself. Each day has enough in it to endure.

Do not condemn, as a way to avert being condemned, because you will be condemned with the condemnation with which you condemn, and you will be compared with the comparison with which you compare.

Why do you look for the speck of dust in your neighbour’s eyes, but cannot see the plank of wood in your own eye? How can you say to your neighbour, “Let me flick the speck out of your eye,” while you have a log in yours? Hypocrite, first draw out the wood blocking your sight and then you’ll see clearly to flick the speck out of your neighbour’s eye.

Do not reveal Secret Truth to the ordinary public, and do not give Spiritual Gems to the Great Unwashed, or else they may abuse the Knowledge and turn it back against you, destroying your life.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For, every asker receives, and the seeker finds, and to the knocker, the door will be opened. Which of you, when your child asks for bread, gives him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, gives him a snake? If you, being selfish, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask Him? Therefore, in everything you do, treat everyone as you want them to treat you, for this is the essence of the Law of Karma and the Prophet’s written warnings.

Cross the mountain by the narrow pass. Because the opening is wide, and the way leading to destruction broad, many go by this direction. Because the passage is tight and the Way leading to Life is very restrictive, few people find it.

Be aware of Astrologers who seem benign, but are filled with malignancy. By their results, you will recognise them. Do grapes come from thorn trees, or figs from thistles? In the same way, every good tree bears beneficial produce, but a corrupt tree shows only harmful effects. Every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and burned. You will recognise them by their results.

Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will share in the Force, but only those who do my heavenly Father’s Will. Someday, many will say to me, “Lord, Lord: did we not predict in your name, and exorcise demons in your name, and perform many miracles in your name?” And I will clearly announce to them, “I never knew you. Get away from me, you profiteers.”

Therefore, everyone who hears my words and acts on them is like a sensible man who built his house on a foundation of rock. The rain came down, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it didn’t fall. But everyone who hears my words and doesn’t act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on a foundation of shifting sand. The rain came down, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and LOUD was its crash.
