I Saw an Angel, Of That I’m Sure

You’re Beautiful (2004)

My life is brilliant
My love is pure
I saw an angel
Of that I’m sure
She smiled at me on the subway
She was with another man
But I won’t lose no sleep on that
‘Cause I’ve got a plan

You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful, it’s true
I saw your face in a crowded place
And I don’t know what to do
‘Cause I’ll never be with you

Yes, she caught my eye
As we walked on by
She could see from my face that I was
[Flying] high
And I don’t think that I’ll see her again
But we shared a moment that will last ’til the end

James Blount / Amanda Ghost / Sasha Scarbeck

It was one of those moments. I had driven to the train station in Reading, and boarded the Intercity train bound for London Paddington in the Easter break of 2005. Coming up from the Underground station at Covent Garden. I saw an Irish actress* I recognized from television. She was with her husband, and yet she smiled at me. (See, I could have written these lyrics…)

Susan and I saw James Blunt in concert in Toronto in early 2008, courtesy of her family.

We shared a moment that will last ’til the end…

[*It probably wasn’t this actress after all, but at the time, she was the closest to her looks.]

She Reached In and Grabbed Right Hold of My Heart

Invisible Touch (1986)

Well I’ve been waiting, waiting here so long
But thinking nothing, nothing could go wrong, ooh now I know
She has a built in ability
To take everything she sees
And now it seems I’m falling, falling for her

She seems to have an invisible touch, yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch, yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart

Well I don’t really know her, I only know her name
But she crawls under your skin
You’re never quite the same, and now I know
She’s got something you just can’t trust
And it’s something mysterious
And now it seems I’m falling, falling for her

She seems to have an invisible touch, yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch, yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart

Anthony George Banks / Phillip David Charles Collins / Michael Rutherford

The lyrics of this song could have been written for any number of women in that time period. I was very confused, and trying to make sense of my life. That’s no excuse, but it is the reason.

A Supernatural Love Story

The Keeping Hours (2017)

Poster courtesy of IMDb.com

On the recommendation of Susan’s daughter, we watched this film on Netflix last night. I suppose I expected a spooky horror story, but this one, apart from a few haunting special effects, turned out to be a tale of spiritual intervention of a child, who had died seven years earlier, for his parents who had since divorced over their guilt of his death. To say, literally, that only a child can reconcile two grieving parents, is an understatement. He just wanted everything to return to the way it was before his death.

Now, as we’re on the subject of life after death, I should like to point out a few ‘fantasy’ elements of this film which don’t ring true: poltergeist (noisy spirit) activity is usually connected to a living being, and is not really a ghost action; a disturbed teenager, for example, can cause electrical circuits to blow because of unresolved anger and frustration issues. In Jacob’s case, his parents arguing about who was to blame for his death might have set him off, but I would suggest that the producers of the film wanted dramatic scenes, so exploding light bulbs would have been expected.

Jacob, if he were truly just haunting his family home, would not have ventured outside, and he definitely would not have gone to the beach in his father’s car. The image of him building sandcastles with his parents seemed a step too far, for me, anyway.

This song played several times throughout the film: it was first played during Jacob’s parents’ first dance at their wedding (the same day Jacob died) and was ‘magically’ played whenever Jacob wanted to remind his parents of what they once had together. (It seemed to me that he could make the song come on the radio/stereo at will.)

The other recurring song was “Frère Jacques”, as sung (in English) by Jacob, himself.

Frère Jacques
Frère Jacques
Dormez-vous
Dormez-vous
Sonnez les matines
Sonnez les matines
Ding, dang, dong
Ding, dang, dong

Writer unknown

I suppose this was Jacob’s way of saying “wake up, people”.

But the subtext of the film is the truth, as far as I am concerned: Love Never Dies.

Double Entendre: Something Deeply Profound

Deep (1988)

Every time I hear the sound of the rain
Beating on my roof again
I want to taste your love
And I want to go deep, deep.
I want to go deep, deep.
I want to go deep.

Every time I lift my eyes to the sky
Something in my heart asks why.
I want to know the truth
And I want to go deep, deep.
I want to go deep.

Like the footprints
Disappearing from the sand,
I try to catch the thought.
It slips right through my hand

And, as the darkness
Throws it’s cloak upon the ground,
I start to run to you.
I’ve got to take you down,
I want to go deep, deep.
I want to go deep, deep.
I want to go deep.

Every time I feel I’m losing my way
The power of your love remains.
I want to touch your love
An’ I want to go deep, deep.
I want to go deep. deep.
I want to go deep, deep.
I want to go deep.

Justin Hayward

The first two lines remind me of a poem I wrote to my future first wife in 1967. But this song represents a time in my life when I was mostly living between two existences: one as a single working man in Ascot during the week; and as a family man on weekends in Torquay.

Suzann and I saw The Moody Blues perform live at the Vancouver Colosseum in the early 80’s.

“He’s Probably Tired of His Own Singing…”

Eyes That See In The Dark (1983)

You’re not meant to be alone
I’ll share your dream
I’ll show you love you’ve never known
Two flames together in the deep of the night

I’m up in your love
Close by you when you call
I’ll take my stand
One chance to make or lost it all

This time my journey to wherever you are
I sail on your river so far
My love we’ll never be found
If you believe

We got eyes that see in the dark
And the power of love lives for making you mine
And in the light of close investigation
Is it only my imagination? I got you

Maurice Ernest Gibb / Barry Alan Gibb

I got sent this album (as a cassette) in late 1984, from a friend. She wanted me to know how she felt. I think I already knew.

I saw Kenny Rogers (and Dolly Parton) perform live at the Vancouver Colosseum in January 1985. It was a memorable night.

And Tell You What I Feel About You

I Just Wanna Stop (1978)

Brother to Brother cover courtesy of Wikipedia

When I think about those nights in Montreal
I get the sweetest thoughts of you and me
Memories of love above the city lights
Oooo, I’ve tried so hard to take it
But alone my heart won’t make it

I just wanna stop
And tell you what I feel about you, babe
I just wanna stop
I never wanna live without you, babe
I just gotta stop
For your love…
Oooo.

Vannelli, Ross

You’re probably wondering if I have any songs that represent any of my wives, directly. This one does, mainly because the album it was on was released in September 1978, two months after Suzann and I got married in Vancouver. She loved it, and I loved that she loved it.

But there was a fly in the ointment: the first line. This was a song that reminded Suzann of Amy’s father. They’re gone to Montreal on one of their road trips, and these words now became her cherished memory of their time together.

In fact, this song would represent symbolically his telling her how much he loved and missed her. Not really a good way to start off our marriage, was it?

Suzann and I saw Gino Vennelli perform live on stage in Vancouver, years later.

I Shall Name You the Fishermen Three:

Wynken, Blynken and Nod (1889)

I used to have this book when I was a very young child, and I’m sure my mother read several of his poems to me. This one stands out for its rhythmic quality and its innocent imagery.

In 1969, The Irish Rovers recorded a version (word for word) of it, which I used to play for my daughters when they were young, also. It gives me a feeling of secure comfort, even now.

Mom and I saw The Irish Rovers perform live on stage in Salmon Arm. (Thanks, Mom.)

Getting It Done!

COVID-19 Vaccination (Pfizer)

Selfie by Susan Miller (on Facebook)

As I reported in an update, we got our vaccination two weeks early! Here is the chart for the event:

In astrological terms, this is a more satisfying result that the original appointment date.(Especially nice is the connection between my natal North Node and the ‘event’ Sun/Venus conjunction @10-11 Aries.)

I think I can breathe a little easier now (and, thankfully, we’ve had no adverse reactions).
