We’re Gonna Have a Good Time Then

Cat’s in the Cradle (1974)

Note the B-side, again

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking ‘fore I knew it, and as he grew
He’d say “I’m gonna be like you, dad”
“You know I’m gonna be like you”

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
“When you coming home, dad?” “I don’t know when”
But we’ll get together then
You know we’ll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, thanks for the ball, dad, come on let’s play
Can you teach me to throw, I said-a, not today
I got a lot to do, he said, that’s okay
And he, he walked away, but his smile never dimmed
It said, I’m gonna be like him, yeah
You know I’m gonna be like him

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
“When you coming home, dad?” “I don’t know when”
But we’ll get together then
You know we’ll have a good time then

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while?
He shook his head, and they said with a smile
What I’d really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
“When you coming home, son?” “I don’t know when”
But we’ll get together then, dad
You know we’ll have a good time then

I’ve long since retired, my son’s moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, I’d like to see you if you don’t mind
He said, I’d love to, dad, if I can find the time
You see, my new job’s a hassle, and the kids have the flu
But it’s sure nice talking to you, dad
It’s been sure nice talking to you
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
He’d grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
“When you coming home, son?” “I don’t know when”
But we’ll get together then, dad

We’re gonna have a good time then

Sandy Chapin / Harry F. Chapin

I’m sure this happens to every father and son. In our version, I left when he was three, saw him again at six, then nothing much between us until he was almost 30. I suspect his mantra become, “I’m not gonna be like you, dad…” (I have regrets.)

I got to see Harry Chapin perform live on stage in Vancouver, before he died.

I Want to Close My Eyes and Hide

Sometimes When We Touch (1977)

You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I’d rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
In what you say or do
I’m only just beginning
To see the real you

.
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty’s too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I want to hold you till I die
Till we both break down and cry
I want to hold you till the fear in me subsides

Barry Mann, Dan Hill

You may have noticed by now that my musical memories are bouncing around time at the moment. This song is no different. It is the truth of my relationship with Mona. It’s all well and fine to have my Moon in Scorpio, it’s quite another matter to be confronted with a partner whose Sun is there, too. Turbulence and jealousy would be the main themes here.

Our relationship was beginning to unravel in 1977, and this song symbolized the agony I was going through. This next excerpt puts it into context:

At times I think we’re drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
But then the passion flares again

By the time we’d moved back to St. Catharines in Ontario from Vancouver, our relationship kept limping along, until the day I met my future second wife.

The song is a dirge. It is hard to listen to and the meaning is too deep for a ‘normal’ hit, but a hit it became in 1978. It also became a national joke:

In 1996, This Hour Has 22 Minutes ran a comedic sketch in which Canada was taken over by terrorists who in turn were promptly defeated when the Canadian Armed Forces deployed the song as their secret weapon

Here’s Dan Hill’s definitive version from 1994.

“I want to hold you ’til the fear in me subsides…“

Save Every Day ‘Til Eternity Passes Away

Time in a Bottle (1973)

Note the B-side

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
Is to save everyday ’til eternity passes away
Just to spend it with you

And if I could make days last forever
And if words could make wishes come true
We’d walk through the fields of ripening corn
And time would flow through us and you
And I’d save everyday like a treasure and then
Again and again I’d spend them with you

And I’ve looked around enough to know
You’re the one I wanna go through time with (ooh-ooh)
Through time with (ooh-ooh)
Through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you

So if only I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
Is to save everyday ’til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

And I’d save everyday like a treasure and then
Again and again I’d spend them with you (spend them with you)

I’ve looked around enough to know
You’re the one I wanna go through time with (ooh-ooh)
Through time with (ooh-ooh)
Through time with

Jim Croce

This one is different. I suspect that it became more important to me after I separated from Judi. It’s a song for my son, Derek. It doesn’t require any other explanation. (I love you, son.)

You Don’t Know What It’s Like…

To Love Somebody (1967)

Bee Gees’ 1st album cover from Genius

There’s a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be lived with you
Lived with you
There’s a way everybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring
If I ain’t got you, ain’t got you? Hey babe

You don’t know what it’s like, baby
You don’t know what it’s like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain’t got to be so blind
And I’m blind, so so sorrily blind
I’m a man, can’t you see
What I am
I live and I breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain’t got you, ain’t got? Hey babe…

B.Gibb/ M.Gibb/ R.Gibb

Another song from the soundtrack of my life: this one speaks of unrequited love. It relates to the year that I lost Susan to the vicissitudes of life, after we had met the previous summer. My mourning of that loss propelled me into a relationship with the woman who would become my first wife, three years later, and the mother of my first child.

Why is this song important to me? Because after I left that marriage in 1975 and moved west to British Columbia, I heard it sung live for the first time by Rosalind Keene. It made my heart ache for Susan, all over again. (But she didn’t know a thing about it.)

It took me 40 years to finally get back on track to what I was meant to do, all those years ago.

Note the date…

One More Step in a Pilgrim’s Progress

I’m Scheduled to Get My COVID-19 Vaccination Next Month

It took about an hour of on-line and telephone frustration. I was on hold on two different phones at the same time as my on-line application stalled at the booking date(s). In the end, Susan got us booked through a family member. Thank you, Angela.

Here are what the date and time look like compared with my birth chart:

Most of the ‘event’ chart looks unconnected with my birth chart, until you drill down further:

The ‘event’ Ascendant is opposite my natal Venus; the ‘event’ Midheaven is opposite my natal Neptune, and inconjunct my natal Saturn. And the ‘event’ Pluto is still within 3 degrees of my natal Mercury. So the timing seems correct, but that ‘event’ Mars @ 24 Gemini is a bit concerning, being opposite my natal Ascendant. Still, beggars can’t be choosers, can they?

Karma: Can We Ever Really Forgive Ourselves?

No Sugar Tonight (1970)

Lonely feeling deep inside
Find a corner where I can hide
Silent footsteps crowding me
Sudden darkness but I can see

No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me

In the silence of her mind
Quiet movements where I can find
Grabbing for me with her eyes
Now I’m falling from her skies

No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me

Burton Cummings / Randy Bachmann

I’m letting some songs do most of my talking these days. This one is related to a dream I had last night that comes from a remembrance of something that happened in the early 1970s, so the soundtrack is accurate for the memory. I won’t be discussing the event, just the feeling of emptiness that came later.

Karma has been on my mind. As an karmic astrologer, I see the effects of it everyday when I draw up birth charts. And because of my focus on reincarnation, the charts present me with a stark reminder that we are all ONE.

Most people come into the world bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Some bear the burdens of past life memories which cloud the sunny days of youth, the so-called halcyon years.

I am one of those individuals.

My search to know myself has led me to come very unpleasant truths: I was not a very good person in my recent past. Nor the one before that one. I’ve had some bright spots throughout the centuries, but overall I have had an awful track record. During my time in the psychic development circle at Cynthia’s home, I was placed in the ‘west’ of the four quadrants of the group: that was her way of letting my unconscious know that I had a long way to go to arrive at full-consciousness. The point wasn’t lost on me.

What most concerns me is that others are wary of me: perhaps they ‘know’ of my past lives and are assuming that I will revert to type, whatever that may be. At 17, my present wife said that she couldn’t trust me not to hurt her, emotionally. That’s why we didn’t get together properly until we were in our late 50’s, some forty years later. And she may have been right…

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Galatians 6:7 (KJV)

If you come into this world with a clear conscience (the past having been wiped out), you can get on with the job of living without pondering the ‘what ifs’ and ‘if onlys’. But, some day, you will be faced with the same scenario from a past life, or two, to see if you can do better this time. Without conscious awareness, these tests can be tricky to pass.

And it doesn’t really get easier when you’re ‘woke’. So, perhaps the Golden Rule is the only way to measure up to a higher standard. But most people are still way too selfish to understand that.

So my question at the beginning of this post is what I want to say to myself and all of you:

Can we ever really forgive ourselves?

Oh Lord, Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood

Helena Blavatsky (July 31, 1831 [OS] – May 8, 1891)

Baby, do you understand me now
Sometimes I feel a little mad
But don’t you know that no one alive
Can always be an angel
When things go wrong I seem to be bad
But I’m just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood

Caldwell Gloria, Marcus Sol, Benjamin Bennie

There is probably not a more polarizing figure in Spiritualist history than the Madame. Some think she’s the ‘real deal’, others think she is a fraud and a charlatan. I’m on the fence, really.

This chart is rectified by me, although I cannot remember for the life of me what my reference points were. I did this birth chart years ago, but hesitated to write about it, until now.

There are two inconjuncts, one dependent on a correct birth time, the other not changing throughout her birth day.

Mercury Inconjunct Pluto

You have a rather complicated and sometimes tricky mind. You usually prefer to do things in roundabout and involved ways instead of being simple and direct.

On the positive side, this means tha you enjoy solving puzzles, tracking down mysteries and finding out about hidden matters. At school you might do research in science. You have a natural ability to understand how people’s minds work, what makes them act as they do, and what they are thinking, which is quite amazing for someone your age.

On the native side, however, you might misuse this ability by trying to control people’s thoughts and words. Also you may love mysteries so much that you get involved in complicated plots and arrangements with your friends. You may enjoy working in secret and creating an air of mystery about yourself, but this could backfire and make others misunderstand you or even fear what you are doing. It is important to show people hat you are honest and that you are not hiding anything. Otherwise they will probably suspect you, even if you are totally innocent. And if you aren’t, they will know it for certain.

On another level, this aspect can mean that at certain times in your life you will go through tremendous psychological changes. All your thoughts and opinions will change completely. These stages may seem difficult, but you will be much better off if you let go of the past and welcome the new ideas.

Jupiter Inconjunct Ascendant

With this aspect, you may discover that in order to grow and get ahead in life, you will have to put aside your own needs and do whatever the situation or other people require. At times you will go through tremendous and possibly painful creative changes in your life, in which everything that you are is replace by a new order. Your environment may change radically, or you may lose all your old friends and find a whole set of new ones. During these times you will arrive at new understandings and realizations that make it impossible for your life to continue as before. You must always be open to new ideas and be willing to change your outlook on life.

Probably you will accomplish the most if you direct your energies to tasks that benefit others as well as yourself. It may be that much of your work will not benefit you directly, but in the long run you will gain from it. Even while you are young you need to make a useful contribution to society, and in doing this you will learn and grow as an individual. This is not merely a plea for you to be unselfish, but an assertion that you will achieve your own goals most quickly by doing work that helps others.

On the other hand, if you try to get what you want for yourself alone, especially at other people’s expense, you will find it hard to get anywhere. Also you will have difficulty maintaining your friendships and other relationships. With this aspect, being selfish could have very negative results for your eventual happiness. Do you try to selfishly hold on to what you have. If you give of yourself freely, you will have more.

Conclusion

While not referring to anyone or anything else, this person figures strongly in my personal history for this present lifetime. I have read both Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine, cover to cover. I cannot say that I ‘enjoyed’ them, but they provided me with much food for thought.

The one poem I wrote in 1984, called Bread and Wine, brought a new understanding of the Roman Catholic Eucharist to me. This was inspired by Madame Blavatsky’s writing.

So, the jury is out. Is she a fraud or is she an inspired individual? I recognize that her method of writing is very similar to mine: while compiling her work, she was shown passages from other individual’s ‘secret’ work, which she then shared with the world. Does that make her a plagiarist? Does that make me one? Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood.

Post Script

To others, it might seem that I make every post about me, and on the surface that might be true, except that, in my own defence, I wish to remind the reader that we are all ONE.

Let the one with eyes to see, view these connections.

The Bow, the Arrows and the Quiver

Group Work vs. Cosmic Family Dynamics

It’s been an interesting couple of days. Along the way, great lessons have been learned by all concerned. And, depending on one’s point-of-view, a great emancipation success and a dismal failure to launch.

My mother used to have a real problem with we children talking among ourselves. She called it gossiping. We called it staying in touch. And for some reason, her wish to keep us compartmentalized seems to be still working in our lives, even though she’s been gone for 18 years in May. But I never forget, and that’s what this post is about.

It is very revealing when someone comes from a dysfunctional family situation: single parent; only child; orphaned; no children; and divorced parents. It can be devastating to the individual, and the need to control one’s environment to ‘protect’ one’s ego can be overwhelming.

But what if that gets in the way of working in conjunction with other people?

That seems to be what has happened here. So, to remind us all:

There’s Been a Break in the Lines of Communication

Hopefully, Normal Service will Resume

TV interruption card from the 1950’s

If you follow my posts on this ‘channel’ you may have noticed that I have been concentrating on a particular story involving a specific individual from the past. This had been at the behest of another individual who had a connection with that first person. All permission had been expressly granted to do this research into the astrological perspective of reincarnation.

But something went wrong, and the project has been suspended, temporarily, at least. Now, if you try to find the specific posts about that specific individual and his present reincarnation, you won’t be able to, as I’ve deleted all references to him on these pages.

In fact, this project may not be taken up again, in the foreseeable future, as I’ve learned my lesson here: when doing karmic astrological research, I will stick to one subject matter, me.
