Before Psychology, There Was Astrology

Carl Gustav Jung (July 26, 1875 – June 6, 1961)

Our mother was a great admirer of Carl Jung. His understanding of archetypes made sense to her. And the idea that astrology was psychology’s precursor makes sense to me

The timing of his birth is “iffy,” to say the least, but I’m keeping what my Kepler 7.0 program has because other astrology sites give (about) the same time.

I suppose if ever there was a Herald of the Age of Aquarius, Jung is the man. His rising sign is a major clue (if the time of his birth is right). What I particularly appreciate is that his Moon and Pluto are conjunct in Taurus: talk about having his head in the clouds, his heart in his thinking and his feet on the ground, all at the same time.

And having a Yod pointing at Pluto meant that he would uncover the truth, with perseverance (Mars) and expansive thought (Jupiter). In other words, he would go further than others had before him: he didn’t suffer from limitations.

Astrology, as we know it now, suffers from a scientific conundrum. “How can a bunch of rocks in space affect life on earth?” It’s the question of the ages. Does anyone have an answer? Jung seems to: archetypes. These ‘energies’ (represented by the planets and the moon and the sun) have always been around us. We somehow recognized that the positioning of these solar entities against the backdrop of the zodiac gave meaning to our lives. Of course, that doesn’t make astrology scientifically provable, but it does direct our thoughts toward the Universe and the Intelligence that set these cycles in motion. Even in Shakespeare’s time, people understood the term “star-crossed lovers.”

We are not tested until we try to go against our true ‘nature’. Then we may succeed.

But what is our true nature? Are we good or are we evil?

The Final Word is Jung’s

“Know thyself.”

Footnote in History: Plagiarism or Inspiration?

A Sucessora (1934)

Courtesy of Wikipedia

Have you ever tried to write a novel? It’s a lonely occupation. And the pressure of your readers and publishers breathing down your neck can be more than most could endure, especially if you have suddenly become fashionable.

So, I suspect that this is what happened to Daphne du Maurier while writing “Rebecca”.

Most authors become sponges, soaking up many different influences, sometimes without even realizing what those influences are. And the incestuous relationships in the publishing industry would be a breeding ground of potential plagiarism due to the sharing of manuscripts. But did Daphne actually succumb to this (as she was sued by another author of doing), or was the world just jealous of her success?

Meet Carolina Nabuco (February 9, 1890 – August 18, 1981)

This image was taken when Ms. Nabuco was 60 years old. Doesn’t she look like a writer?

This is an ‘inspired’ birth time (which actually belongs to a different Nabuco: her father, Joaquim, the Brazilian Ambassador to the United States, born on August 19, 1849. Interesting coincidence: Carolina died August 18, 1981). The timing isn’t confirmed.

What I was hoping to see was if there is any duplicity in her chart. And there might be, with that Neptune/Pluto conjunction in Gemini. But that could also indicate a very perceptive awareness of other people’s inner thinking and motivations. A double-edged sword, it can cut both ways.

However, there are two inconjuncts, and they follow a familiar pattern.

Mercury Inconjunct Saturn

This aspect can have several different meanings. First of all, you may have hidden fears that are difficult to express, but they cause you to do things that others can’t understand. These may include fear of the dark or of certain places or people. Or this aspect can mean that you often feel depressed and sad for no apparent reason. You tend to see the serious side of life, and it weighs on you more than on most people.

On the plus side, this aspect can make you a very careful thinker. You may not attempt anything beyond your abilities as you see them, but whatever you do attempt will be done very well. You are a neat and careful worker.

Uranus Inconjunct Ascendant

Your need for freedom may interfere with your close relationships. When you are with others, even those you like, you feel very restless but you can’t get up and leave because you want to be with them. This is typical of the ambiguity that comes with this transit. Certainly, the more others try to restrict your freedom of movement, the more you try to get away.

The restless energies of this aspect should be given some kind of release, because otherwise they can turn inward to create the kind of rash and compulsive actions that lead to accidents.

Now, is it just me or do these aspects accurately describe the two Mrs. de Winters in Daphne du Maurier’s story? Strange that.

Oh, and one last, but not least, detail: when the second Mrs de Winter enters the ball, she is announced as Caroline de Winter. Otherwise she is unnamed. Significant?

Did Daphne du Maurier Write “Rebecca” to Document Herself?

Rebecca (2020)

I am not a fan of “Gothic” romances, or films. But this latest film version of the 1938 classic, written by Dame du Maurier, is (seemingly) quite faithful to the story line.

After a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo with handsome widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), a newly married young woman (Lily James) arrives at Manderley, her new husband’s imposing family estate on a windswept English coast. Naive and inexperienced, she begins to settle into the trappings of her new life, but finds herself battling the shadow of Maxim’s first wife, the elegant and urbane Rebecca, whose haunting legacy is kept alive by Manderley’s sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas)

Netflix

Manderley Forever (2015)

Dame Daphne du Maurier DBE (13 May 1907Ò19 April 1989) was a famous British novelist best known for her short story “The Birds” and her classic novel Rebecca, published in 1938.

I have not read this book, yet, but I will. For the moment, though, I want to share a couple of insights that I got from watching the film last night and doing my research this morning.

Manderley may be a fictional house/estate but it clearly is based on Du Maurier’s leased home near Fowey, Cornwall: Menabilly. She lived there between 1943 and 1969.

That’s the hint, folks. This story is about the two sides of the author’s personality.

Daphne du Maurier (May 13, 1907 – April 19, 1989)

I have rectified the birth time. Most astrology sites list an inaccurate time of 4:00 pm. That would make the Mars/Uranus opposite the Midheaven. That’s too heavy-handed to me. The masculine energy that she claims ‘drives’ the writing needs to be more closely aligned to her 1st House personality. Because Mars and Uranus are in the ‘secretive’ sign of Scorpio, the rising sign needs some compensatory energy, Sagittarius. So I chose 10:00 pm instead. That opens up the chart to a more ‘interesting’ double Yod: Ascendant inconjunct Sun inconjunct Midheaven; and Sun inconjunct Midheaven inconjunct Saturn.

Because Daphne married her husband, Sir Frederick Browning, at about age 25, I see the Pluto placement of this rectified chart as an ‘eye-opener’ for her. And that Gemini Moon hasn’t gone unnoticed either. I suspect she always identified with both sides.

The opposition of Jupiter/Neptune with the Mars/Uranus conjunction made her a surprised, celebrated author. Her fame grew through the years and she wrote up until her death in 1989.

The timing of this ‘death’ chart is randomized. It is said that she died in her sleep, but no one has said whether that was day or night time. The reason I’m sticking with the time of 12:28:42 pm is because it highlights a similar pattern to her birth chart. A Yod, but this time involving the Ascendant and Jupiter pointing to Uranus. Free at last.

When you combine the birth and death charts, some interesting connections are made:

This is a person who lived her life to the fullest, and completed her objectives. She died with only one inconjunct, involving her ‘natal’ Mercury and her ‘fatal’ Moon.

The writer will forever live on in her books. But she noted wryly…

After a Long Gestation Period, and Extended Labour Pains…

The State of Israel is Born

Strange prompt, this one: I was listening to Andy Williams sing “The Exodus Song (This Land is Mine)” and I suddenly connected two events in history in my mind.

Firstly, though, I’d like to share the birth chart with you:

This is the exact moment when the declaration was read. As anyone who has seen the movie Exodus or read the book by Leon Uris knows it was a struggle to get to this point.

Following World War II, the life of the Jewish nation is uncertain. The United Nations is contemplating taking a vote on creating a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Until then, many Jews are exiled from much of Europe – especially Germany – and as they have nowhere to go, they are sent to detention camps among other places Cypress. Ari Ben Canaan, a Palestinian Jew, wants to smuggle as many Jews as possible into Palestine. In his mind, the easiest way to influence the United Nations vote is by sheer numbers residing in Palestine. Ari commandeers a ship with 600 Jews, and after some obstacles, manages to make it to Palestine. Ari grew up in a mixed Arab/Jewish community in Palestine. His best childhood friend, Taha, is Arab and is now leader of the Arab section of the community. Regardless of the United Nations vote, the road to Ari’s dream of a peaceful Jewish homeland in Palestine will be a difficult one because despite his own model community, extremist factions, both on the Jewish side and the anti-Zionist side, will never see living together in peace and advocate violence to achieve their own ends. Within this fray is widowed American nurse, Kitty Fremont. Kitty is initially naive about the conflict and hostile toward Ari’s means of achieving his goals. However, she ultimately falls in love with him and with his dream despite their religious and cultural differences.

IMDb

So does this struggle show up in the chart? I think it does, with the two inconjuncts.

Sun Inconjunct Ascendant

Your relationships with other people can be very intense. While you are young, they may be quite difficult, because you feel that others will accept you only if you deny yourself in some way. Or you may constantly feel you should put off doing what you want in order to do what you have to do. Usually your ideas about what you have to do come from the people around you. Also, contacts with other people will frequently force you to make serious, major psychological changes. Difficulties in your relationships with friends and family are signs of profound internal changes.

You may find that no matter how hard you try to show others who you really are, they misunderstand you somehow. This is because the angular relationship between your rising sign and Sun sign indicates that your internal struggles are quite different from the energies that you show to the world. You are not intentionally dishonest with the world, you simply present a confusing complex of energies. As you get older, you will learn more about your effect on people, which will enable you to put the two sides of your personality together so that they work smoothly. Be patient and do not hurry. Look at each relationship as an opportunity to learn more about yourself through your effects upon others. You will know you have learned this when you no longer attract people who are psychologically difficult to deal with.

Jupiter Inconjunct Midheaven

This aspect can mean that you have mixed feelings towards adults and persons in authority over you. Although you know that they have your best interests at heart and that they want you to succeed at your objectives, it often seems as if their demands are keeping you from doing want you want. When you want to go off and have fun, for example, you are told to finish your work first. At times you want to break free of this restricting influence and go off by yourself.

The problem with this aspect is to find a balance between, on the one hand, expressing yourself creatively, perhaps artistically, and having a good time and, on the other hand, getting ahead in life, learning the ways of the world and finding an acceptable role in society. You know you have to make sacrifices in order to accomplish anything of value.

Because the rising sign is Libra, these aspects have a very strong influence on how the State of Israel views its allies and enemies, including their neighbouring states.

I’ve discussed this earlier event previously. It took more than 30 years and two World Wars to effect this result. That’s a drop in the Dead Sea when you compare it to almost 2,000 years since the Roman Empire scattered the Jews into Europe and Asia in 70 CE.

The Yod that connects these two charts proves their correctness: ‘agreement’ Sun is inconjunct ‘Israel birth’ Pluto and Mercury.

It was Destiny.

Once a Rebel, Always a Rebel

Tom Hayden (December 11, 1939 – October 23, 2016)

December 1975, Los Angeles, California, USA — American actress, writer, and political activist Jane Fonda with her husband, politician and candidate to the Senate Tom Hayden and their son Troy Garity. — Image by © Jim McHugh/Sygma/Corbis

The depiction of Tom Hayden in the film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, by Eddie Redmayne, seemed muted, at least to me. But then, I only knew of this man through his political activism and his marriage to, and association with, Jane Fonda.

Now, looking at his birth chart, I think they got it right.

Most astrology sites, and my Kepler 7.0 program, state that his supposed birth time was 2:00 pm. But that wasn’t dynamic enough to explain how Hayden became a spokesperson for the anti-war movement in the late 60’s, early 70’s. The alternative time was suggested as 2:00 am. I think that birth time fits him, and his life, better.

Sun Inconjunct Uranus

There is a side of your personality that is very restless and impatient with rules, even when you know they are for your own good. You want very much to go your own way and do your own thing, even when you aren’t entirely sure that it is the right direction for you. So you rebel in subtle ways by having sudden fits of obstinacy and moods of feeling very contrary, especially to your parents or other authority figures.

Sometimes the energy of this aspect comes out in other ways as well. At times sudden upsets may occur in your life that totally alter your plans, so that you have to change course completely. When this happens, you must learn to yield to the pressure and flow with the change. It may be difficult for you to realize it, but such an upset occurs because you have blocked much-needed changes in your life, or they have been denied you. However upsetting these changes are at first, they will give you the freedom you need to grow as an individual. Unfortunately, if you always wait for changes to come in this manner, they are likely to be very startling and unsettling. If you learn to assert your individuality more directly, the changes will not seem so upsetting.

As with many other inconjuncts, astrologers have found that if you suppress your need and desire for freedom in your life, this energy may be expressed through illness or accident. While you are young, you may have accidents because you suddenly make unpredictable, rash movements. Later in life this aspect can signify cardiac problems, but only if you suppress your natural need for self-expression.

Saturn Inconjunct Neptune

This aspect is strongest when either of these planets is also conjunct or opposition the Ascendant or Midheaven. It can have a variety of effects, one of which may be difficulty in relating fantasy and imagination, on one hand, to reality, duty, obligation and work, on the other. Usually the reality, duty and work aspect of this combination is dominant, at least at first. Your imaginative side tends to be transformed into nervousness, fear and irrational anxieties. The most negative manifestation of this aspect is a feeling that you have to keep a tight lid on yourself and that if you look inside yourself to closely, you will find only emptiness and disintegration. It is difficult for you to realize that this is not the truth about your inner self.

If you do not learn to confront your inner fears now, they may surface as chronic physical ailments, although that is not likely to be apparent early in life. If you can learn to release your creativity, you can avoid negative physical effects.

Tom Hayden died four years ago, yesterday.

He was married to actress and social activist Jane Fonda for 17 years, and was the father of actor Troy Garity. Hayden lived in Los Angeles from 1971 and was married to his third wife, Barbara Williams, at the time of his death. He and Williams adopted a son, Liam (born 2000). Hayden died in Santa Monica, California, on October 23, 2016, aged 76, following a lengthy illness, including a stroke. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica, California, where he was the first interment in “Eternal Meadow,” an eco-friendly section

The Whole World’s Watching…

The Trial of the Chicago 7

Another chapter in the history books, this time highlighting injustice in an American courtroom. Let’s face it, it was a media circus, and the participants knew they were on trial for who they were, not what they’d done.

Each generation thinks that their grievances against the government, whether it be about war, poverty and/or racial discrimination are new, but nothing could be further from the truth. Even then, Black Lives Matter-ed, as the mistreatment of Bobby Seale showed. But that decade (the 1960’s) was very upsetting to the status quo, and nothing more so than the Vietnam War protests, especially in the States. For the first time, young people were demanding that the war should end, that the U.S. should withdraw from Southeast Asia, and that all Americans should be brought safely home.

It took until the mid-70’s before that finally happened.

So, just to be clear, this is not the end of the story, because

“What goes around, comes around again.”

Happy (Belated) 40th Birthday Wishes!

Kim Kardashian (October 21, 1980)

Do you think this is the real reason for my dream two nights ago? I wasn’t aware of her birth date, so it wasn’t something conscious in me of knowledge of her 40th birthday.

Anyway, I hope she enjoyed the milestone.

Her birth time is considered ‘excellent’, so I think I can rely upon it. And the striking thing about the position of the Moon is how it interacts with most of the rest of the planets in her chart. There’s only one inconjunct, involving the Sun and the Moon.

Sun Inconjunct Moon

This aspect suggests that there is a subtle conflict going on inside you that may sometimes create emotional problems. The Sun signifies your conscious personality, the way in which you act and the kinds of activities that you like to get involved in. The Moon signifies the emotional and less conscious side of you. It indicates the habits that take over when you are not acting consciously and feelings that come up from deep inside you. The inconjunct aspect between the Sun and Moon means that the Sun part of your personality is quite different from the Moon part, and it may be hard for you to relate them to each other. It is as if you are divided in two, so that whenever you have to make an important decision, especially one that involves your feelings, the different sides of your personality want to go in opposite directions. You sometimes find it difficult to decide if you like something or if you want to take part in some activity.

But a much more difficult problem arises if you decide that one of these personalities is good and the other bad, so that you try to repress and hold down any behavior from the “bad” side. Unfortunately, that only makes it more difficult to handle that side, so that you have intense urges to do things that you think you should not do. You begin to act in ways that betray the image of yourself that you are trying to build up.

The only solution is to accept both sides of your personality, for they are both you, and it is important to express them both. It is only your attitude of rejection that makes one side good and the other side bad.

Is this why she gets involved with “bad” boys?

I’m combining Kim’s birth chart with Kanye’s to show how ‘correct’ his rectified birth chart really is: Kim’s Sun being conjunct to Kanye’s Ascendant speaks volumes. And the Yods affect both individuals equally. At the same time, Kanye’s Neptune is conjunct Kim’s Ascendant. They were made for each other. Plus, it helps that their Moons are within 8 degrees of each other in Pisces. They have popularity in spades, for sure.

It Was Said that He was “Incorrigible”

The Babe (1992)

Somehow I never saw this film before. The reason may have been that I was otherwise occupied while living in the UK. But I have always admired Babe Ruth, as a sports ‘star’ and I am a fan of John Goodman’s acting. The blending of the myth and the man is great. But the pathos is overwhelming. Here was a man that loved baseball, but baseball didn’t love him back. Talk about unrequited love.

Incorrigible

adjective:

  1. (of a person or their tendencies) not able to be corrected, improved, or reformed.

Oxford Languages

All the astrology sites have 1:45 pm as his birth time. Well, I’ve decided to flip that on its head by using 1:45 am, instead. A different picture emerges that seems more in keeping with the enigma of the Babe. However, the one thing that wouldn’t change is the inconjunct between Saturn and Pluto.

Saturn Inconjunct Pluto

If either of these planets is close to conjunction or opposition with the Ascendant or Midheaven, its effects can be quite strong. It signifies a feeling that you must work extremely hard merely to keep your life running smoothly on a day-to-day level. Often this aspect is associated with quite a bit of tension, especially in your muscles, but also in your emotional approach to life. You need to learn that the world is not always a place of struggle and that occasionally it is good to let go and relax. If your home life has been harsh or difficult, it will bring out the worst side of this aspect, and in time you will develop a cynical attitude toward the world in general. You will become intolerant of your own and others’ weaknesses, and you will take advantage of every opportunity, even if it means hurting someone else. But this is likely to happen only if you have not been given a reasonable break or if you haven’t been allowed to be a child, to be weak and make mistakes.

Even under favorable circumstances, this aspect usually means that you are resistant to change, that you hold on to any situation, no matter how bad, until it is totally intolerable. Then when change does take place, it has to create a revolution and a total breakdown of everything that came before it. You must learn to adapt to circumstances a bit more gracefully and not be afraid of occasional compromise.

This aspect usually does mean that you are tough and can contend with a great deal of adversity, but don’t develop an attitude that makes adversity inevitable.

You may find it difficult to get along with others, because you are unnecessarily afraid of what they want from you. Learn to associate only with people whom you can trust.

Moon Conjunct Jupiter

[This aspect is inconjunct the Ascendant in the chart above, so I won’t go to that level, as it may not be accurate, due to the timing of his birth, but it gives these two a bit of oomph, for sure.]

This aspect is very easy to live with. You are probably well liked, because your optimistic attitude warms people up. You can even make others feel good when they are depressed. And when you are depressed, you don’t spread it around. Even in your worst mood you can look at the situation with humor and laugh at yourself, which eases your depression and makes the people around you feel good.

You are quite a generous person who likes to help others and protect those who need it. But you aren’t overly possessive either. You won’t take advantage of anyone who is in trouble. You are tolerant of the ways in which others are different from yourself, in fact, you are pleased to find them because they help you learn more about the world,

You are a fun-loving person who enjoys good times. The only negative side to this aspect is that you probably prefer having fun to working, so it may be hard to settle done and do what has to be done. Or you may carry your good times so far that you get physically exhausted.

He Grabbed the World with Both Hands and Wouldn’t Let Go

Because Babe Ruth’s death time is known, the accuracy of his death chart is incontrovertible. The Yod in the combined chart shows that he probably overdid it (‘natal’ Mars inconjunct ‘fatal’ Mars and ‘fatal’ Jupiter). I’d say he wore himself out, and the throat cancer gave him the ‘reason’ to lay his poor body to rest. But could he have done it any other way? I think not.

He was a legend in his own lifetime.
