A Dream (Hell, It’s a Nightmare)

Screen-Shot-2017-12-26-at-10.06.21-AM

I glaze into her eyes, purple haze, smoking black;

She shows her teeth

(They’re clean,

Mine aren’t).

She crosses her eyes to look at me, making her squint;

She tries to foresee

(But can’t very far

Beyond me).

I say dumb sounds like, “I’ll stay or go away”;

She rattles her brains,

(Which rattles me)

And sends me away.

I’ve gone insane and can only babble dripping words;

She has deaf ears

(Which hear sounds

But can’t see).

My eyes become misty: they’re raining inside my head;

(I wander about,

Lost for awhile)

And then I wake up.

Love

tumblr_ll5n3vrde51qfwg0ho1_400

I gaze into her eyes (soft-colored blue, gazing back),

She smiles,

I grin,

And we hold hands.

She stares away from me (into the Vacuum of my mind);

She thinks about the future,

My love,

And me.

I tell her, “I’ll never go.” (she’s still unsure)

She shakes her head,

But not her mind,

Her thoughts.

I plead insanity (for words that have spilled from my lips),

She hears,

But shows no signs

To me.

Finally I make sense (to her understanding: she seems sure),

She takes my hand again,

Smiles,

And kisses me.

Life (version three)

long-road-4

The Meaning is gone

And Time is passing:

Daydreams keep coming

With every yawn.

Crooked thoughts make crooked paths

That my mind will follow

And the resulting sorrow

Will almost always stir my wrath.

Love is a lengthy highway

With many bends and turns

And at ev’ry bend I learn

That knowledge keeps me on my way.

Sometimes I think I know

Why I do the things I do,

But when I look at you

I find the answer’s “No!”

I know I’m of little or no use

And that I’m insignificant;

But One Word would give me a hint

That life is not for abuse.

The Lionel and Bertie Show

2fdc69eb8a720dc2c9ac1971c2d888af

The King’s Speech (2010)

Queen Elizabeth II gave a speech on the 75th anniversary of VE Day. She was recreating what her father, George VI, had done on that glorious day.

Did you know the King had a speech impediment? Since his childhood, he had a persistent stammer. He never expected to become king, never expected that he would have to be the voice of his people. But that’s all water under the bridge, now.

This award-winning film is an inside look at how Bertie learned to overcome his difficulties with the help of Lionel Logue, his speech therapist.

The film was on television last night. (Good timing…)

Life (version two)

Pike-perch

Life’s meaning’s lost and Time’s the same:

My dreaming goes on, as does the rain.

Thoughts are a guided path that is ignored:

I’ll choke my stony wrath which once had roared.

Love is a route that’s full of snares:

A spiny pike which leaves some tears.

I’ve tried to be someone I’m not,

But now I see I’m just a dot.

I matter not, which is no lie:

I’ll be no one when I die.

Pilgrimage as Metaphor

81A+tZqo1hL

The Camino

Caroline Myss posted a video on Facebook this morning. In it she discussed her observations about the Camino de Santiago. The salient point she made was that stepping off the path, you returned to the ordinary world, and when you stepped back on it, everyone knew where they were headed and helped each other achieve their goal.

It’s not the first time I’ve seen something of the Way: Shirley MacLaine wrote about her journey in her book The Camino; Paulo Coelho wrote a novel called The Pilgrimage. Two different stories, one destination. That’s the metaphor.

In truth, we are each on our own pilgrimage. Our way isn’t the only way, but that doesn’t matter because the exercise is to follow where others have trod, and experience it for ourselves. It’s the same for Muslims doing the Hajj to Mecca: they are meant to experience the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

The Fool

Is this where we have seen the Pilgrim before? I would say so…

Suppertime

MV5BYjQ1ZjM2YzctNThmMy00ZmNmLWE0ZjMtMzE4MWQ2ZDUyZjY3XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMzQ0MDE3NzM@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,1465,1000_AL_

It’s taken me years

But now I know what it’s like

To have supper all ready

And then be told that the most

Important person will be late:

No, I didn’t shed tears

But I felt like taking a hike

To wear off this bad, heady

Feeling of being left at the post

Like a slow horse leaving the gate.

Still I have no fears

That you could easily psych

Me out like a weak eddy

Fighting the current at the coast

When the waves refuse to abate;

For the envy of your peers

Keeps me looking after your tike

Getting her ready for beddy-

Byes and cooking her a small roast

Which she won’t find ornate.

So if you are someone who hears

About the kid holding back the dike

As if the flood from a medi-

Æval story had tried to boast

About changing the course of fate,

Remember that he who has ears

Can get rid of the mic

And make sure that the teddy-

Bear eats all of his burnt toast

But doesn’t complain about what he ate.

Not America’s Finest Hour

Cuban Prisoners

The Bay of Pigs Invasion

While writing, yesterday, about Dag Hammarskjöld’s plane crash in 1961, I started wondering about the US failed attempt to invade Cuba and remove Fidel Castro from the world stage. It was an embarrassing diplomatic fiasco. But most people will not realize that Eisenhower was behind the plan to restore democracy to the island. Unfortunately, Kennedy stopped the second part of the planned coup, because he thought it would fail.

There are three inconjuncts:

Moon Inconjunct Midheaven

Work very hard to develop an objective awareness of what you are doing and where you are going. You will need this understanding to guide your emotions, which might otherwise lead you astray and make it difficult for you to focus on your goals. Learn to see others’ points of view, even if you cannot accept them. Learn to make logical decisions, and do not let passing moods color your attitudes about yourself and your life too much.

Mercury Inconjunct Neptune

Sometimes this aspect means that you are so nervously sensitive that you pick up all the negative psychological energies around you and react to them very strongly. If this is true for you, the only way to deal with it is to be moved to a peaceful, positive environment. If there is too much noise or too many bad vibrations in your life, you will withdraw more and more and refuse to face reality.

Jupiter Inconjunct Pluto

You may have a natural talent for dominating others, but don’t fall in love with this talent and be motivated by it. You can be effective at influencing people only if you use your power to help others and yourself achieve desirable goals together. You must be an agent for betterment at all times, and even so you must listen to others’ ideas about betterment to be sure that you aren’t just seeking power in a more roundabout manner.

Conclusion

Many thought JFK blew it when the invasion was called off. But, in hindsight, he was acting more honourably than the CIA and their recruits. When the Cuban Missile Crisis happened in the following year, he was able to stand up to, and stare down, the might of the USSR. Kennedy had learned the lessons of this fiasco well.

(Please note that this video lead-in has a serious flaw: the title year was 1961, not 1962.)

Faith & Science: Do Dogs Think?

20190511_084923

BeBe deep in thought

I guess it’s a fair question. As humans, we think we’re the only ones that are cognitive of our own thoughts. But the question isn’t about cognition, it’s about thinking.

We reason out what path to take, which food to make, everyday. Dogs seem reactive, bouncing along in response to whatever stimuli come their way. But is that all there is to it? We know they feel, and they let us know when something’s not right (like a burglar coming into the house at night, under cover of darkness). BeBe is extra sensitive to smoke alarms. Instantly, she wants to climb my lap to feel protected from that noisy threat. She will also whimper, cry, snap or bark if I accidently hurt her in any way.

But does she think? In a word, ‘yes’!

We play fetch most every evening. But she’s the one who initiates the game. Usually, she stands at the foot of my lounger and stares at me, until I pay attention. I can almost hear her sending me a vibe that says, “Look at me!” On the floor beside her is one of her toys. She doesn’t bring it to me, she expects me to pick it up and throw it across the room. When I finally do what she wants, she fetches it back to me, and then drops it on the floor, as if to say, “Your turn.” This goes on for a short duration, until she tires of the game. Then she jumps on the lounger with me, toy in her mouth, and then lays down.

Cloe - Car ride

Cloe: car ride?

We’ve noticed lately that Cloe, our sightless Jack Russell (now 14 years old), has developed a routine that revolves around being fed, going for a walk, and then sleeping. If we don’t respond to her verbal hints (whines), she starts to use her paw to tap Susan on the arm. Susan then asks her what she wants, goes through a list of what that might be, until Cloe finally responds by jumping off the sofa and going to where she expects her wishes to be fulfilled (kitchen for food, front door for walk, back door for her toilet). When her needs are fulfilled, she goes back to sleep, perhaps to dream (in full vision again). Is that thinking? It seems so.

So: who’s smarter, the humans or the dogs? What do you think?

World One, Me None

none-to-the-world-but-to-me-i-am-the-53295225

I spent what seemed like a very long day

Going from place to place, not knowing why

I went through the hoops to help get away

From this small space known as my cloudy sky.

I lent my mind out to the world outside,

Expecting nothing in return for it;

I bent my purpose so as not to hide,

Deciding something has to soon remit.

I rent this place with you to help us live

Completely within our own meager means;

I dent the market with what I can give,

But am I meant in this business of scenes?

Invent as I may the whys and wherefores,

Am I the one to tell the wise the scores?
