Rural Ontario Detective on CTV

Cardinal

I wasn’t confident that this show would succeed on TV because of its story lines and its rural setting. I was wrong. CTV has renewed the show for two more seasons. That will make four altogether.

This is the opening sequence from the first show which aired in January 2017.

Note the starkness of the snow-covered terrain. It is so real. Not your usual Hallmark Christmas movie, that’s for sure. The second series was set in springtime, called the Black Fly season. No, Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore, we’re in Central Ontario.

I won’t go into the story lines for the first two seasons because I don’t want an R-rating on my posts, but sufficient to say that they demonstrate some very dark deeds in the lives of some very screwed-up individuals.

What I would suggest is that if you have access to the video or online screening of the shows, please watch them, even if it’s only for the beauty of the countryside.

Frankie Drake Mysteries

After the runaway “success” of the Murdock Mysteries the Canadian Broadcast Corporation decided to try to see if lightning could strike twice. These two shows are made by the same production company, Shaftesbury Films, based in Toronto. And therefore it seems only appropriate that both of these shows feature Toronto as it was in earlier times of its history.

Frankie Drake Mysteries is mid-to-late 1920’s “flapper” times. That makes it suitable to show female detectives running around in colourful dresses (and even trousers, on occasion).

The main character, Frankie, whose father named her after Sir Francis Drake, is an adventurer, and her detecting work hints at a life as a female spy in the Great War. Officially, she was a messenger working for the military (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). She is very physical in her actions, and a little gun-shy with her pistol. She is enigmatic, to say the least.

Her cohorts include: Trudy Clarke, a beautiful black woman; Mary Shaw, a morality officer with the Toronto Police (yes, they did have such roles in those days); and Flo Chakowitz, an assistant coroner. They cover the gamut of feminine wiles and wisdom.

Season One was a hoot. Season Two looks a little strained. I don’t think Lauren Lee Smith, who plays Frankie, is enjoying it as much as she previously did. Also her hair is longer, and she appears tired most of the time.

However, it still is a lot of fun, and the introduction of famous people to the show keeps it interesting. Foster Hewitt as a radio announcer was a nice touch, for example.

Whether the show lasts beyond its second season will be interesting to see. If not, it was a great flash in the pan.

Is Trump a Christian?

Trump-Apostles-Creed

Not Reading the Apostles’ Creed

They say one picture is worth a thousand words. This one says about a billion.

His religion is supposedly Presbyterian, from his mother’s side. But he admits to not attending church because of his busy life. Melania is supposedly Roman Catholic. Both Presbyterians and Roman Catholics recite the Apostles’ Creed. It’s an essential statement of their faith in Jesus Christ.

Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
from whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Amen.

Remember the Previous Clue?

“Two Corinthians”

Anyone who has ever gone to church would know that the right way to say it is “Second Corinthians”.

I know, I know: I’m a preacher’s kid, so this is second nature to me, but it made my ears prick up when Trump said that at the beginning of 2016.

“Holy Shit, Batman!”

Conclusion

If anyone in the future needs to look back at this point in Trump’s Presidency and wonder how it fell apart so quickly, they need only visit President George H W Bush’s funeral yesterday to witness the proof of a man who has contempt for everyone, including former Presidents and Christians everywhere.

Water: the Strongest Element?

Water-Cycle-Art2A

Where Would We Be Without It?

Life on Earth owes a huge debt to water. Without it, we wouldn’t exist. And yet, it can be most unforgiving when it’s in its primal condition, liquid.

Have you ever thought about it: its strength, I mean? It can fill the Air with clouds, rain, snow, even ice. And at the same time, it is most useful in stopping Fire in its tracks. And, when it floods, Earth cannot hold it back. Tsunamis can carry away whole villages and everything in them.

But, we need water to survive, since we are about 70% water ourselves. Dehydration can kill us.

Bottled Water

Who was the bright spark that decided to make an industry out of bottling water? As we so require it, how is it even allowed for someone, anyone to control and market drinking water? This is free-market thinking gone horribly wrong.

I know it was 2,000 years ago, but didn’t Jesus say it first?

Then you will become children of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun shine on good and bad people alike, and he sends rain to the righteous and the unrighteous alike. (Matthew 5:45)

The hint is that both the sun and the rain are freely given to everyone, not just a select few who can afford them.

Water Element in Astrology

“The sympathetic, sensitive and often vindictive, emotional Water sign group are frequently represented by the Scorpion, not only because of its ‘sting’ but also for the frequency with which it was anciently supposed to sting itself to death rather than face a ring of fire. It is also symbolized by the serpent — perhaps connotating the ‘wisdom of the serpent’ of the Garden of Eden. In the Roman Sphynx it is represented by the asp on the man’s forehead. Its ‘lone wolf’ proclavities, and the frequency with which strength in Scorpio is reflected in a Roman nose — the eagle’s beak — have been symbolized at some periods of antiquity by the Eagle, as evidenced by the eagle’s wings on the Egyptian Sphynx.”

(Encyclopedia of Astrology by Nicholas de Vore – Philosophical Library, New York 1947)

Conclusion

The three Water signs in Astrology appear to be weak, mainly because of the tears in evidence whenever their natures are affected, but, in truth, they are the strongest of the whole Zodiac: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

You would do well to remember that.
