A Princess, Indeed

Carrie Fisher (1956 – 2016)

All right, now: every single member of my family (including the extended parts) loved Carrie Fisher, especially as Princess Leia in Star Wars. So when she died at age 60, they were heartbroken.

As I seem to be visiting Hollywood actresses astrologically, I thought it was about time to do a review of this fine lady.

FisherCarrieWREJC1

Because Carrie was born to Hollywood royalty, Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, her birth time has been known since the very beginning. So, there is no doubting the accuracy of her birth chart. (Also note the Hollywood searchlights image in the chart.)

And, because I am concentrating on inconjuncts lately, the two in her chart speak volumes about her personality and her struggles.

Mercury Inconjunct Mars

You often find it difficult to separate yourself from what you believe. You fight very hard for your ideas, even when you suspect you are wrong. You must learn that you are not your ideas, that you have them but are not them. If you do not learn this, it will be difficult even to have a friendly talk with friends, because you are always trying to make a point, defend your opinion or prove somebody else wrong. This also makes you irritable and touchy, so that others prefer not to be around you. Of course, you should not give in about something you seriously believe in, but it is unlikely that you would make that mistake.

On the other hand, with this aspect you might find it hard to complain to others, especially if you are not sure that you are right. In that case, you should learn to speak your mind, but without being unpleasant about it. You should learn to release your resentment or anger to a certain extent, because that energy can turn inward and cause you to become nervous, edgy or irritable, which could be quite difficult. Or you could develop unhealthy habits.

If you can learn to control this aspect, you will be able to spend a long time on mental work, as long as you are interested in what you are doing. But you will have to learn when to stop. You may work too hard or get too wrapped up in some idea that you are studying and not be able to relax. Get into the habit of taking a break before you get too overtired.

Pluto Inconjunct Ascendant

This can be an indication that through experiences with others, you will be forced to undergo many significant changes in life. At times the crises may be quite unpleasant, but for the most part the results will be very positive, although for some people, they may be less constructive. But you must be very careful about the kind of people you get involved with. Choose your friends with great care and try to find people who have a healthy outlook on life and who seem reasonably well balanced. People who are driven to extreme behavior or who act compulsively, as if they could not plan anything in advance, are not very good for you. They will get you into difficult situations that you do not need.

Also watch for compulsiveness or extreme behavior yourself. These qualities could be quite hard for others to handle, and people will probably avoid you if you express them freely.

However, you should not avoid people who force you to observe yourself and the world very clearly. Such people will come into your life at times when changes must occur. While you are young, these people might be your parents or a special teacher. You probably will resist their influence, because what they show you will be hard to take, but you must accept it, for they have the highest concern for your well-being.

With your friends, you must learn to give in at least as often as you get your way. Don’t let either you or your friends become dominant. Winning, losing and compromising in equal measure are all part of getting along, which you may find hard.

Coming Home, One Last Time

FisherCarrieWBAGE2

The Ascendant and Midheaven of Carrie’s fatal chart are almost ‘exactly’ conjunct their natal positions. (The slight difference could be due to the time it took to get her to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.) The image of a homecoming is strong.

The fact that her mother should die the very next day seems to reinforce that image.

They were a Hollywood double act, from the very first, to the very end.

Love live a Hollywood queen, long live her royal princess.

The Wizard as Satan in Hell

vlcsnap-2012-12-28-16h22m47s26

“Pay No Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain…”

Isn’t it funny how one image (or thought) leads on to another? Yesterday, I wrote about Judy Garland’s life and death. The image I used was of Judy as Dorothy Gale, from The Wizard of Oz. And just as I was pondering what to write about today, another scene from that film popped into my mind.

My reason for thinking about Satan on his infernal throne was linked to a story told to me by a friend of a near death experience (NDE) he had in his teens. Chuck was a worldly kind of fella, in the sense that his spiritual life was mostly non-existent. But a run-in with a train, while he was crossing the rail tracks in his car, left him close to death.

On the ambulance ride to the closest hospital, he must have died, because the next thing he remembered, later, was floating through the top of the vehicle.

At the time, Chuck’s understanding of heaven and hell was very rudimentary. So, when he found himself facing Satan in hell, the image was one of a hideous being on a fiery throne. That’s the image I went looking for, today, only to think about the Wizard of Oz, instead.

Oz

Wizard-of-Oz-Caps-the-wizard-of-oz-2028567-720-536

The Wizard’s character is fairly benign. In order to keep the Witches of Oz under control, he had to resort to trickery (smoke, flames, giant images of his face). But, when he finally meets Dorothy and her companions, he shows them his softer side. He is the Trickster.

Even now, his effect on children is mixed. At first, they’re deathly afraid of him, but later, they understand what he’s really about. Talk about resolution of fear. When Dorothy gets back to Kansas with Toto, we are reminded that the Magician in the caravan was the basis of the Wizard’s appearance to her in Oz.

Which brings us to the point of this story: the Land of Oz is the afterlife. The clue shows up in the movie Oz the Great and Powerful: those first few frames in colour after the Magician shows up in Oz are powerful reminders that we are mostly deaf, dumb and blind when it comes to beauty on this side of life.

But on the other side of the ‘curtain’ everything will be clearer.

Somewhere, Over the Rainbow

dorothygale

That’s Where You’ll Find Me

I wasn’t going to do the birth chart for this Hollywood Star, until I thought about her ‘accidental’ death in 1969.

So, let’s get the first part out of the way.

June101922

According to this record of birth, Francis Ethel Gumm was born at 6 am on June 10, 1922 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. As the divisions of vital statistics were not interested in recording the exact time of birth, they would round the time up to the nearest hour. A note at the bottom of another birth chart record suggested that a biographer (Gerald Frank) gave her birth time as 5:30 pm. Well, that doesn’t really gibe very well with the birth certificate, but it did give me cause to alter my chart’s birth time to 5:30 am.

GarlandJudyWREJC1

The change effects very little, except it makes a stronger case of her mother (Moon) being in opposition to her birth (Cancer Ascendant)

Your relationship with your mother will have a great deal to do with the kind of person you choose for a lover or marriage partner when you are older. If your relationship with your mother is difficult, or if she seems distant or is simply not around when you need her, when you are older you will look for a partner who will be a “mother” to you. This can be a problem unless you find someone who is willing to be both partner and mother.

And Pluto gets to ‘colour’ her whole life by being in the 1st House.

You are a very intense person who takes almost everything seriously. If an activity isn’t important enough to warrant throwing your whole self into, you feel it isn’t worth doing. You tend to go to extremes, which may make other people uneasy. You have to understand that others are afraid of experiences that you find interesting.

Also, note the Sun Opposition Mars (12th House/6th House axis) dynamic.

Probably you have plenty of courage and confidence in yourself. As long as you can keep from becoming rash and self-centered you will be all right. Others will admire your strength and determination, if not always your sense. Your basic task is to learn to channel this energy, not suppress it. You actually need contests with others to help you find yourself. If you suppress this need and hold the energy down, you will feel a sense of repressed rage that will spring out at the worst possible moments.

The “Accidental” Overdose

GarlandJudyWBAGE2

First of all, no one knows the exact time of Judy Garland’s death. Secondly, the energies of the day, when compared with the birth chart, stay in effect for almost the whole time. Only the Moon will move to any great extent. As her body was found by her fifth husband, in the bathroom, I’m going to assume that her death was in the middle of the night. By doing that, the Fatal Midheaven matches her Natal Moon, and the Fatal Sun matches the Natal Mercury.

We’ve seen another death chart which shows an intentional suicide. That one had some ‘supporting’ energy which carried the person away on a “perfect storm”. This one has far more ‘conflict’, but there are a couple of ‘supporting’ links. So, my instinct is saying that the thought of suicide was there, but not the intention. (According to the police reports, there were pills left over, so that speaks to the idea of an accidental barbiturate poisoning.) Who says Astrology can’t help us understand what really happened?

Conclusion

american-actress-and-singer-judy-garland-walks-with-her-5th-news-photo-1569615420

Judy’s happiness (as shown by this 1969 photograph with her fifth husband, Micky Deans) was short-lived.

She chased the rainbow throughout her whole life, and now she’s a part of the firmament herself.

Rest in Peace, Judy.

The Herald of Free Enterprise Disaster

51UpbyVB-ZL._SX310_BO1,204,203,200_

Cosmic Loom: The New Science of Astrology (1987)

Previously, I have highlighted a few books that have inspired me to write about Astrology. For example, Cosmos and Psyche made sense, for me, of the cycles that seem to run parallel to our lives here on earth. But it was Dennis Elwell‘s book that started me off, all those years ago.

I heard Dennis speak at a lecture at Oxford University in 1987. (It was a weekend retreat only, I didn’t attend there.) He was very enthusiastic about his subject matter, and I found his work to be quite credible.

At one point he referenced a recent ferry accident which had happened the weekend before, saying that the two planets on either side of the Sun in the chart made the Astrologer in him take special notice:

Herald (Mercury) and Free Enterprise (Jupiter). That perked my ears up.

The History

_94921838_gettyimages-51397731

MS Herald of Free Enterprise was a roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ferry which capsized moments after leaving the Belgian port of Zeebrugge on the night of 6 March 1987, killing 193 passengers and crew. (Wikipedia)

(One picture is definitely worth a thousand words.)

The Chart

EnterpriseHeraldofFreeWREJC1

The Human Spirit

The Yod (Finger of God) that dominates this chart involves Neptune, Pluto and the Moon.

Moon Inconjunct Neptune

People with this aspect often hide their real feelings and make sacrifices for others that they do not really want to make. Then they resent the person who asked for the sacrifice. You must learn to tell people how you really feel; if you do not, you have only yourself to blame for what happens. You must learn to accept that you are responsible for your own life. Do not act as if you are the victim of strong forces that you can’t control, because you can control them.

Moon Inconjunct Pluto

This aspect means that your emotions are very intense and not always easy to deal with. Often your feelings make you want to do or say something without knowing why […] If you do not feel accepted and emotionally supported at home, you may constantly feel guilty for what you think you have done to others…

Because Pluto is opposite Mars, the accident has a more cosmic feel to it.

Mars Opposition Pluto

You sometimes find it difficult to get along with others. You may feel picked on, as if people were working against you for no particular reason. However, that is not usually true. But without being aware of it, you may be doing things that set others against you. You are very intense about yourself, and you may give the impression unknowingly that you will do whatever you want and that nothing and no one will stand in your way. This can scare people, even when you have no intention of doing so. And sometimes you do get an idea in your head that you pursue relentlessly. At times you feel that no one has the right to get in your way, and you will fight tooth and nail to overcome any obstacle. You are quite a fighter, and your temper may not always be under control. You need to expend that energy in hard work.

It is becoming quite clear that this accident is the result of human error.

Saturn Conjunct Uranus

This aspect occurs only once every forty-five years; the last time was in 1942. It signifies a heavy internal tension that can have both creative and difficult results. At its most difficult, it may make you feel restless and irritable, not knowing whether to go forward or backward. This in turn creates tension, and you try to get away from whatever is causing the conflict. If this process goes too far, you may suddenly make a rash and impulsive move simply to get away from the tension by any means at all.

Because both Saturn and Uranus are in opposition to the Midheaven, the timing could not have been worse.

Conclusion

I have been writing about the Astrology of historical events since the early 1990’s. None of this is ‘new’ but over the years it has yielded some very interesting results.

I can thank Dennis Elwell for lighting the fire, as it were. Without him, I might never have taken this path.

Judy: Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance?

8179pT6iCwL._SL1200_

No: Gotta Eat, Gotta Sleep

We saw this movie yesterday. I wasn’t sure what to expect, having not read or seen any advance publicity. So, I think it was a bit disappointing to have it focus on the London “Talk of the Town” shows near the end of Judy Garland’s life in 1969.

We all have our cherished memories of Judy’s life in films, and I’m sure that no one has forgotten The Wizard of Oz, so to have a few flashbacks to that time with Louis B Mayer and before, with her working relationship with Mickey Rooney, didn’t hurt this movie. However, in showing the beginnings alongside the ending, the contrast was startling.

Renée Zellweger will no doubt win an Oscar for her portrayal of this gay icon. But I wish they’d put some flesh on those bones. Judy was a lot heavier toward the end of her life. It would have made her character more ‘real’ to me.
