Everything is Relative and Connected

13475432443_d3c042abd5_b

Albert Einstein

One hundred years ago, today, Albert Einstein‘s Theory of General Relativity was confirmed at a joint meeting of the Royal Society of  London and the Royal Astronomical Society. This made Einstein a scientific rock star.

EinsteinAlbertWREJC1

According to Einstein’s birth chart, his ‘stars’ were already in the firmament. Only the Moon and Uranus were below the horizon, but forming aspects to the rest. Shall we look at his inconjuncts? Why not…

Moon Inconjunct Ascendant

This aspect … ties together in you a moon sign and a rising sign that are very different. This indicates that the image you project to other people does not reveal very much about your real feelings. When you are upset, you surprise people by showing a totally different side of your personality. If you read the descriptions of your Ascendant sign and your Moon sign, you will see the difference between these two aspects of yourself.

Because the Ascendant is in Cancer, this reinforces the Moon, which is in Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, which will figure strongly in the proof of his work.

Mercury Inconjunct Uranus

Your mind moves quickly from topic to topic, often without pausing long enough for you to understand what you have learned. And if there is a lot of excitement or activity around you, your mind may race so fast to keep up with it all that you work yourself into a state of nervous frenzy. Under these circumstances it is almost impossible for you to concentrate or do any useful mental work.

As you get older, you will have to learn to discipline your mind so that you can think things through. It’s all right to be somewhat restless, but you must learn to stay put during school and at other times when it is important to concentrate.

On the other hand, you are quite inventive. You can see solutions to problems quicker than most, and you may be good at designing. Model building and other activities that develop your design sense and ability to see in three dimensions would be very useful. Also these exercises would help you learn to concentrate. In school you may excel at mathematics and science, as long as you can learn to sit still long enough to learn the subject.

Saturn Inconjunct Uranus

If either of these planets is near conjunction or opposition with the Ascendant or Midheaven [they aren’t], this aspect indicates a serious tension in your life between freedom and restriction. Many people have this conflict, but in your case the tensions may be so severe that you express them physically as muscle tension and possibly nervousness. You feel that somehow you must keep everything in your life under tight control, that if you let go, the whole structure will fall apart. In a very real and direct sense, even while you are young, you must learn to relax.

On the positive side, if you can learn to live with this tension a bit and express your feelings and emotions before they reach the breaking point, you can be extremely patient and persistent. You will be able to accomplish many tasks that others would give up on, if you do not hold in all your feelings and desires for freedom.

Dennis Elwell noted in his writing that Einstein himself admitted that having a boring job like patent clerk allowed him the mental scope to idle away his time thinking about scientific theories while working.

The Relativity Test Chart

EinsteinrelativitytestWREJC2

The ‘relative’ timing of this test couldn’t have been better: only Uranus is below the horizon and the rest of the planets are in a ‘train’ formation, starting with Mercury and ending with Saturn. Since those planets were involved in Einstein’s natal inconjuncts, the Universe seems to be echoed here.

It is only when you combine his natal chart with this event chart do we see how things connect.

EinsteinAlbertWBAGE2

Remember the position of Einstein’s natal Moon? Now it is in inconjunct aspect to the test’s Jupiter. That would indicate he would become famous in some way. As that Jupiter is conjunct his natal Ascendant, he would become known for this experiment’s results.

The test’s Pluto is also near to the natal horizon, in Einstein’s 12th House, This is a hint at the future nuclear weapon implications of his work. They may seem like unintended consequences, but I suspect that the Universe wanted this knowledge to be shared.

Conclusion

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: there are no ‘accidents’. In the words of Desiderata: “No doubt the Universe is unfolding, as it should…”

Childhood Game: Chinese Whispers

The_gossips_large

Information Sharing or Gossiping?

Are you old enough to remember playing this game as a child? There are variations to it: in the British version, the first person would whisper one word to the next person, and that person would add a word as it was passed down the line. By the time it reached the final person, the sentence was quite complicated.

The American version from my childhood was called “telephone”: the first person would whisper in the second person’s ear a full sentence. That person (after hearing the sentence once) would whisper it on to the next, and so on down the “telephone” line until the last person would say out loud what they’d heard. The result was never the same as the initial sentence, sometimes to great hilarity. (Ellen DeGeneres has a headphone version of it as a game on her daytime television show.)

Anyway, the purpose of the game was to show children how distorted information gets when shared between people.

How can you tell the difference?

When my sisters and I had finally grown up, we used to telephone each other fairly regularly (at least until I moved to England in 1985). During those calls, we would share family news, if we had any, between ourselves. To us it was how families worked.

But our mother didn’t like it. She would admonish us, individually, for gossiping.

What I suspect was our mother’s motivation to stop us from communicating ‘news’ with each other was the fact that any two of us could be going behind another’s back, without their knowledge or permission. She may have wanted to be the one to do the sharing, if and when it was appropriate.

Now, all these years later, we still have reservations about saying anything to each other about any other family members. In other words, we don’t gossip.

“Fake” News

Fake news is a neologism often used to refer to fabricated news. This type of news, found in traditional news, social media or fake news websites, has no basis in fact, but is presented as being factually accurate. (Wikipedia)

The whole world now has a giant “telephone” game: social media.

The intent of “fake” news may be malicious or humourous, but the innocent folk who share it are being used. Not everyone has the time or inclination to research the news items they see on the internet, and funny memes on Facebook. They pass the information on like it really doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. If it says something they’ve been thinking, all the better.

We, who live in the West, think we are championing ‘free’ speech. Everyone has an opinion, and we can agree to disagree. But what if the opinion being shared on the world wide web was intended to further separate us from each other? What if it was meant to start a civil war? Would that make you more careful about what you share?

Reputations can get ruined

A sequence from Anne with an “E” shows how quickly information can spread among a group of teenagers at a dance. The intent may have been malicious, but that’s not how it was portrayed. Billy, after being spurned by Josie, saves face by making a casual comment to one of his friends. In a matter of minutes everyone seems to have heard about it. Anne picks the ‘news’ out of the air and then decides to write an opinion column in the school newspaper about how men control women: “Is that fair?”

The subsequent fallout is devastating to all concerned.

Conclusion

Gossip: it’s a subject that has occupied my mind for a very long time. In fact, I wrote a poem about it, years ago. (But, who pays attention to what I write?)

Even in our Faith & Science group, one member challenged me on a statement I’d made about Catherine McKenna’s graffiti being not a sexual slur but a political one, from someone in the oil patch industry. His words were “Do you have proof?”

And I had to admit that I didn’t.

I guess this means I’m human, after all.

How Europeans United: Fishing Limits?

71PeKmvmilL._SL1500_

Treaty of Rome (January 1, 1958)

In one of his last chapters in Cosmic Loom, Dennis Elwell discusses how the European Union came into being. (At the time he was writing this book, that name didn’t exist.)

RomeTreatyofWREJC1

We have already glimpsed many of the practical outworkings of Saturn-Neptune combinations. This particular pair has been highlighted to show how configurations usually regarded as a liability can be turned to good account. A further illustration may be helpful. In the chart of the European Economic Community (1 January 1958) Saturn is at 19º 26′ Sagittarius and Neptune 4º 26′ Scorpio, a precise semisquare. Given this context we can turn from what this aspect might mean in the abstract, leave aside what it might mean in other contexts, and identify it within the concerns of the Common Market itself. If astrology means anything, one thing this aspect must signify is ‘fishing limits’, both in the sense of restricting fleets to certain waters, and their catch quotas. It must be expected that at times when these issues are to the fore, so will Saturn-Neptune.

Such a well-defined match between the cosmic and terrestrial not only provides a good test-bed for astrology’s methods, but clearly points the way to making it relevant. A full study of the data is instructive, but here we will merely note the following cosmic coincidences. The common fisheries policy came into force on 1 February 1971, when Saturn and Neptune were in symmetrical conjunction with the moon’s node in Aquarius (solidarity). During 1976 a serious row blew up over the policy and on 1 January of the next year a 200-mile fishing zone was declared, when the planets were in trine aspect. But the agreement left much unsettled, and further important negotiations took place in the second half of December 1982, as Jupiter came into symmetrical conjunction with the EEC’s Saturn-Neptune, and a package deal was struck on 21 December when Jupiter was in symmetrical conjunctions with these same planets in the heavens. The policy was endorsed by the Council of Ministers on 25 January 1983 as Saturn reached the degree of Neptune in the EEC chart.

Out of that policy the quotas were agreed in December of that year, and the annual total allowable catches fixed the following month, all this happening under Saturn semisquare Neptune in the heavens — the first semisquare formed between them since the semisquare that accompanied the founding of the EEC. The aspect repeated itself in October, when the issue of fishing controls was raised again because some countries had been exceeding their catches. As Pluto came to the EEC Neptune (and hence semisquare Saturn) the 1985 quotas were agreed, but in circumstances of rumbling discontent which made the British Government consult the House of Commons first. As from 1 April 1985 boats had to log all catches, and we find Saturn in symmetrical conjunction with the EEC Saturn-Neptune.

In this brief case history we have looked at nothing more technical than the ‘real time’ positions of the planets in the sky, in relation to each others or to the EEC birth chart, but more sophisticated techniques like progressions also elaborate this basic configuration, leaving us in no doubt as to its relevance. A quite separate study could be made of the community’s milk lake and butter mountain, taking as a starting point the EEC’s moon (milk and its products) in the bovine Taurus! Again, the rise and fall of solidarity within the community could be examined, using the radical Venus conjunction Chiron in Aquarius as a barometer. And so on. It is a sharply defined context that makes astrology useful in practical matters.

(pages 197-8)

Some other things to notice:

Although the Treaty of Rome was signed in Rome on March 25, 1957, the ‘union’ actually started at the beginning of the following year, and the capital was set in Brussels. The Ascendant is in the last degree of Virgo (which may be why there is so much nitpicking among its member states) and hints at the missed opportunity for harmony (Libra) that would have occurred if they’d enacted the Treaty to start at 2 minutes past midnight. (But I’m guessing that no one consulted an Astrologer.)

And, since I have such a penchant for inconjuncts, the one contained in this chart says, “Look at me, look at me…”

Sun Inconjunct Uranus

There is a side of your personality that is very restless and impatient with rules, even when you know they are for your own good. You want very much to go your own way and do your own thing, even when you aren’t entirely sure that it is the right direction for you. So you rebel in subtle ways by having sudden fits of obstinacy and moods of feeling very contrary, especially to your parents or other authority figures.

Sometimes the energy of this aspect comes out in other ways as well. At times sudden upsets may occur in your life that totally alter your plans, so that you have to change course entirely. When this happens, you must learn to yield to the pressure and flow with the change. It may be difficult for you to realize it, but such an upset occurs because you have blocked much-needed changes in your life, or they have been denied you. However upsetting these changes are at first, they will give you the freedom you need to grow as an individual. Unfortunately, if you always wait for changes to come in this manner, they are likely to be very startling and unsettling. If you learn to assert your individuality more directly, the changes will not seem so upsetting.

Brexit, anyone?

Astrological Seeds?

il_340x270.1142174307_o5f7

Horoscope Packets

In his book, Cosmic Loom, Dennis Elwell sets out a gardening metaphor to help explain what the birth chart is for: in effect, he writes that the horoscope is like the image and description on a packet of seeds.

While nothing could be more valuable than to give the individual a cosmic perspective of his own life, in terms of what he is created to be, he is not expected to jump there in one bound. His role has to be grown into. Fortunately, as well as providing a picture of the ideal to be aimed at, the seed packet that is the horoscope also supplies hints at cultivation.

Before we can fulfil ourselves as individuals our life must possess a certain content. There are prerequisites for our proper development, conditions which promote it if they are present, prevent it if they are absent. Some plants need shade, others sunshine; some a lot of water, some hardly any; one type of soil suits some but not others; and so on. These features belong just as much to the nature of the plant as the shape of its leaves and the colour of its flowers. It is the same with people: they must have the right conditions if they are to flourish, the conditions adapted to their individual nature. Every factor in the horoscope can be interpreted as hints to the gardener!

We can take the well-known characteristics of the signs of the zodiac and turn them into imperatives. Instead of saying that this is what you are like, we can say this is what you ought to be like, this is what you must do, if your abilities and personality are to develop properly. We can thus compile a sort of checklist of requirements against which the person can be measured. (pages 174-5)

This passage reminded me of something I’d written before:

The Seed’s Secret

From “Tales for Jung Folk” by Richards Roberts

When The Wanderer had passed this way again, He strew some seeds over the world to make the world green and to give Him much joy. But He moved quickly on through the universe, and left within each only a small seed of His Own Light.

It was winter on the earth when He passed our way, and Mother Nature was cold and unreceptive to the seeds. Her body was awaiting the great surge of spring, when she stirred in her sleep, shook her loins, and the great cycle of life began again within her.

The seeds lay in a great horde over her body, and on the first day the rains rained all day. “Now,” said the seeds, “we’re soaked through and through. Just right for our beginning.”

On the next day, a cold wind blew out of the north, and some of the seeds began to complain. “We were told that accommodations might not be the best, but this is absurd.” Some of them even began to wish that they had never been strewn.

The third day was no easier. The ground was hardened by the wind, and not a root could be put down.

The rest of the week the rains came back, softening the earth, but driving the seeds deeper and deeper into the ground. Some of them were borne away on rivulets of water. Others bounced from place to place as giant raindrops struck them.

“Ouch,” and “Oouch!” said the seeds as the rain hammered their heads. “If only the sun would come out!” chorused all of them.

“What a beautiful seedling I could be,” said another, “if only I had the right warm soil around me, and just enough sun to start me sprouting.”

“Oh,” said its neighbour, “I don’t ask much. Just a little sun through the clouds and I can manage as well as any.”

But the rains carried on through all of that month and the next. This was impossible to the seeds. Anyone listening who could talk seed-talk would have heard a whole field of complaints,

Except for one! This one seed had been bored at first by all the bad vibrations around him, then genuinely annoyed, and now he knew that if he paid any more attention to them, he would become just like them – a complainer who would never, ever grow.

So what if the rains wouldn’t stop, and the sun hadn’t come out. It was time to do something about it. All the others were waiting for something to happen outside themselves. Maybe nothing ever happened out there. Was there a sun? He had never seen it.

Their Great Legend was that the sun would come again. It had come once before, so the ancestral story went, and when it had, all of “those-who-had-bloomed-before” had burst their jackets and raised their heads to heaven.

Now despair was rampant in the seeds like a fungus, corroding the very spirit of The Wanderer at the centre of their beings.

Except for the one seed. The time had come to do something, and none of the others had thought of that. It had had enough of rain and mud, too. Perhaps the thing to do was to bring the sun out.

Making a mighty effort of will, the seed slowly pushed out a small root. “Lord,” it thought, “this is hard work!”

The other seeds were full of scorn. What good was it to try to amount to anything when the sun wasn’t out. All of them knew the seed would come to a bad end. “Never start anything unless things are just right,” was an old seed law.

Well, the single seed sent its root down, and in just a day it had a firm grip on Mother Earth. Instead of gripping, the other seeds went back to griping. “If only –“ was the prelude to each of their thoughts.

The next day was rich with clouds, as full and fluffy as the cream topping on a shortcake. Not a ray of sun could get through, if there was a sun at all.

But the seed had forgotten now about “out there.” It was engaged in a fierce concentration of all its powers of will and all its collective memory of what it was like to be born. It no longer knew of the other seeds, or the field, or the rain that continued to beat down. Deep within itself, the sun was being centred. The seed was giving birth to the sun.

The next day a green shoot burst abruptly through the roof of the seed, and bore the jacket up above the ground with it.

Just at that moment, above the field the clouds parted and a glorious sun appeared. The rest of the seeds were all dead and could not see it, but it was as beautiful as the Great Legend had said it would be. It wore a gown of golden light, and was crowned with a halo of pure white light.

The seed sent a shiver of warmth blossoming down its length from tip to root, then gathered itself and surged upwards towards the sun. For the seed had learned the Great Secret of the universe, that all along the sun had been shining within.

What About THAT Phone Call?

190920162854-trump-ukraine-president-zelensky-split-exlarge-169

Between Zelensky & Trump

I’ve kept out of the impeachment debate, until now. The US Congress was taken a vote on the legal process against Trump, and has decided to open the investigation to public scrutiny. (In real terms, they are hoping the public will support the process and ‘demand’ that the Republican-controlled Senate vote to remove Donald Trump from office.)

Trump Called it “A Perfect Phone Call”

CallZelenskyPhoneWREJC1

I have noted previously that Trump has a ‘blind spot’ when it comes to his own conduct. Other people don’t see it the same way he does. And neither does the Universe.

The Saturn Conjunct Pluto configuration practically screams, “Oh, no you don’t!” As this is a continuation of the Hong Kong civil disobedience energy, everything coming out now will expose misuses of power to public scrutiny. Mercury is opposed to this conjunction. Mercury represents the Press.

As I tend to focus on inconjuncts these days, there is one and it’s a doozy. It could have been written just for the President of the United States.

Mars Inconjunct Saturn

This can be a difficult aspect because it signifies a conflict between your sense of responsibility and your desire to fulfill your own needs and do what you want. This leads to a struggle within you that may keep you from acting decisively. Instead of deciding what you will do, you feel caught between these two forces, wondering whether you have the right to do what you want. You may feel that others are trying to frustrate you, but it is only your own indecisiveness that is causing the trouble. Sometimes this conflict makes you very irritable and resentful about nothing in particular. Then, when someone happens to act in a way that is obviously annoying, you focus all your built-up anger on that person.

Will it Lead to Impeachment?

TrumpDonaldWBAGE2

When this chart is combined with Donald Trump’s birth chart, an interesting dynamic shows up. (Again, I would ask that you note where the inconjuncts are.)

Trump’s natal Sun is connected to the ‘event’ Pluto. (His ‘true’ nature is being exposed.)

His natal Jupiter is in aspect to the ‘event’ Neptune. (His judgement is clouded.)

His Uranus is linked to the ‘event’ Saturn. (His quick mind is being slowed down.)

And his Neptune is connected to the ‘event’ Moon/Uranus conjunction. (His art of the negotiation — slight of hand — is being forced by circumstances beyond his control.)

These things do not bode well for Trump.

Conclusion

If the Republicans think they can fix this in the Senate, when it comes time to try the case, they have another think coming: this will have a strong effect on the future voting public. No one likes to see ‘corruption’ succeed, and a full blown trial will expose everything that was supposed to stay hidden.

And Trump will probably not want this on his CV… so we shall see…it live on TV.

Who Murdered the Shermans?

1_3786362

Barry and Honey Sherman

Sometime during the evening of December 13, 2017, Mr and Mrs Sherman were killed in their home in Toronto. Their bodies were not found until two days later, when a real estate agent took some potential home buyers into the Shermans’ pool room.

So far, no one has been arrested, but a lot of speculation suggests that their murderer may have been known to them.

Can Astrology give us any clues?

MurderBarryHoneyShermnWREJC1

As the timing is quite speculative, we can only surmise that it happened before midnight. But, even so, apart from the Ascendant and Midheaven, the planets indicate quite strongly that it was someone in the family. (And there were no signs of forced entry…)

Since Uranus is so prominent in this ‘death’ chart, I feel that the act itself was effectively unpremeditated, ‘spur-of-the-moment’. Mars in opposition to Uranus shows that it may have been due to a temper tantrum of some sort. Obviously, money could have been a huge motivating factor. And the Sun/Mercury conjunction implies someone who is ‘related’ to the Shermans, but may or may not be one of their children. (I’m going out on a limb here:) The recent legal battles with some cousins may be the real reason.

Neptune tends to cloud the picture. The trine between that planet and the Moon/Jupiter conjunction implies that no one wants to ‘rat’ out a family member, hence the reason no one has been brought to justice yet. Venus square Neptune reinforces this feeling.

But let’s say for argument’s sake, the timing may be accurate as there are two inconjuncts pointing at the Midheaven, and those planets make up the same Sun/Mercury conjunction, mentioned above. When I look at the details of these inconjuncts, something becomes clearer.

Sun Inconjunct Midheaven

This aspect can mean some tension with one of your parents, although it is not likely to be serious or destructive. In fact it may play a very positive role later on by forcing you to confront certain issues that you would otherwise have ignored. However, while you are young, you may resent this parent quite a bit. Do not take this too seriously, unless some other area of your chart indicates a more negative relationship.

Mercury Inconjunct Midheaven

Recognize this tension within yourself and try to accept the fact that it exists. [That is, making indiscreet remarks that totally get in the way of your objectives.] At the same time you should look for ways to resolve by learning how to think what you want to think and still accomplish your objectives. Just make sure as you get older that you set your own objectives rather than fulfilling other people’s expectations for you. Otherwise the problem of tension could get worse and you could wind up very confused.

It is very important that you remember not to speak impulsively. If you do, it is very likely that you will put your foot in your mouth. Consider what you are going to say and how your words can further your objectives.

Conclusion

At the funeral, Jonathon Sherman, their one and only son, said something strangely ‘foot-in-the-mouth’ (as stated in a Maclean’s story, yesterday…):

Q: You also quote what you call an “eye-brow raising” comment Jonathon made at the funeral about his parents: that he and his siblings were glad “neither of you had to suffer like we are suffering now.” You saw that as worth noting?

A: I think so. Only Jonathon spoke for the family. You can tell it’s been a tough couple of days. You also can read between the lines about some of the comments he made, including mention of his mother falling when skiing, and see the relationship isn’t so great with his mother.

Together with the fact that Honey had bruising on her face, and Barry did not, it seems to suggest that one of them was liked more than the other.

I rest my case, M’lord.

Is There a Cosmic Will?

75077925_10156312536572352_6677868546854223872_n

Dennis Elwell (16 Feb 1930 – 13 Nov 2014)

If, astrologically, behind each planet and sign can be traced a recognisable will or intent, it argues that the universe itself, considered as a single entity, must have its own overriding will or intent; for the reason that the parts can do no other than reflect what already exists in the whole. What we discover in the nature of each planetary holon singly, instructs us as to the nature of the system in which they are organically embedded, We arrive at a view of the universe as a self-directing, self-aware system, embracing all levels of being.

Indeed, if we humans, as part of the total system, are able to will, able to decide, resolve, conceive goals and work towards them, it suggests that the cosmos itself possesses the same faculty or something like it, again because within an interrelated system — which physics implies the universe to be — nothing can arise that in some sense is not already present in the whole. Any organism on earth that is capable of purposeful action has not summoned up that capacity unaided out of its own resources.

The conclusions that will and consciousness must be attributes of the universe as a whole if they are found in human beings, came through with especial force in the older conception of man, in which he, more than any other creature, was a universe in miniature, and the universe an enlarged man.

Cosmic Loom (page 119)

This is precisely how I imagined the Universe when I was still quite young.
