Female Hero in Male Dominated Worlds

Rogue One

Do you think it was an accident or coincidental that this movie came out shortly after Donald Trump was elected President? In my world, there are no accidents…

Today is International Women’s Day: my youngest grandchild is staying with us overnight; she wanted to watch something. She chose this movie.

I think she relates to the girl whose story this is. I think everyone can.

Jyn Erso

It’s a clever name, Jyn:

Jinn (also known as Djinn or Genies) are supernatural creatures. They appear to come from someplace ‘hidden’ to help whomever frees them from their prison. (See Aladdin for an example.)

In this Star Wars story, Jyn was left for dead after her scientist father was ‘persuaded’ to help the Imperial forces build a Death Star. It was he who built a flaw in that Death Star which was exploited by the Rebel Alliance in the very first Star Wars episode known as IV: A New Hope. (All epic stories ‘start’ in the middle of the story.) She is the reason that the Rebel Alliance got the Death Star plans after her father was killed.

Sacrifice

Whereas, most Star Wars heroes live long lives, Jyn died along with the rest of her Rogue One crew. This is unusual. But, I suspect, the producers didn’t want characters from the intervening years to clog up the Star Wars universe.

The sight of Jyn and Cassian facing the destructive forces of the Death Star is the epitome of bravery.

It is also an echo of the final scene from Pompeii. Just sayin’…

Autism as Political Football

Autism Spectrum Disorder

This will not primarily be a medical post. The political overtones and undercurrent of the governing Progressive Conservatives in the Ontario Legislature recent decision to clear the backlog of parents seeking help for their children suffering from autism has created a maelstrom of protest. Did you know that 1 in 66 children have autism? That’s a lot of people needing help.

autism

The science about why these children have autism is unclear. For years, there have been persistent rumours (even promoted by Trump in 2016) that autism is caused by vaccines for Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR), so a lot of parents have opted out. Now we’re seeing a resurgence of measles in provinces where there is most resistance to automatic vaccinations. In Ontario, it is the law that children attending school have to have their shots up-to-date.

But What is Autism?

Autism

As young as 18 months, a child can show signs of intellectual disability, but normally these are not diagnosed until the ages of 2 to 3 years. If the parents can afford the very expensive therapies, the child will be able to integrate into ‘normal’ life as an adult.

Savants

Through movies and television, we have been shown individuals who have autism, but who also are exceptional in some specific skills.

Rain Man is the story of Raymond, the older brother of Charlie Babbitt, a go-getting hustler who gets stuck with him on a cross-country road trip. Along the way, Charlie discovers that Raymond has an unusual ability with numbers. So, of course, they have to visit Vegas. It seems that Raymond can ‘count’ cards in Blackjack.

irmaos

Charlie finally understands that his lifestyle does not suit Raymond’s need for routine and security, so he takes Raymond back to the institution he has known as home for most of his life.

The Good Doctor is the story of a different sort of savant: he has the ability to view the inner workings of the body in three dimensional graphics. So, of course, he becomes a surgeon. But his bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired.

Conclusion

Is there something going on? One in sixty-six children in Canada have autism. And the numbers are increasing all the time. Has someone been messing with the water?

Although it’s an uncomfortable thought, Autism Spectrum Disorder seems to be making a new species of human before our very eyes. And the disassociation that comes from people connecting on the internet, at the expense of face-to-face communication, makes use all a little more robotic-like every day. “Resistance is futile.”

Lots of If’s, And’s and Butts

jdt101534000-jpg

Gerry Butts

Former Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is testifying to the Justice Committee. His version of events leading to the SNC-Lavalin crisis will obviously be at odds with Jody Wilson-Raybould’s. In his opinion, the Attorney General’s decision on whether to interfere with the court case would not be a once-and-for-all-time one, because something could come up during the trial which might need mitigating. In other words, she could have waited until just before the sentencing to step in. Hence the “pressure” being brought to bear on her and the Justice department.

If someone ‘accidentally’ mentioned a provincial or federal election, that would have been unfortunate, because the intention was to ‘help’ SNC-Lavalin avoid losing work, and ‘middle class’ jobs, for Quebec.

The Demotion?

From the government’s point-of-view, shifting JWR from the Justice department to another portfolio was only because of the unexpected resignation of a cabinet minister. A reshuffle had to take place, so Trudeau decided which ones were going to be moved ‘sideways’. His mistake was thinking that he could solve all of his SNC-Lavalin problems by finding a new Attorney General. His second mistake was thinking that was a reasonable move.

Now he has a problem of ‘optics’: is Trudeau a leader of men (and women), or is he just a coward who hides behind his minions? You decide…

The Political Meme: Irony or Sarcasm?

Justin and Ivanka

While researching political memes, I found this gem of a photograph which shows a subtle reason why Justin Trudeau is in power, as Prime Minister of Canada.

He is one of the very few politicians in the world that could be considered handsome.

While he was helping Ivanka Trump with her chair, the women in the room seemed to take great delight in his presence.

No words need be said.

HTTYD: The Hidden World’s Villain

Grimmell

Animators have a lot of leeway when it comes to creating their characters. Take Grimmell, for instance, in the latest How To Train Your Dragon instalment. He spoke in a somewhat foreign accent, like Spanish (I thought). His character put me in mind of Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva in Skyfall.

But it turns out the voice for Grimmell is actually F. Murray Abraham (of Amadeus fame).

How To Train Your Dragon (Energy)

The Hidden World

I haven’t seen the previous two movies, but our youngest grandchild wanted to see it, so we went to the cinema yesterday.

As luck (?) would have it, Avatar was on the television the night before. Synchronicity is always fascinating. The so-called hidden world in yesterday’s movie is very reminiscent to the Na’vi world. Especially the ‘black’ light luminescence.

So, the question has to be asked: is this movie a homage to the earlier one? I think so.

Let’s Drop a Little…

joy-movie-poster

Joy (2015)

It’s hard to believe that this little gem of a movie is three years old. They had it on TV the other night. It still makes me cry (well, that’s not really too difficult, as I feel great empathy for a great many things). And Jennifer Lawrence was perfect for the lead role.

What made this significant was the fact that one day later, Bradley Cooper suggested to Lady Gaga after their rehearsal of “Shallow” (her song from “A Star Is Born“) for the Oscars show that perhaps they could ‘drop a little bit of joy’ into their performance, I immediately thought of this movie that he starred in with Lawrence.

And if ever there was an actor with the ‘golden’ touch, it’s Bradley Cooper. Well done, sir.

Oceanic Flight 815

MV5BNzhlY2E5NDUtYjJjYy00ODg3LWFkZWQtYTVmMzU4ZWZmOWJkXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNTA4NzY1MzY@._V1_

“Lost”: the Plot

When this television series started in 2004, everyone speculated that the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 had actually died and their time on the Island was the afterlife.

It took six seasons to tell the full tale, but some of the plot twists seemed to remain complete mysteries. A lot of viewers also stopped watching when things became too convoluted with time travel episodes (‘flash-backs’ and ‘flash-forwards’). It almost seemed that JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot team had lost the plot.

Then came the final season, the one regarded as the ‘flash-sideways’. The same characters were there but now in an alternate version of reality. Only one of them, Desmond, was aware of what had happened to them, and he spent all his time trying to wake the others up. By the end, he’d mostly succeeded.

Purgatory?

In the Roman Catholic version of the afterlife, there is a holding area where the souls of the dead gather before they go to their final destinations. It is here they shake off the effects of the lives they have just left, and where they have time to ponder the roles they had previously lived.

In today’s world, this is better understood as Reincarnation. Without any conscious memory of whatever lives one has lived, the individual goes through the same process (again and again) to see if anything had been learned of those experiences. First knowledge and then wisdom.

No matter what has happened in the past, there is always something in the future: as in, “whatever happens.”

Conclusion

The fairy tales of our childhood spoke of ‘happily ever after’. This modern (and adult) fairy tale shows us that nothing really ends. And if, like Ben Linus, you don’t choose to enter the Church to continue on to the next phase, that’s okay, too. The choice is always our own to make.

At least, at some level, we will not stay “Lost” forever.

Corporate Corruption in Canada

1209 biz attic bombardier

Too Big to Fall?

For the little guy on the street, some companies have a lot of nerve. First they behave with little regard for the Rule of Law, and then, when they get caught, they use the threat of moving out of the country to bring the Government to its knees.

I say, “Don’t do the crime, unless you’re willing to do the time.”

The fear of job losses, financial ruin for Canada is a hoax. SNC-Lavalin will continue to operate even after they can no longer bid for work from the Government. But will they thrive? Who knows???

They have done this to themselves. And the rest of Canada will not give them a ‘hall pass’.
