When Bonnie Met Clyde, a Legend was Reborn

Bonnie Parker (1910-1934) and Clyde Barrow (1909-1934)

I must confess to a certain fascination for this couple. Although I have no intention of glamorizing violence, they do seem like Robin Hood and Maid Marian reborn into the 20th century. Their “love” story has been brought back into focus by the film “The Highwaymen”, which I watched on Netflix last night.

Here’s the birth chart of Bonnie Parker:

The timing is randomized. Scorpio Rising seems appropriate. And all her unrealized potential is shown in the double stellium of the Moon, Mercury and Venus in Virgo, and the Sun, Mars and Jupiter in Libra (11th and 12th Houses respectively). That Sun/Mars conjunction could account for her temper, both inconjunct to Saturn (her feeling of being suffocated by life). The other inconjunct connects Uranus in Capricorn with the Midheaven in Leo. This girl was itching to break free.

Here’s Clyde Barrow’s birth chart:

All the astrological sites list his birth time as 10:55 am. Why? Because Pluto is then conjunct his Gemini Ascendant. Instead, I have rectified his chart to show the timing of getting into trouble with the law, and his subsequent change in behaviour, Sun/Saturn. Like Bonnie, Clyde’s Pluto should be in the 8th House of Death. This places the Moon at about 25 years of age. The ‘accidental’ Yod pointing at the Midheaven is supported by Venus in Pisces and Uranus in Capricorn. Note that Mars is conjunct to Uranus. The other inconjunct connects the Sun and Jupiter.

Here are their combined charts:

Well, that was unexpected! The resulting conjunction between their Ascendants shows that they were destined to find themselves in each other’s lives. If accurate, they both lived during the 14th century. Hmm. The Robin and Marian connection, perhaps? (Do you see how I get hints long before I find my ‘proof’?)

And their joint Yod involves Clyde’s Pluto and Midheaven being inconjunct to Bonnie’s Uranus. Because Clyde’s Mars/Uranus conjunction is in the same place as Bonnie’s Uranus, this is powerful, indeed. (And their Plutos and Midheavens are also conjunct.)

Here’s their joint death chart:

The long arm of the law is demonstrated by Saturn @ 28 Aquarius being inconjunct to the ‘event’ Ascendant @ 28 Cancer. Pluto (the Destroyer) is within 5 degrees of the Ascendant. They were never going to be taken alive.

Bonnie Gets the Last Word:

The Story of Bonnie and Clyde

You’ve read the story of Jesse James
Of how he lived and died;
If you’re still in need
Of something to read,
Here’s the story of Bonnie and Clyde.

Now Bonnie and Clyde are the Barrow gang,
I’m sure you all have read
How they rob and steal
And those who squeal
Are usually found dying or dead.

There’s lots of untruths to these write-ups;
They’re not so ruthless as that;
Their nature is raw;
They hate all the law
The stool pigeons, spotters, and rats.

They call them cold-blooded killers;
They say they are heartless and mean;
But I say this with pride,
That I once knew Clyde
When he was honest and upright and clean.

But the laws fooled around,
Kept taking him down
And locking him up in a cell,
Till he said to me,
“I’ll never be free,
So I’ll meet a few of them in hell.”

The road was so dimly lighted;
There were no highway signs to guide;
But they made up their minds
If all roads were blind,
They wouldn’t give up till they died.

The road gets dimmer and dimmer;
Sometimes you can hardly see;
But it’s fight, man to man,
And do all you can,
For they know they can never be free.

From heart-break some people have suffered;
From weariness some people have died;
But take it all in all,
Our troubles are small
Till we get like Bonnie and Clyde.

If a policeman is killed in Dallas,
And they have no clue or guide;
If they can’t find a fiend,
They just wipe their slate clean
And hand it on Bonnie and Clyde.

There’s two crimes committed in America
Not accredited to the Barrow mob;
They had no hand
In the kidnap demand,
Nor the Kansas City depot job.

A newsboy once said to his buddy;
“I wish old Clyde would get jumped;
In these awful hard times
We’d make a few dimes
If five or six cops would get bumped.”

The police haven’t got the report yet,
But Clyde called me up today;
He said, “Don’t start any fights
We aren’t working nights
We’re joining the NRA.”

From Irving to West Dallas viaduct
Is known as the Great Divide,
Where the women are kin,
And the men are men,
And they won’t “stool” on Bonnie and Clyde.

If they try to act like citizens
And rent them a nice little flat,
About the third night
They’re invited to fight
By a sub-gun’s rat-tat-tat.

They don’t think they’re too tough or desperate,
They know that the law always wins;
They’ve been shot at before,
But they do not ignore
That death is the wages of sin.

Some day they’ll go down together;
And they’ll bury them side by side;
To few it’ll be grief
To the law a relief
But it’s death for Bonnie and Clyde.

The Man Behind the Villains We Love to Hate

Image courtesy of Biography

Alan Rickman (February 21, 1946 – January 14, 2016)

There is no direct route of my thinking that brought me to this post. While reading Hello From Heaven, I thought back to the film “Truly, Madly, Deeply” from 1990. In it, Alan Rickman plays Jamie, a deceased musician, who comes back from the Other Side to comfort his girlfriend, Nina, played by Juliet Stevenson:

Obviously, Alan isn’t the villain of the film, but it reminds us of how versatile he is as an actor. And how much we miss him, since his death in 2016 (five weeks before his 70th birthday).

Every astrological site states that Alan Rickman’s birth time is unknown, so they choose either dawn or midday. What’s wrong with good old-fashioned chart rectification?

Alan Rickman met his future partner and (later) wife, Rima Horton, when he was 19 years old. So I set the dial for Venus to that age, and the result is a birth time of 6:45 pm. There, that wasn’t so difficult, was it?

The way the planets then line up makes for an interesting ‘man behind the mask’ scenario. Pluto is in Leo in the 11th House (of Groups and Associations) and Juliet Stevenson says that Alan was like the steering wheel of their acting group. Neptune (which I associate with all actors and actresses) is in the final degrees of his 1st House (of Personality). The planet was in Libra (Balance and Relationships). Those two planets are both inconjunct Venus in Pisces, forming a Yod (Finger of God).

His ‘wife’ was his ‘life’.

The Uranus/Midheaven conjunction in Gemini probably gave him the ability to play both the hero and the villain in his chosen profession. He always brought a sense of spiritual menace to his roles. And his motivation for excellence didn’t come from the glory of winning an award for his acting ability: I believe it came from the perfection of the Mars/Saturn conjunction in Cancer in the 10th House (of Occupation).

Death Chart

The precise time of Rickman’s death is not known, so I set the time for when the press released a statement about it. Time’s report was @ 8:07 am EST (so I added 5 hours for GMT). The Guardian‘s report was @ 14:07 GMT. Hmm. Same minute, but one hour difference. I’m sticking with 1:07 GMT. (In truth it could be up to 12 hours earlier.)

Saturn, the Grim Reaper, had just crossed his Descendant line of the ‘death’ chart. I’ll consider that a hit. But we cannot know the overall effect until we combined the charts.

Lots of connections here: natal Pluto conjunct ‘fatal’ Part of Fortune; natal Moon conjunct ‘fatal’ Mars; natal Venus conjunct ‘fatal’ Neptune; natal Uranus/Midheaven conjunct ‘fatal’ Ascendant, opposite ‘fatal’ Saturn. Now the Yod (from his natal Neptune and Pluto inconjuncts) is pointing at his ‘fatal’ Neptune. (It has been stated that he didn’t realize how quickly his pancreatic cancer could kill him.)

The Last Words are Alan’s

Obviously, Someone Didn’t Get the Memo

Image courtesy of Barrie360 (Sep 20/2020)

This image was taken more than a week ago. In the meantime, Simcoe-Muskoka Catholic District School Board has mandated that their students will no longer have an option to leave the school for lunch. In fact, they have to eat lunch in their classrooms.

Great, now they’re being locked up for the whole day!

We live just up the street from Saint Theresa’s Catholic High School in Midland, Ontario. I usually walk our dogs during the lunch hour. This means that we sometimes pass that area, so I take note of what is going on, in and around the school. Students are still congregating at the entrance, but instead of just hanging around, they’re going for a walk around the block(s) in groups of ten or so. But most of them are not wearing masks, which isn’t surprising, considering the regimentation of classroom life, these days. Most of the time, I have to leave the sidewalk to these students, because they won’t move over for us. And as they are obviously in a ‘pod’, they keep to themselves. (Some even have a teacher with them, but the teacher isn’t wearing a mask, either.)

So much for staying at school, eh?

My reason for writing this post is not to condemn the students, nor the school board, but to point out what is plainly obvious to everyone: society likes to think that teenagers can be made to obey the rules, but the reality is quite different. For one thing, death to a teenager is a very distant event. It isn’t going to happen to them for a long, long time. And the other thing? It’s a drag to have to wear a mask all the time.

Anything else? They are bored of the whole pandemic thing: “Let’s change the channel.”

Alone, Again, Naturally

Enola Holmes (2020)

It’s been quite a long time since I’ve seen a film within the first week of its release. This one is about the sixteen-year-old younger sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes in 1884. (The actress playing her part is Millie Bobby Brown, who is also 16. She’s been playing Eleven on “Stranger Things” and has earned a Primetime Emmy nomination as the outstanding supporting actress for that series.)

The Plot (from Wikipedia)

Enola Holmes is the youngest sibling and only daughter in the famous Holmes family. She is extremely intelligent, observant, and insightful, and defies the social norms for women of the time. Her father died when she was very little and her two older brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock, left home shortly after so neither of them have really met Enola. Nevertheless, her beloved mother, Eudoria, has taught her everything from chess to jujitsu and encouraged her to be a strong-willed, and independent thinking young woman.

On the day of her sixteenth birthday, Enola awakens to find her mother has disappeared, leaving behind only some birthday gifts. Enola meets her brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock, who fail to recognize her at first, not having seen her in many years. Sherlock finds her to be an intelligent girl, whereas Mycroft finds her troublesome and wild. As her legal guardian, Mycroft intends to send her away to a finishing school run by the stern Miss Harrison. The flowers left by her mother reveal secret messages and lead to hidden money, which Enola uses to escape disguised as a boy. On the train, she finds the young Viscount Tewkesbury hidden in a travel bag. She thinks he is a nincompoop but warns him that a man in a brown bowler hat (named Linthorn) is on the train, searching for him. They jump off the train to escape. Having no food Tewkesbury forages for edible plants. They travel to London, where they part ways.

Disguised as a proper Victorian lady, she continues to trace Eudoria and leaves cryptic messages in the newspaper personal advertisements. Enola discovers pamphlets and a safehouse containing explosives and learns that Eudoria is part of a radical group of suffragettes. She is attacked by Linthorn, who tortures her for information about Tewkesbury, attempting to drown her. They fight but she is able to ignite the explosives and escape. Enola decides to pause the search for her mother and instead find Tewkesbury again to save him, because he is not capable of defending himself. Enola visits the Tewkesbury estate at Basilwether Hall to learn more. Mycroft has Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard search for Enola.

Enola finds Tewkesbury selling flowers in Covent Garden and warns him of the danger. She helps him escape, but is caught by Lestrade and imprisoned in Miss Harrison’s finishing school by Mycroft. Sherlock visits her and admits he is impressed by her detective work. Tewkesbury sneaks into the school, and they escape together, stealing Miss Harrison’s motor car. They reach a fork in the road and, rather than returning to London, Enola decides they must go to Basilwether Hall and face his uncle, who she has deduced was trying to kill him. The estate is seemingly deserted, Linthorn ambushes them, firing a shotgun. Enola trips him using a jujitsu move, causing a fatal head injury. Tewkesbury’s grandmother is revealed as the real villain; a traditionalist, she did not want him to take his father’s place in the House of Lords and vote for the Reform Bill. She shoots Tewkesbury and Enola is heartbroken when she thinks he’s dead but he reveals he is wearing a bullet proof vest. Sherlock arrives at Scotland Yard, and Lestrade asks him two questions: firstly how he managed to solve the case, and secondly how his sister solved it first.

Enola deciphers a message she finds in the newspaper, but deduces it was not sent by her mother. At the meeting point, Sherlock and Mycroft discuss Enola and Sherlock suggests he might become her guardian. As they are about to give up and leave Sherlock notices an old toy Enola has left as a clue, and chooses not to look for her. All the while Enola has been watching disguised as a newsboy. Returning to her lodgings, Enola finds her mother waiting. They embrace, and Eudoria explains why she had to leave, and why she must leave again, but she expresses how impressed she is at what Enola has become. Enola has found her freedom and her purpose — she is a detective and a finder of lost souls.

And after you’ve watched this wonderful two hour film, may I suggest that you read this post by the Den of Geek. It will explain anything you might still need to know.

Bestselling Women: 19th and 20th Centuries

Jane Austen and Shirley MacLaine

Oh, this is one that came at me from left field. What if Shirley MacLaine is Jane Austen reborn? Now, think about it… Doesn’t that make perfect sense?

I know, I know: both charts are ‘rectified’ so can we trust anything they tell us? Well, yes, in a word. It’s the North Node/South Node flip between the two charts that signaled their connection to me. (And the astrologers out there that do this kind of work will agree, I’m sure.) Shirley’s Ascendant in Virgo is conjunct Jane’s Neptune. And that Neptune is the apex of a Yod supported by Shirley’s Saturn and Uranus. Jane’s Sun is inconjunct Shirley’s Pluto, and Jane’s Mercury is inconjunct Shirley’s Sun. It all fits.

But before someone wants to burn me at the stake for such heresy, please remember that there may have been intervening lives which would have showed a progression of personality over time, from the introverted commentator of Regency morals and behaviour to the extroverted spokesperson of New Age beliefs. Everyone changes in time. Nothing stays the same.

Heaven and…Hell-o!

Hello from Heaven! (1995)

Have you ever had a spontaneous encounter with the other side? They’re being called after-death communications (ADC) in order to differentiate them from near death experiences (NDE) and medium messages. They are not because someone is in deep mourning or specifically missing a loved after death: they could happen when you’re doing something else, or even just after a person dies before the news has reached you in the normal way. Their purpose is to let you know that the person is alright and there’s no need to feel bad. The sense that most feel is one of comfort and peace.

Now Hugh Downs is on the other side, so I wonder if this is his way of saying ‘Hello!’

What does ‘Hello!’ actually mean?

Well, I’m glad you asked me that. Here’s what Wikipedia says:

‘According to the Oxford English Dictionary, hello is an alteration of hallo, hollo, which came from Old High German “halâ, holâ, emphatic imperative of halôn, holôn to fetch, used especially in hailing a ferryman“. It also connects the development of hello to the influence of an earlier form, holla, whose origin is in the French holà (roughly, ‘whoa there!’, from French là ‘there’). As in addition to hello, halloo, hallo, hollo, hullo and (rarely) hillo also exist as variants or related words, the word can be spelt using any of all five vowels.’

There, is that any clearer? The ferryman may actually be Charon. Now that’s special…

In our household, when someone comes through the door, either the person entering, or the person already there, says “Hello!” That prompts our dogs to start barking loudly. Perhaps it the ‘Halloo’ used by hunters that sets their hounds off that our dogs know instinctively. These days we’re more likely to yell, “Yoohoo!” (You Who!)

Conclusion

I’m not being facetious here: I’ve had many examples of spontaneous contact from my parents, as evidenced on these pages. And since, in 1995, a poll suggested that 50 million people (20% of the American population) have, too, I’m in very good company.

Was Fanny Price Jane Austen’s Stand-in?

Mansfield Park (1999)

It’s common knowledge that Jane Austen lived her life vicariously through the heroines of her stories. That’s to be expected, of course: they gave her a voice on the world stage.

But there’s something about Fanny Price‘s life that lends extra credence to this idea.

This post is the product of a restless night after watching Mansfield Park last night:

(That look that the actress gave the camera after Edmund kisses Fanny was what did it.)

It got me to thinking about Jane Austen’s life, and especially her birth chart.

Every single astrological site online lists Jane’s birth time as 11:45 pm. I wonder why? By rectifying the chart to show her death (Mars) to have occurred at 41 years of age, I get 3:30 pm, with her Ascendant in Gemini, conjunct Jupiter (in the 12th House). As she was always in two minds about the men in her heroines’ lives, this seems quite fitting.

The only inconjunct is therefore highlighting the Ascendant and Mars (in Capricorn):

Mars Inconjunct Ascendant

The difficulty with this aspect is to find a balance between getting what you want in life and getting along with others. More than most people, you will have to learn the necessity of compromising to get along with people, especially because you often seem more aggressive than you are. While you are young, the need to compromise may be frustrating, because youth is a time when your own needs seem especially urgent and demanding. At times you may feel that nothing is going your way, that you continually have to give in to others and put your wishes aside. However, it is not really this bad. You do not have to compromise any more than anyone else, but you are more reluctant to do so.

It may be telling but Jane’s niece used to ask her for advice. The niece’s name? Fanny.

Venetians and Turks Were Fighting in Athens in 1687

Destruction of the Parthenon on September 26, 1687

Neither side should be very proud of their accomplishment. The Turks used the Parthenon as a storage depot for their munitions. The Venetians took advantage of a deserter’s warning. As a result, the West partially lost a symbol of Greece’s glorious past. What a shame!

Would you like to see what energies were operating that day?

As the timing of this chart is randomized, I can only be sure of the Yod pointing at Uranus, supported by inconjuncts to Jupiter and Saturn. This is a battle among the ancient Greek Gods for supremacy. The Sun and the Moon are conjunct with Saturn, and Pluto is trine with Venus which opposes Uranus. Mars is trine the Sun/Moon/Saturn connection, and square Pluto. Even Mercury is sextile Venus. Only Neptune is un-aspected by any planets, but may be conjunct the Pisces Ascendant/Part of Fortune combination. What would Zeus have said? Oops?

Here’s an engraving from Wikipedia that is a copy of the first photograph of the Parthenon taken by Pierre-Gustave Joly de Lotbinière in October 1839. This is a bit of synchronicity for me, as I researched this man’s family tree decades ago.

It truly is a small world after all!
