The Upside Down Kingdom

The Last Shall Be First and the First Last

This saying of Jesus is repeated a few times in the Gospels, but do we really understand what he was saying?

In Mark chapter 9, a dispute is going on among the disciples as to who would be the greatest of them.

Verse 35: And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith to them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

Jesus then goes on to discuss what that service would entail. This is echoed in Matthew 25:31-46.

Christians Believe They Are Special in God’s Sight

But the Scriptures point out in many different ways that being a nominal Christian is not a spiritual advantage. Jesus is saying that belief is not enough, there must be action, too.

In fact, the verse indicated at the beginning of this post is actually the ending of his teaching lesson that Jesus gives about ranking within his disciples. It can be seen as speaking to the rest of his followers, too, even unto the present time.

So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.

This story can be found in Matthew, chapter 20. It describes a situation where labourers are needed for the harvest, and the ones hired at the beginning complain when late arrivals are paid exactly the same wages as they are. The lord of the vineyard says that every person he hired agreed to be paid the same wage, no matter how little or how much they did. Implied: their reward in heaven will be the same.

wheat2

This hearkens back to the Prodigal Son story. The brother that had always been with his father resented that his wastrel brother was treated so royally when he returned home. It is as if being faithful for so long should earn a better reward. It doesn’t work that way.

Eternal life is guaranteed for all. There is nothing greater than eternity.

A Little Lost Glove on the Pavement

DSCN2174

Putting Away Childhood Things

As far as images go, this one of the lost glove seemed to touch a nerve with me this morning, when I came across it while walking one of our dogs.

By itself, it has no specific meaning or memory, but when coupled with the feeling of sadness and loss, it becomes a symbol of my childhood.

It’s the second day of autumn here in Canada. This time of year always fills me with nostalgia. I suppose most of that nostalgia springs from the years that I spent in Windermere, Muskoka. Autumn there was always filled with beautiful leaves painting the scenery like a watercolour. But then the leaves fall to the ground, awaiting the first snows of winter.

My immediate thought, when I saw this glove, was that the child who lost it wouldn’t even recognize it as his own, should he happen to pass this way again. That’s what this insight means to me. Will I, too, forget my life, once I’m dead and gone?

And, just so we don’t get too maudlin over one lost little glove, its companion was just 10 metres away, also lost on the pavement.

You can tell I’m getting old, can’t you?

A Climate for Change

https _cdn.cnn.com_cnnnext_dam_assets_190920160018-global-climate-strike

United We Stand, Divided We Fall

There’s going to be a Global Climate Strike!

To us older generations, this is confusing. We thought we only protested war, racial injustice and political fraud. Oh, and the whaling industry. We mustn’t forget them: Jacques Cousteau and the Calypso ship.

You see, we believe that there is nothing new under the sun, and that everything that went before will come ’round again. Climate change is different. But is it, really?

Young People have Seen Where This is Going

My second wife, Suzann, was an environmental activist in the 80’s. She was the local coordinator of Friends of the Earth (FoE) in Torquay, UK. She wanted to help clean up the earth, starting in our own backyard. (She also joined Fountain International, and invited me along for the ride.)

So, I know a thing or two about Global Warming/Cooling/Whatever…

This environmental ‘movement’ has been around for almost 40 years now. So, why the sudden upsurge in protest marches and young people speaking at the United Nations?

Because, the children want the earth to continue to support human life, and they think what we grownups are doing is threatening their very survival. Nothing focuses the mind more effectively than the threat of extinction.  In other words, fear.

Who is Driving this School Bus?

Like all good news stories, there has to be a hook, to get peoples’ attention.

Global climate activists, including Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, participate in the United Nations 2019 Climate Action Summit, ahead of the annual United Nations General Assembly meeting of world leaders. The aim of the summit is to encourage countries to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and develop realistic plans and contributions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

The Main Stream Media (MSM) decided that Greta Thunberg was the one person everybody should know about. And because she is only 16 years of age, the youth of the world decided to back her. So, there will be a Global Climate Strike very soon.

Image is Everything

There is so much I could say about this picture. Note the crossed arms, the cupped hands.

But the biggest shock is the juxtaposition of a political giant and a little girl. This makes it feel like the battle between David and Goliath for the 21st Century.

The fact that one is a young white Swedish woman, and the other an older black American man makes this also seem like the global battle of the sexes (and the rest).

I’m sorry if that seems offensive, but when I’m being manipulated, I respond with how it feels to me.

Saturn Conjunct Pluto

I noted elsewhere that this year would see the gradual buildup of energy between these two planets until something (or someone) gives way. Saturn stands for government and controls, Pluto for change and (sometimes) revolution. (And don’t forget: WAR!)

Here’s what Robert Hand says about these conjunct planets in Planets in Youth:

Some persons with this aspect respond to the changes that must come in life with fierce resistance. You will have to cultivate the attitude of letting nature take its course, instead of building up structures to prevent change. If you do resist changes, it will only delay the inevitable and make the changes much more painful when they happen, even resulting in very severe deprivations. But if you allow changes to take place in your life, your inner fortitude will help you through any difficult times.

Here ends the lesson.

I Think, Therefore I Am…Free

1001004001341685

Intuitive Thinking as a Spiritual Path

The original title of this book was a more accurate depiction of its content: The Philosophy of Freedom. This is a hard slog for the modern reader. In this day and age, we want our spiritual insights to be given to us in bite-sized morsels. This book is a banquet that goes on too long, and before the end is reached, the reader is satiated.

But all is not lost. There are a couple of interesting things to digest.

Life as a Balanced Book

Here we touch the point where reason by itself is not in a position to determine the surplus of pleasure or pain, but must rather demonstrate that surplus as a percept in life. For human beings cannot attain reality solely through concepts, but only through the interpenetration, mediated by thinking, of concepts and percepts (and feelings are percepts). A merchant, likewise, will close his business only if the loss calculated by his accountant is confirmed by the facts. If that does not happen, he will have the accountant calculate again. We conduct the business of life in just the same way. If a philosopher wants to prove that pain is much more common than pleasure, and yet we do not feel this to be so, then we say: you have made a mistake in your brooding; think it through again! But, if, at a given moment, a business really suffers such losses that its credit can no longer satisfy the creditors, then bankruptcy results even if the merchant’s bookkeeping obscures the state of his affairs. In the same way, if, at a certain moment, the quantity of a person’s pain is so great that no hope (credit) of future pleasure can offer solace, then this must lead to bankruptcy in the business of life.

Yet the number of suicides is still relatively small in proportion to the multitude of those who live bravely on. Only very few people give up the business of life because of the presence of pain. What follows from this? Either it is incorrect to say that the quantity of pain is greater than the quantity of pleasure, or else we simply do not make continuation of life dependent on the quantity of pleasure or pain that we feel.

Women Should be Free to be Themselves

It is impossible to understand a human being fully if one bases one’s judgment on a generic concept. We are most obstinate in judging according to type when it is a question of a person’s sex. Man almost always sees in woman, and woman in man, too much of the general character of the other sex and too little of what is individual. In practical life, this does less harm to men than it does to women. The social position of women is unworthy, for the most part, because it is at many points determined not, as it should be, by the individual characteristics of an individual woman, but by the general mental picture that others form of the natural duties and needs of the female. The activity of a man in life is determined by his individual capacities and inclinations; that of a woman is supposed to be determined exclusively by the fact that she is, precisely, a woman. Woman is supposed to be a slave of the generic, of what is universally womanish. As long as men debate whether women are suited to this or that profession “according to their natural disposition,” the so-called woman question cannot evolve beyond its most elementary stage. What women are capable of according to their nature should be left for women to decide. If it is true that women are suited only to the profession that is currently allotted to them, then they will hardly be able to attain any other on their own. But they must be allowed to decide for themselves what is appropriate to their nature. Anyone who fears a cataclysm in our social conditions if women are accepted not as genetic entitles but as individuals should be told that social conditions in which one half of humanity leads an existence unworthy of human beings are conditions that stand in great need of improvement.

(Footnote:) As soon as this book appeared (1894), the objection was raised against these comments that, within what is appropriate to their sex, women can already live as individually as they like and much more freely than men, who become de-individualized through school, war and profession. I know that this objection will be raised today (1918) perhaps even more strongly than ever. Still, I must let these sentences stand, and hope that there are readers who understand how completely such an objection runs counter to the concept of freedom developed in this book, and who judge the above sentences of mine by standards other than the de-individualization of men through school and profession.

(Page 227)

Final Thoughts

We ourselves must give our actions their content. We seek in vain if we seek directives for our will outside the world in which we live. If we go beyond the satisfaction of natural drives for which Mother Nature has provided, we must seek such directives in our own moral imaginations, unless we find it easier to let ourselves be directed by the moral imagination of others. That is, we must either forego all action or act according to reasons that either we give ourselves from the world of our ideas or others give us from the same source. If we move beyond our sense-bound life of instinct and execution of the commands of human beings, then we are determined by nothing other than ourselves. We must act out of an impulse that we set ourselves, and that is determined by nothing else. To be sure, this impulse is conceptually determined in the one world of ideas. But, in fact, it can be drawn down from this world and translated into reality only through a human being. It is only within human beings themselves that monism can find a basis for the human translation of ideas into reality. Before an idea can become an action, a human being must first want it. Therefore, such wanting has its source in human beings themselves. Human being are thus the ultimate determinants of their actions. They are free.

(Page 239)

An Afterthought (my own)

No thoughts had I of anything

Or at least that’s what I thought;

I even thought I couldn’t think

But now I think I never thought.

Trudeau and his Need to be Mr. Dressup

TrudeauJustinWREJC1

Cultural Misappropriation

When I first did Justin Trudeau’s chart in 2017, I wasn’t concentrating on inconjuncts. Now I am. Let’s see what they can tell us.

Sun Inconjunct Saturn

You will always require structure in your life, and you will always be happier with some kind of discipline. But you should also try out new kinds of experiences, do new and different things and expand the structure of your life. Instead of always staying home, go out and see new places, meet new people. This is the only way that you can learn to overcome your shyness and lack of confidence. And occasionally you must let yourself go and express your real wishes and desires, no matter how immature, wild or crazy they seem. You are still a young person, which is a fact that you and those around you must keep in mind. You can’t be expected to grow up too quickly.

Venus Inconjunct Ascendant

You often feel that you haven’t any right to ask much of those you love. You feel that you must do favors for them instead of asking for their help. For you, love is an act of service, not self-gratification. Also, through relationships with others, you try to learn more about your own and other people’s inner workings. For this reason your relationships are more deep and profound than most people’s. But they are somewhat difficult, too […]

However, you should realize that others will respect you if you stand up for yourself and ask for a reasonable return in a relationship. If you constantly seem to be apologizing for who and what you are, people will begin to wonder if they have overlooked something that is wrong with you, and they begin to lose confidence in you. Thus you may bring about the criticism that you are afraid of. You are as good and as worthy of being loved as anyone. Be yourself with others, and many people will love you.

Do you think he’s learned his lesson, yet?

Why Is It So Hard to Understand Racism?

ef1879ede272b17a892d0107517052cd

“You just don’t understand why I am so angry.”

Canadians are racist. There, I’ve said it.

Does that make any difference to the national dialogue we’ve been having, lately?

I don’t think so.

In fact, you can’t even say that we’ve “woken” up yet to the reality of what it must be like be to a ‘person of colour’ in Canada, can you?

Does that make me angry, too? You bet it does.

This Federal Election is Different

Never before has one of the party leaders been from a visible minority.

And it surprised me when Jagmeet Singh was selected by the federal New Democratic Party to lead them. I didn’t see that event coming.

I regularly switch between the NDP and the Liberals when I vote, both federally and provincially. You might call my vote a tactical one. But I live in a part of the country (rural Ontario) that always votes for a Conservative candidate, so my election choice is always just a critique of whomever might be in power at the time. In other words, my vote really doesn’t count.

The Liberals under Justin Trudeau promised a great many things when we voted them into power in 2015. The one thing I hoped they push through was Proportional Representation, to replace the present system of ‘first-past-the-post’. That way, my individual vote would count, along with everyone else’s.

But the Liberals decided to keep the present system, so I’m right back to where I was previously, mostly under-represented in parliament.

With Jagmeet Singh as leader, I’d even considered voting for the Green Party for the first time federally.

And the opinion polls seem to suggest that others may have thought the same way, giving the Greens a bump in those polls which showed them outpacing the NDP for third place.

What?!

Am I a Racist, too?

Until Trudeau’s brownface photo suddenly appeared, I had been contemplating completely abandoning the NDP to its fate, a footnote in history.

Now, I’m looking in the mirror, only to find that a white, male racist face is staring back at me.

Oops.

Jagmeet: Singh-led Out?

Politician Jagmeet Singh

Does the Brownface Scandal Help the NDP?

Do you remember when in 2011 Jack Layton led the New Democratic Party to the Official Opposition in Ottawa? What stuck out? For me, it was the image of Jack looking strong.

While researching for this post, I came across this image of Jagmeet Singh doing a similar pose. Can this be accidental? I think not.

My concern, as always, is how things come about. There are no accidents here, with regards the (now infamous) scandal of Trudeau being pictured as Aladdin at an Arabian Nights gala in Vancouver in 2001. You might have wondered, as I did, that Time Magazine should have been the organization to first publish it. Why didn’t a Canadian outlet get there first?

And then, the penny dropped, as it always does eventually… brownface, when blackface would have been more controversial. A-ha!

If you mock one of your opponents, 18 years before you face them in an election, you will be seen as racist. That can only reflect well on that opponent…

What is Justin Trudeau Actually Apologizing For?

From time immemorial, people have been entertaining others by dressing up and imitating someone they know in common, even if that action may be a little tasteless. It was (seemingly) harmless in the past, but in today’s PC world, now totally unacceptable.

Cultural misappropriation, it is now called.

Has this all gone too far? Is the pendulum about to swing back again the other way?

Al Jolson sings Mammy

David Lowe commented on my post from yesterday that he lost his regional radio spot on the BBC quite a few years ago for a 1932 song called “The Sun Has Got His Hat On” because one person complained that it contained the N-word. One person! David’s concern is that we are becoming so politically correct that even the Jazz Singer may some day be outlawed, even Neil Diamond’s version.

In the past, blackface was the only way white people could share a cultural heritage that was forbidden to them by outmoded segregation laws in the United States. Blacks and whites were forbidden to have any mixed association.

Now, all those laws are erased, but the racial memories persist.

The Underground Railroad

Canada was (and still is) a safe haven in a hostile world.

This week in history, 170 years ago, Harriet Tubman ‘freed herself’. How appropriate that we should be focusing on this issue at this time. But to have the Prime Minister, a white Canadian from a privileged background, apologize not once, not twice, but for three times donning makeup to play a part in some social events as a person of colour seems to be taking this issue to a totally different level. It has now become a Canadian political football.

Racialized

verb
past tense: racialized; past participle: racialized
  1. make racial in tone or character.
“the ways in which language is used to colonize, racialize, and commodify the Other”
    • categorize or divide according to race.
      “a highly racialized society”

It seems to me that this word is divisive in nature. The fact that Trudeau would use it is indicative of a form of prejudice. What is he really apologizing for? Being racist?

Conclusion

In trying to head off the the other political parties before they could benefit from this past mistake, Trudeau is playing right into the hands of Maxime Bernier and the People’s Party of Canada.

The pendulum is about to swing the other way, again.

Tales from Riverdale

When you get something stuck in your head, there’s nothing to be done until you express it in a blog. That’s why I’m sitting here at 2 in the morning writing this.

Yesterday, after Justin Trudeau was made to apologize on television for dressing up as Aladdin in 2001 (including brownface makeup), I saw that this federal election was descending into farce.

So, meet our party leaders:

updatd-federal-debate-leaders-eng

Conservatives: Andrew Scheer

It kind of all makes more sense now…

I am being facetious, here, so please don’t shoot the messenger.

See you in the funny papers.

Benjamin Creme: Overshadowed…

Benjamin-Creme

By The Maitreya Christ

I’m sorry to see that this enlightened individual has left the world stage. I went to see one of his appearances in Vancouver in 1980. Unfortunately, the Maitreya did not speak through him that night. Like so many spiritual people at that time, he eagerly awaited the return of the Christ to the world.

In the end, the nonappearance of this Ascended Master at a promised time rather undercut the validity of Creme’s message. I don’t think he ever recovered his reputation.

CremeBenjaminWREJC1

This is a rectified chart. All other versions show him to be born at 8:45 am, but one person noted that Benjamin’s Master told him he was Capricorn Rising. And that fits the timing of his first direct contact with this Master at age 27 (see the position of Pluto in the 7th House).

Sun Inconjunct Pluto

You are very serious for your age, perhaps too much so, for taking everything very seriously can destroy much of the joy in life. Not all encounters are important and require you to put yourself on the line, although you may try to live that way.

Moon Inconjunct Venus

You need to be loved, even more than most people, particularly by your mother or another woman who takes the place of your mother. This need for love will be the force behind many of your actions.

Mercury Inconjunct Pluto

On another level, this aspect can mean that at certain times in your life you will go through tremendous psychological changes. All your thoughts and opinions will change completely. These stages may seem difficult, but you will be much better off if you let go of the past and welcome the new ideas.
