Singing from the Same Hymn Sheet?

A Christmas Carol (1843)

This is a ghost story. It is meant to scare the Dickens out of you. In modern terms, Ebenezer Scrooge has a negative NDE (near death experience). It woke him up permanently from his self-imposed nightmare. He became enlightened.

Scrooge (1951)

Alastair Sim’s version is the one most commonly held to be the ‘authentic’ vision of  the Charles Dickens book. Yes, the acting is melodramatic, and sometimes bordering on manic, but the story always needs to have a clear reason why Scrooge would change his ways, seemingly overnight. The Ghosts of Past, Present, and Things-to-Come have to show him the error of his ways. They do this, in spades, by bringing Love into his understanding and by always reminding him of the need for reformation and redemption, in order to continue his journey here on Earth.

The colourized version was on the CBC last night. It felt more like watching Gone With The Wind. In other words, 1939 looking back on the 1850’s, rather than 1951 looking back on the 1840’s. And, as a bonus, there were many young actors in the film who would later be television and movie stars.

One of the minor glitches of this film shows up on the Christmas morning mirror scene. There seems to be an extra image behind Scrooge’s back. Someone else has noticed it, too, and isolated the ‘ghostly’ apparition in the following video clip.

Check the left corner of the mirror…

Who knows, maybe Charles Dickens decided to show up?

A Perennial Favourite

White Christmas

Guess what was on TV last night?

Oh, darn, you guessed it!

White Christmas is one of those movies that bears repeating, but, as I suggested to my wife, Susan, last night, I remember the original version better. What original version? Holiday Inn.

The fact that they used the same set for the inn makes it feel like coming back home.

However, the 1942 film has a ‘blackface’ performance, which is nowhere to be seen in 1954, even though there is a reference to a Minstrel show. And in those 1950’s days of white bread, it’s not surprising that there are no cast members from visible minorities.

And the ending, seen above, has a gaggle of awkward dancing children, which I found a bit off-putting. No doubt they were related to members of the film crew.

But the song, as always, is worth the price of admission, especially sung by Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. And with a bit of luck, their dream will come true, this year.

Scheer Hypocrisy, Again

v6vu1a7m59j11

Andrew Scheer Bites the Bullet

When I originally wrote about the upcoming 12/12 Full Moon, earlier this month, I pictured, in my mind’s eye, Donald Trump quitting as President. Turns out, I was partially right (a Conservative leader resigned his position), but also partially wrong (Canada, not the U.S.)

On December 12th, Andrew Scheer announced that he was stepping down as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. He claimed it was the fact that he was missing seeing his children grow up. That confirms the emotional part of the Venus/Saturn/Pluto connection for the day. But the other two elements (conservatism and exposure) were represented fully, too. The CPC were out to get rid of him, and the rumour mill hinted that party funds were financing his children’s education. Oops.

This was the man who felt that Justin Trudeau was too privileged to be in touch with everyday folk, like Scheer felt himself to be.

What is it about politics that brings out the worst in people? Scheer hypocrisy…

20/20 Vision: Impeachment

The Road Ahead

The House of Representatives vote to impeach Donald Trump showed the full extent of the political divide in the United States. Most Democrats voted ‘yes’ and all Republicans ‘no’. This Presidency has been the most polarizing since… Obama’s.

Notice that there’s only one inconjunct in this chart. Let’s examine that:

Neptune Inconjunct Ascendant

This aspect can be a sign that you feel you must give way to others in order to get along with them. This can take two forms, both of which will be difficult to handle while you are young. The less positive form is simply yielding to all outside pressure and always giving in to others’ desires. This will produce unconscious feelings of resentment that you can’t express, but that makes your relationships with others rather difficult. And as you get older, if you do not learn to stand up for your rights, this problem will get worse, because you express your unconscious resentment as a martyred attitude, which makes it impossible for others to appreciate anything they get from you. Thus the results of your sacrifice are totally negative, because you are not happy with giving and they are not happy with receiving.

(OK. That seems to sum up Donald Trump’s feelings about everybody.)

But does it spell disaster? The rest of the description is hopeful.

But the other, more positive, way of dealing with this energy is by giving freely before others try to take it away from you. In order to do this, you have to feel good about yourself and confident that you will always have enough for yourself and others. One side of you likes to help and take care of people and will not feel taken by those whom you give to. In the highest expression of this aspect, what you gain for yourself will not mean as much as what you gain for others, which is the effect you should work for.

On another level entirely, you should be very careful of your health because you are unusually sensitive to certain elements in your environment. You may not be able to handle certain foods or drugs — even prescribed drugs should be handled with care — and you should avoid letting your body become weak.

Conclusion

In the larger scheme of things, Donald Trump will be a footnote in history. The fact that he is joining the ranks of Bill Clinton and one other president, Andrew Johnson (Tricky Dicky quit first), speaks to the reality that no one is above the law. Emperor Nero chose assisted suicide, Trump will not.

He will survive the Senate trial. But there is now a chink in his armour. By this time next year we will see what the effect of that apparent weakness has.

Predictions: Once Upon A Time

9781852306854

Millennium Prophecies (1995 paperback version)

I bought this little book from The College of Psychic Studies Library in 2007, after it was withdrawn from circulation. There had been only two times that someone had borrowed it, with due dates of 07 Jan 2002 and 02 Feb 2007.

So, a not very popular library book, obviously.

And yet, the subject matter has longed proved a fascination for a great many people.

The Year 2000

Leading up to the end of the 20th century, people were sure that this year would signal the end of the world, or at least the end of our computer systems. Previous versions of operating systems used the last two digits of the year in their programming. That spelled potential doom for personal computers the world over. So, the bright sparks who sold computers decided to use the fear of failure to get everyone updated.

The unfortunate consequence was that everyone expected that airlines and other public services would be at risk of failing at midnight on 31 Dec 1999. (“Let’s party like it’s 1999” took on an extra meaning.) As each timezone clicked over to 1 Jan 2000, people held their breath. Would the Machine Stop? Uh, no.

A.T. Mann

I have long followed this astrologer. His Life*Time method of dating events in the birth chart has helped me understand the cyclical nature of time. He readily admits, in this book, that certain planets in aspect give us hints for the future, but we cannot really see what happens until after the events pass.

As this book was originally written in 1992, Mann seems to focus a lot of his attention on the breakup of the Soviet Union, but that’s to be expected. It was those ‘current’ events which may have inspired him to write about prophecy. After all, Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce got there first, but even they got it wrong sometimes.

Jung’s Seven Sermons to the Dead

bba3efba60a285418a5550a6a644062c.1000x680x1

My reason for reviewing this little book here is one long quotation from Carl Jung:

The language of the sermons is very much like the late Roman Gnostic texts studied by Jung and the voices are prophetic. A portion of the seventh sermon reads like a biblical prophecy.

At immeasurable distance stands one single Star in the zenith.

In this world is man Abraxas, the creator and the destroyer of his own world.

This Star is the god and the goal of man.

This is his one guiding god. In him goeth man to his rest. Toward him goeth the long journey of the soul after death. In him shineth forth as light all that man bringeth back from the greater world. To this one god man shall pray.

Prayer increaseth the light of the Star. It casteth a bridge over death. It prepareth life for the smaller world and assuageth the hopeless desires for the greater.

When the greater world waxeth cold, burneth the Star.

Between man and his one god there standeth nothing, so long as man can turn away his eyes from the flaming spectacle of Abraxas.

Man here, god there.

Weakness and nothingness here, there eternally creative power.

Here nothing but darkness and chilling moisture. There wholly sun.

Whereupon the dead were silent and ascended like the smoke above the herdsman’s fire, who through the night kept watch over his flock. (page 93)

Conclusion

I often wonder why I read things in a specific sequence. Yesterday, I wrote about the Impossible Dream. The final line may have been the reason for my dream, the night before.

“To reach…the unreachable star.”

Need I say more?
