The Day “Death in Venice” was Conceived

Tadzio Glimpsed on the Venice Beach (May 26, 1911)

Thomas Mann – May 1911

I could have entitled this: “A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Mann” but that would have been too clever by half. Since I’ve written about Wladyslaw Moes, already, I am now going to demonstrate how the intersection of two lives can produce great writing.

The timing of this chart is considered correct. Therefore, the double inconjunct involving Jupiter and the Pluto/Midheaven conjunction must also be correct.

Jupiter Inconjunct Pluto

You have a great deal of creative power, and the major challenge of your life will be learning how to handle it. First of all, you must realize that you will get the most out of life if you direct your energies toward helping the people around you and those you love. You will want to change many conditions in the world, which is fine as long as your reasons are not purely selfish ones.

If you use the energies of this aspect selfishly, you will have serious conflicts with authorities, persons in power and adults in general. You may try to make changes before you have learned how to do so creatively, without provoking such resistance that your efforts are blocked. To be effective, you must have the necessary skills.

Jupiter Inconjunct Midheaven

The problem with this aspect is to find a balance between, on the one hand, expressing yourself creatively, perhaps artistically, and having a good time and, on the other hand, getting ahead in life, learning the ways of the world and finding an acceptable role in society. You know you will have to make sacrifices in order to accomplish anything of value.

Pluto Conjunct Midheaven

During your life you will go through many changes, but you will always have the desire to make an impact upon the world and to be regarded as a person of significance. The danger you must face is that you may want to go too far too fast and thereby alienate the people who have authority over you. While you are young, this will mean mostly parents and teachers, but you might occasionally encounter police or government officials.

Now I can see why Mann hated the Nazis (in the pre-war years, especially) and then standing up to Senator McCarthy and the HUAC in the 1950’s.

First Sighting

“Death in Venice” is the result, as I previously indicated, of seeing ‘Adzio’ as he was known by his family, for the first time on the first day of a visit to Venice, soon after Mann’s hearing of Gustav Mahler’s death, that same month. Cholera was on Mann’s mind.

I chose 6 pm (local time) to see what energies were active that fateful day in Venice. I probably should have anticipated a Yod (Finger of God) pointing at Uranus @ 29° Capricorn, formed from inconjuncts to Pluto and the Midheaven. Now where have we seen this energy before? (I won’t delineate the aspects because that’s not really why we’re reviewing this event.)

Moes’ Mars is conjunct Mann’s Ascendant and the event Midheaven. Talk about the tumblers of a lock lining up. Mann’s Pluto is opposite Moes’ Sun, while Mann’s Sun is conjunct Moes’ Pluto. And Mann’s Sun is opposite Moes’ Jupiter, while Mann’s Mars is conjunct Moes’ Saturn. Moes’ South Node is conjunct the event Sun, while Moes’ Neptune is conjunct the event Pluto. (Is that enough proof?)

The Real Tadzio from “Death in Venice”

Wladyslaw Moes (November 17, 1900 – December 17, 1986)

In 1911

I’m not sure why I’ve gone here, but, as a writer, I’m aware of how real, live individuals can help create a character in a book or play. Thomas Mann (June 6, 1875 – August 12, 1955) caught a glimpse of this boy with his Polish family in Venice in 1911, and may have become obsessed with him, in reality.

All the details of the story… are taken from experience … In the dining-room, on the very first day, we saw the Polish family, which looked exactly the way my husband described them: the girls were dressed rather stiffly and severely, and the very charming, beautiful boy of about 13 was wearing a sailor suit with an open collar and very pretty lacings. He caught my husband’s attention immediately. This boy was tremendously attractive, and my husband was always watching him with his companions on the beach. He didn’t pursue him through all of Venice—that he didn’t do—but the boy did fascinate him, and he thought of him often.

Here is his randomized birth chart:

Yes, well, it’s obvious that this timing may be ‘slightly’ off, because the Neptune/Pluto wide conjunction in Gemini should actually be in the 5th House to match up with the ‘event’ of being immortalized by Thomas Mann in his story. Here’s a clip from the 1971 film of the same name:

There is one inconjunct in Moes’ birth chart and it is not dependent on a correct timing:

Mercury Inconjunct Neptune

The challenge of this aspect is to make your thinking and communication with others more clear. Your rational mind is strongly influenced by your sensitivity, imagination and ideals, although you are always sure how this happens. You tend to spend too much time in your own imaginary world that no one else can share, and this confuses your dealings with others. You will have to learn to face reality, so that you can at least communicate with people. Otherwise you will have a very lonely life.

Sometimes this aspect means that you are so nervously sensitive that you pick up all the negative psychological energies around you and react to them very strongly. If this is true for you, the only way to deal with it is to be moved to a peaceful, positive environment. If there is too much noise or too many bad vibrations in your life, you will withdraw more and more and refuse to face reality.

(This could have been a description of Thomas Mann, too.)

How true.

Are Yaqui Naguals and Bon Ngagpas One and the Same?

Nagual shape-shifters
Milarepa, wearing the distinctive white shawl (zen) of a Ngagpa

Was it the combined Ng sound, or a spiritual intuition? I never know for sure what triggers my Cosmic leaps, but here’s another one: Tibertan Bon teachers were the progenitors of the Yaqui Naguals of Mexico…

Urgyen Nam Chuk was well known as a Bon Ngagpa, a married man of high spiritual caliber. The Ngagpa tradition is found in most of the Tibetan spiritual legacies from the four Buddhist schools of thought and all the Bon traditions. They were instantly identifiable by their hair, which is worn long and uncut, either in a ponytail or in dreadlocks.

Ngagpas have always been regarded as the spiritual geniuses of Tibet, wild, unpredictable, and incredible. My teacher was like this. Thus, as I grew older I had to be observant and aware in order to avoid practical jokes, booby traps, and the general mayhem that was subtly intertwined with the long hours of discipline, study, and hard work.

Christopher Hansard – The Tibetan Art of Living (page xvi-xvii)

Now doesn’t that sound a lot like Carlos Castaneda‘s description of Don Juan Matus and other teachers? You might say that Castaneda became one himself, before his death.

The book is divided into two sections. The first section, The Teachings, is a first-person narrative that documents Castaneda’s initial interactions with don Juan. He speaks of his encounters with Mescalito (a teaching spirit inhabiting all peyote plants), divination with lizards and flying using the “yerba del diablo” (lit. “Devil’s Weed”; Jimson weed), and turning into a blackbird using “humito” (lit. “little smoke”; a smoked powder containing Psilocybe mexicana). The second, A Structural Analysis, is an attempt, Castaneda says, at “disclos[ing] the internal cohesion and the cogency of don Juan’s Teachings.”

Not everything is black and white, is it? I rest my case.

The Medium is the Message: The Tibetan Art of Living

Christopher Hansard (January 3, 1957)

This book was gifted to me by Susan’s cousin, Ann. It’s a wonderful primer for the Tibetan Bon medicine. So, just to be clear, this is not your usual Buddhist writing. It is so much more than that.

Christopher Hansard has written an eloquent yet practical guide to a soulful integration of all aspects of our lives. He contributes a wise and powerful voice to contemporary spiritual thought.

Meet Christopher Hansard

How’s that for an inscrutable look? His birth details are scant, as well: just his birth date and the country.

This birth chart is totally randomized, and centred on Wellington, New Zealand. So it could be totally wrong, at so many different levels. But his own recounting of how he got involved in this spiritual dimension is evidence of some correct direction by the Universe.

The slow drumming of the drum reached into every part of me, reorganizing the way I was made, making inner space for consciousness, making room for my humanity to grow, creating spiritual bonds with everything I had learned from my teacher since childhood.

This would be the last year of my teacher’s life. He brought many important lessons for me, and I remembered when we first met in New Zealand in 1961. I was on a beach at Rona Bay, Wellington. I was four years old, out for a day by the sea with my parents.

The tide was slowly receding and the sea fell in long gentle shallow water gathering small shellfish to cook for their evening meal. Seagulls wheeled and hung expectantly in the wind as I walked along the beach toward the faded, weather-beaten pier.

All that day I’d felt something important was going to happen, something I already knew but did not have the language to express. My parents called me to leave, to go home. But inside me, I knew I could not go yet.

“I have to stay here.”

“Come on, it’s time to go.”

“No, I have to stay.”

Why?”

I didn’t know what to say. All my words and thoughts were jumbled. I trudged toward my parents. Then, as we climbed up the beach to the gravel road, I saw my teacher standing there, waiting. A rainbow appeared and he laughed.

Urgyen Nam Chuk introduced himself to my parents. He explained that he represented a Tibetan spiritual and medical tradition that, among other tools, used a profound system of astrology. This had suggested that I might be a candidate for education in the Tibetan Bon spiritual and medical tradition.

My parents weren’t impressed at first. But as they got to know Urgyen and understood that he was not looking for handouts of any kind, they felt more at ease. They began to understand how important it was for me, and allowed me to go through the next stage, which was a series of tests and spiritual questions to determine whether the astrological process was correct.

My parents were aware of the Tibetan tradition of incarnating spiritual teachers, but Urgyen explained that he did not regard me as one of these, but as someone who, with training, had the potential to develop rare and special abilities related to medicine, healing, and spirituality in the Bon tradition. I was not regarded as perfect or special and would not be encouraged to think otherwise.

Page xv-xvi

In his birth chart, this event would have been represent by Pluto @ 0° Virgo in the 4th House.

So, trusting that this timing is correct, that indicates that Saturn is (almost) perfectly inconjunct the Ascendant @ 9° Taurus (and that he’s a definite ‘two feet on the ground’ type of person).

Saturn Inconjunct Ascendant

With this aspect you probably have a rather serious attitude toward life and other people. It may be quite difficult for you to simply go out and have a good time. You want to be serious and to spend all your time performing significant tasks. This attitude may have developed because you were discouraged from enjoying yourself when you were younger. You may have been made to feel that only work is important, that play serves no useful purpose. This is not true, however, because playing has a positive and useful function in the development of the adult mind and body, Not only does it serve to release tensions, but it also helps train you in social and physical skills that will be useful in any work you do later.

You need to be encouraged to believe in yourself and to recognize your personal strength. You have to be helped to realize that you as an individual are worth a lot and that you need to get some satisfaction from life as much as the next person does.

On occasion this aspect indicates frail physical health, which can be corrected only by paying a great deal of attention to hygiene, personal habits and proper diet. However, this aspect may also signify that you worry too much about your health. Try not to be so concerned about it unless a physician has diagnosed a definite problem.

You may find it rather difficult to express yourself to other people. This is another expression of your lack of self-confidence, which will change if you get positive emotional support from the people around you.

And that’s why I titled this post ‘the medium is the message.’

Did Hearst and Davies Return as Epstein and Maxwell?

William Randolph Hearst circa 1910
Marion Davies

It’s a funny thing how connections are made. This one comes through a fellow-astrologer blogger who wrote today that Epstein may have been chosen to carry on Hearst’s dirty dealing, in-between lives.

Ordinarily, that would have seemed far-fetched, but when he added the death chart for Hearst and compared it to Epstein’s birth chart (both set for noon, since he hadn’t known their exact timing details), there was a similarity that was unmistakable, at least to me.

I’ll let the other astrologers out there make whatever connections they can see, but now I want to make what I can only claim as a cosmic leap into the unknown. As I was reading Hearst’s bio, I decided to check on Marion Davies’ life and death. That’s when I thought of Ghislaine Maxwell.

And, honestly, I think the connections are clearer, here. What do you think? (And yes, I did notice that Maxwell was born just 3 months AFTER Davies died in 1961.)

Is This Why I Got Drunk on Saturday Night?

Full Moon in Gemini (December 18, 2021)

I’ve had a full day (yesterday) to reflect on my feelings of shame and regret for what happened at our (early) family Christmas gathering last Saturday. I very seldom get drunk, because usually I know my limitations. But Saturday was something ‘other’.

Locally, this was the precise moment of the Sun/Moon opposition. As I’m fully aware, the heavens hold the key to what’s going on in the earth and its inhabitants, both collectively and individually.

Moon Inconjunct Venus

You need to be loved, even more than most people, particularly by your mother or another woman who takes the place of your mother. This need for love will be the force behind many of your actions. If you don’t find the love you are looking for, you will develop an insecure hunger for love from everyone you meet. However, you may express this in strange ways, such as a desire for food, especially sweets, which unconsciously represent love to you.

Moon Inconjunct Pluto

This aspect means that your emotions are very intense and not always easy to deal with. Often your feelings make you want to do or say something without knowing why. Also you may have very intense moods in which you withdraw from those around you into a world of your own. This should not be a serious problem unless you have been brought up to have all sorts of fears and worries. In that case your actions will be driven by your fears, and you may behave quite strangely. If you do not feel accepted and emotionally supported at home, you may constantly feel guilty for what you think you have done to others, or jealous that people aren’t paying enough attention to you, or generally possessive of those around you.

Does that seem clear to you? I hadn’t had lunch, so when I was offered some chocolate-covered almonds, in the early afternoon, I wolfed them down. Then, after two beers, I proceeded to drink half a bottle of Baileys, followed by two glasses of potent red wine. My stomach didn’t stand a chance. Needless to say, I ended up throwing up, something I very rarely do.

Here’s the ‘bigger’ picture for an understanding of my behaviour. Obviously, I had been triggered by yet another family gathering where I’m essentially the odd-man-out. And the coronavirus news of the Omicron Variance was in the background driving a nervousness for our get-together. I’m sensitive to other peoples’ vibes, so I guess I decided to drown them out.

And, yes, I felt very guilty afterwards for acting so uncharacteristically.

I Thought that I’d Wait Until Late in the Day:

To Let You Know that I’m Stopping for Awhile, if not Forever

Selfie from January 2016

I’m feeling tired, rundown, less than ideal these days. Part of it is due to the constant drip, drip, drip of negative news. Our family is fragmented. The world is divided between those who believe in COVID-19 and those who don’t. Even politics has become further bipartisan (and yes, I mean that in a way that usually refers to the political divide between Liberal and Conservative, Democrats and Republicans). But, most of all, I’m feeling like I’ve written enough on these pages. What more can I say?

She May Be More Than Just the New Annie

Celina Smith (May 12, 2008?)

OK. This is one for the books. There is a decided lack of birth information for this young lady. That may have been by design because the role she played last night in Annie Live! (on NBC) was supposed to be just 11. Most online reports suggest that she is 12. Only a few admit that she’s actually 13. And where she was born might have been muddled up with another individual with the same name. But, nevertheless, I have raised a birth chart for her, with these conflicting bits of birth data.

The timing is randomized (and may need tweaking to get it right). In the meantime, it’s all we have to work with. There is one inconjunct which does not depend on an accurate birth time.

Mars Inconjunct Pluto

You have a strong will and always want to have your own way. But very often it seems as if tremendous forces are working to prevent you from getting what you want. If you have this problem, it is because of the way you go about trying to achieve your goals. If you put too much force into your desire to get something, you may unknowingly alienate people because your aggressive manner shows that you will let nothing stop you from getting what you want. Even if this isn’t the way you really feel about it, you should recognize that your forcefulness creates this impression.

A New Aretha Franklin?

This is a picture of Aretha at about 12 years of age. Do you see the similarity? Because I know that Aretha died about 10 years after Celina was born, I wonder if this is one of those situations that I’ve seen in the past where a soul on its way out partially inhabits a new life in order to be ready when they die.

Check out their combined charts.

Since Celina’s Moon, Ascendant and Midheaven are not to be relied upon, I will focus on other things when comparing their charts. Aretha’s Ascendant is opposite Celina’s Venus, while Celina’s Mars is conjunct Aretha’s Pluto. Also, Aretha’s Midheaven is conjunct Celina’s South Node, a sure sign of continuity between them. At the same time, Celina’s North Node/Neptune is conjunct Aretha’s Venus. Celina’s Sun is conjunct Aretha’s Saturn, and Celina’s Mercury is partway between Aretha’s Mars/Jupiter conjunction. These two ‘feel’ connected. I’m not the only one who thinks so…

Meanwhile, here are another couple of images of Celina:

Doesn’t she look like an old soul?

The Wellspring*: Tune In to Your Spiritual Self

December 3, 2021: *New Channelling (XLII)

The factors for allowing the energies to flow are so simple.

Spiritual awareness is innate in everyone and an openness, to trust and relax into a quiet state, is all that there is to it. Though many require music, incense and crystals to bring about a meditative state, it is not absolutely necessary. Some will suggest that you have to perform a ritual or specific action to meditate. There are those who find it hard and get upset with themselves if their head seems to have “a mind of its own” which they can’t control, and it won’t be still.

Just give yourself a short period of time daily to just sit and be quiet, eliminating outside distractions if possible. That is all that is required. Maybe a prayer will help. Over a few days, as the practice becomes a pattern, you will become aware that you are going deeply into yourself and the feeling will be pleasant. Sometimes you may fall asleep and that is good too as relaxation will rejuvenate you.

Each finds their own way to tune into their spiritual self which suits their nature. Owning your own unique identity is how you become aware of the power you have to action. Creation can take many forms and levels. It is expressed through diverse activities. You create through the senses, perceiving, speech, touch, taste, hearing and thought; and through these means you bring something new into being.
