City of Vancouver, Mid-70’s

1970s-Aerial-view-of-Downtown-Vancouver-and-False-Creek-between-Burrard-Street-and-Granville-Street-Bridge-with-train-bridge-and-Granvill

The railway lines are on the top right of this aerial shot. In fact the first bridge is probably Cambie Street, The Broadway and Columbia bridges are just out of view.

Why is this important? Because the SkyTrain, which was introduced during Expo ’86 is now superimposed over the railway tracks. The landscape has changed forever from when I lived there.

Here’s another view, including the North Shore. Stunning vistas.

Some of the stars pictured above will be quite familiar to you. Some might not. The point of this exercise is to show the world that a lot of American talent is actually from Canada.

For a small listing of some of these stars click this link.

Sometimes the only time you ever find out where they’re from is when they win an award of some kind, and then the Canadian media will let you know.

“Have a great day!”

Father (in) Time has Wrinkles

a_wrinkle_in_time-movie

A Wrinkle in Time

According to everyone who read this 1962 bestselling book, this is one of the world’s best. I wouldn’t know, never having been privileged enough to read it.

But I saw the movie today with my granddaughter, and she seemed bored. She’s nine years old, about five years younger than the heroine of the story, Meg. Most of the film was special effects, and after a while those FX start to wear out their specialness.

The Oprah Effect

a-wrinkle-in-time-poster-social

When the world found out that she would be involved, people started to pay attention. But, honestly, that’s not enough to make it worthwhile. Reese Witherspoon is funnier, and she steals the show as Mrs. Whatsit.

But the star of the show has to be the young lady playing Meg, Storm Reid. Her journey is the ‘warrior-in-training’ one.  Her “wound is how the light gets in”. Sound familiar?

Finding Father

chris_pine-_dr._alex_murry_-h_2017

It’s the hero’s journey. Every great story has it: think Luke Skywalker facing Darth Vader. Megan’s father, Dr. Alex Murry, is lost in space (and time). He cannot find his way back home. He needs help, and Meg needs her Dad. Her ‘cry in the night’ signaled to the universe that she wanted to find (never dreaming that she’d be) the solution to his dilemma.

The four years between her Dad’s disappearance and the present time has undermined Meg’s confident. Adolescence would have done that, too, but this missing piece in her life has made it much worse. She is distrustful, and acting out at school. In other words, she has no reason to “believe in herself”. (When asked, my granddaughter told me that was the message of the movie.)

Children who have missing fathers have to fight harder to gain and maintain their equilibrium. I suspect that’s why so much was made of Meg’s imbalance in the Cave where they meet the Happy Medium (who wasn’t very happy to help). It’s a visual sign.

Conclusion

When Alex apologized to his children and his wife, I cried. The sense of abandonment washed over me like a shower, followed by a feeling of total release.

This film is cathartic. So, for that alone, it is worth the price of admission.

Go see A Wrinkle in Time. Chris Pine isn’t getting any younger.

Searching for the COMMUNITY Symbol

trident-graphic

It’s a simple job, right? You just Google images until you find the one that you want.

But what if that image doesn’t exist? What if you then use the Bing search and still come up with nothing? Most people would invent their own.

My Criteria

I wanted two things to be reflected in the symbol:

Neptune’s Trident and the Bermuda Triangle.

I pictured the trident interlocking with the triangle. Only one image did that, and it looked like a stylized Ukraine symbol crossed with an Israeli six pointed star, like this:

depositphotos_55118201-stock-illustration-trident-vector

The Closest Approximation

These are Lego accessories. They are supposed to be identical, but there are differences.

However, they lend a certain gravitas if worn as a lapel pin or a signet ring. For simplicity sake, this will be the look of the COMMUNITY symbol in the graphic novel.

Conclusion

I could have also drafted the picture myself. But I think I want to keep that image private.

Chaos Theory: the Butterfly Effect

Butterfly-effect

Can One Small Act Lead to Change?

We like to think so, but the concept is counter-intuitive at best. After all, one person cannot effect change in the greater world, can they?

The idea of the Butterfly Effect has taken hold of our imaginations. In itself the idea is scientifically insignificant, until rounding was introduced to a value in a computer program for modelling predictive weather phenomenon. Then it changed the outcome in the what might happen two months down the line.

But does it really happen in “real” life?

Three Billboards…

three-billboards-outside-ebbing-missouri-2017122925433

We watched this award winning movie last night.

The plot line is simple, but far-reaching.

Mildred Hayes is grieving the rape and murder of her teenage daughter Angela that occurred seven months earlier. Angry over the lack of progress in the investigation, Mildred rents three abandoned billboards near her home, and posts on them: “Raped While Dying“, “And Still No Arrests?“, and “How Come, Chief Willoughby?“ The billboards upset the townspeople, including Chief Bill Willoughby and Officer Jason Dixon, the latter being a racist and a violent alcoholic. The open secret that Willoughby suffers from terminal pancreatic cancer adds to everyone’s disapproval. Mildred and her son Robbie are harassed and threatened, but to Robbie’s chagrin, she stays firm about keeping the billboards up.

While Willoughby is sympathetic to Mildred’s frustration, he finds the billboards an unfair attack on his character. Angered by Mildred’s lack of respect for his authority, Dixon threatens businessman Red Welby, who had rented Mildred the billboards, and he arrests her friend and coworker, Denise, on trivial marijuana possession charges. Mildred is also visited by her abusive ex-husband Charlie, who blames her for their daughter’s death.

Willoughby brings Mildred in for questioning after she injures her dentist in an altercation in the dental clinic. During the interview, Willoughby coughs up blood. He leaves the hospital against medical advice and spends an idyllic day with his wife Anne and their two daughters, then commits suicide. He leaves suicide notes for several people, including one to Mildred, in which he explains that she was not a factor in his suicide and that he secretly paid to keep the billboards up for another month, amused at the trouble this will bring her and hope that they will keep attention on the murder. Mildred is threatened by a crop-haired stranger in her store. Dixon reacts to the news of Willoughby’s death by assaulting Welby and throwing him out of a window. This is witnessed by Willoughby’s replacement, Abercrombie, who fires Dixon.

The billboards are destroyed by arson. Mildred retaliates by tossing Molotov cocktails at the police station, which she believes is unoccupied for the night. However, Dixon is there to read a letter left for him by Willoughby, which advises him to let go of hate and learn to love, as the only way to realize his wish to become a detective. Dixon escapes with Angela’s case file but suffers severe burns. Mildred’s acquaintance James witnesses the incident and provides Mildred with an alibi, claiming they were on a date. Dixon is treated for his burns, and he is temporarily confined in the same hospital room as Welby, to whom he apologizes.

Discharged from the hospital, Dixon overhears the man who threatened Mildred bragging in a bar of an incident similar to Angela’s murder. He notes the Idaho license plate number of the man’s vehicle, then provokes a fight by scratching the man’s face. At home later, he removes a sample of the man’s DNA from under his fingernails. Meanwhile, Mildred goes on a date with James to thank him for the alibi. Charlie enters with his 19-year-old girlfriend Penelope, and he admits to burning the billboards. Mildred tells Charlie to treat Penelope well, and she leaves.

Abercrombie informs Dixon that the DNA sample does not match DNA found on Angela’s body and that the man was overseas on military duty and had come back to the country 9 months before. Dixon stays confused and does not connect the clues. Still his instinct tells him the guy is guilty. Mildred and Dixon conclude that the man must be guilty of some other rape, and set out for Idaho to kill him. On the way, Mildred confesses to Dixon that she set the police station fire, though he indicates that he knew it was her all along. They express reservations about their mission but agree to decide what to do along the way. (Wikipedia)

Conclusion

Although this film is clearly a fantasy, it has many truthful elements which seem to echo the Butterfly Effect. But I think the most important one involved tho letters that Chief Willoughby left for Mildred, Dixon and his wife. They were masterpieces of how to effect change in others, and the results were visible.

So, try to remember that no act, however small,  goes unnoticed. You might not be able to predict how things will turn out, but you can be sure something will change.

Media: Are YOU Getting the Point Yet?

Marshall McLuhan

The Medium IS the Message

Marshall McLuhan was way ahead of the pack. He saw in the 60’s that control of the media equates to control of our minds. In those days, that meant movies, TV, radio, newspapers and magazines. He’d obviously been influenced by George Orwell’s 1984 and Big Brother. Could he really have foreseen the Internet and Social Media? Personal computers, tablets and cell phones weren’t in the public domain, yet.

The Goggle Box

Medium is the Message

It didn’t take television executives long to realize that they could influence public opinion by producing shows that were controversial and leading-edge.

A rundown of the top 70’s TV programs should be enough to demonstrate the truth of this. In fact, the movies were losing their audience, so movie executives began to fight back with films that were more and more violent.

I won’t try to analyze the effects on society, but it could be seen in the streets during those years. It was like setting a match to a bonfire.

The Google Box

safari-google-970x546

Now we have computer technology at our fingertips. And, boy oh boy, do we like to use it. In itself, this medium is benign, but the people who are providing the products we are consuming are laughing all the way to the bank. Why? Because of the advertising that goes along with the sites.

As Vance Packard originally predicted, if you can catch people’s attention, even subliminally, you can influence how they will spend their money. And the biggest selling point? Sex.

We seem to be a species that can be led by our hormones.

Conclusion

OBEY_Medium_Is_the_Message_Detail

So, my point of this exercise is to warn you that you are being ‘influenced’ constantly.

Big Brother is not only watching you, He is listening, too. It seems that He (or His public female ‘voice’) is laughing at you, too.

Now, who’s the laughing stock? YOU!

Armageddon: Having an Apocalyptic Fit?

armageddon-the-end-of-the-world_1

The Plains of Megiddo

The End of the World as We Know It

Let’s put some perspective on this. Apocalypse literally means ‘an uncovering’. That’s why the book in the Bible where this is discussed is called “The Revelation of St. John”.

John’s images and symbols came to him while he was having an ‘out of body experience’ (OOBE). There could have been many reasons for this ‘vision’, but the most likely is fasting (think, Jesus in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights).

John didn’t know ‘when’ these things will occur, just that they are scheduled to become real, sometime in the future.

The Late, Great Planet Earth

Most of my understanding of the ‘current events’ of the Apocalypse comes from Hal Lindsey’s book.

It was a bestseller in the 1970’s and it seemed to be a wake-up call that we were heading for a final solution (soul-ution?) of the difficulties we had been experiencing.

However, Lindsey’s timing was a bit off. Isn’t that always the way with prophecy? In fact, the “End of the World” may be slated for 2043. But I’m always mindful that no one knows the day nor the hour (Matthew 24:36).

Megiddo

Megiddo

So, why Megiddo? It would seem that the location has a bit of history for being the site of a battle or two. The area is totally flat and therefore perfect for a conflict between opposing forces.

Israel is also the most contentious country in the Middle East, having been returned to the Jewish diaspora communities.

Somehow, ever since 1948, the struggle to keep Israelis safe from the rest of the world has turned into a massive effort to rid the whole region of their enemies. This has resulted in Palestinian ‘cleansing’ and provocative actions against Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and other Arabic states. Do we need reminding that Israel has nuclear weapons?

In the present time, Syria has become a battleground where these actions have become visible. And, as a result, the Middle East is a ‘tinder box’, ready to be engulfed in fire (and brimstone) at any minute.

Thomas Benjamin’s Vision

In My Satanic Struggle (screenplay), I have come up against a few obstacles. The most obvious is the fact that it was originally written in 1978. Now, 40 years later, most of the scenarios that I was projecting into the future have not occurred in the time frame I originally set out.

So: what to do about that? Fortunately, for me, a couple of movies and TV shows have presented a solution.

inglourious_basterds-1024x570

Quentin Tarantino effectively rewrote the history of World War II in this film. That made me think, ‘if he can do that, so can I.’

Life on Mars

The other one was Life on Mars. Here was a TV show that took a present day police detective back in time to the 70’s. A-ha! Maybe Benjamin could be in a coma, while experiencing this alternate reality of Life on Earth. It would take care of the awkward bits, for sure.

Besides, that would be an echo of St. John’s Revelation. St. Paul, writing about St. John in 2 Corinthian’s 12, said this:

2I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows. 3And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— 4was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell.

If it’s good enough for Paul, it’s good enough for me.

Conclusion

Why is this important? Because so many people see the Bible as being irrelevant to our lives today. Plus the New Agers have a similar Ascension scenario which is either that we have to switch to 5D energy bodies moving into the Age of Aquarius, or we are all caught up in UFO’s to avoid total annihilation. This second idea has ramifications for our story because it might help explain alien intervention.

If I’ve said this once, I’ve said it a dozen times:

Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it.

Beings of Light: Angels or Demons?

Aliens_knowing

Who Are They, Really?

As you may have noticed, if you have read many of my posts here, that I have a certain discomfort with dualistic thinking. Why do things have to be categorized as one thing or the other? Why can’t they be both?

Extraterrestrials are a case in point. Depending on which side of the divide you fall on, they are either our saviours or our nemeses.

This struggle for our bodies and minds has been going on for millennia. It’s what keeps us separate and alienated.

Aliens

The word was originally intended to denote anything that was different or strange. Only in the last half century or so has it become synonymous with Space Beings. It is no wonder that this time has become known as the Space Age.

We have fouled our nest, Mother Earth, and now we want to fly away to somewhere new, somewhere where no man has gone before.

In the past, this urge could be satisfied with the discovery of an unknown country, exploration of natural wilderness, or deep sea diving. But now we are running out of space and time, seemingly.

Our focus has turned to the planets and stars. So, we look to our Space Brothers for help.

It’s a Test

If you follow the thread of what all the philosophers and mystics have been telling us since time immemorial, you will notice an interesting theme. The Golden Rule is the way it has been stated in the New Testament.

“Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Matthew 7:12)

Why would this same idea be presented over and over again in all societies and in all religious beliefs? Because it is the key to changing us and the world around us. In other words, when we realize that we are all in this together, everything will change for the better.

The Twilight Zone

For more than 50 years, we have been in this strange ‘twilight zone’ between what we, as a race, were in the past, and what we are becoming in the future.

The social networks are trying to wake us up to our potential. The ones in control don’t want this to happen because they are the only people who are supposed to survive and thrive when the world gets destroyed. They hope to hop a rocket to Mars, and leave us to our demise.

You don’t have to believe this to be true in order for it to happen. Look around you: we’re killing each other for whatever meagre resources remain, while they are laughing all the way to the bank.

When we will ever learn? (Paraphrased from Pete Seeger’s “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?”)

Conclusion

So I’m going to present you with an earth-shaking thought:

What if the Beings of Light are actually ourselves from the future, coming back to our past to help guide us to our better selves?

Enough said…

1978: a Pivotal Year

Superman

“You’ll believe a man can fly.”

Current Events that Influenced My Work

1978 was full of interesting things happening, almost every day of the year. It’s no surprise to me that some of those ‘things’ should creep into my screenplay My Satanic Struggle (MSS). For example, Superman (:The Movie) didn’t come out until December, but whatever was ‘in the air’ had already made its presence known to me.

John Paul I

pope-john-paul-i-1

How does a Pope only manage to reign 33 days? Later accounts tell of a conspiracy to murder him in his sleep. I picked up a hint of that at the time and wove it into the background plot of how Henry Evergreen took over the Pope’s residence in Rome.

JOE: Then what’s all this talk about “Religious Fever”?

BENJAMIN: It should be obvious: in the beginning of the COMMUNITY takeover, all the religious leaders who stood in Henry Evergreen’s way were E-E’d.

JOE: Is that the reason Evergreen had his personal living quarters in the Pope’s Vatican apartment in Rome?

BENJAMIN: Yes, he had the Pope E-E’d so he could move in.

Flying the Rainbow Flag

gilbaker-1

The rainbow flag, commonly known as the gay pride flag or LGBT pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements. Other older uses of rainbow flags include a symbol of peace and the colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, as the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride during LGBT rights marches. While this use of the rainbow flag originated in Northern California’s San Francisco Bay Area, the flag is now used worldwide.

Originally devised by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker, the design has undergone several revisions since its debut in 1978, first to remove colors then restore them based on availability of fabrics. The most common variant consists of six stripes: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The flag is typically flown horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as it would be in a natural rainbow. (Wikipedia)

1978 Gay Pride flag meaning

The LGBT Community symbolized by this flag got me to thinking about a NEWSPEAK version of the concept: COMMUNITY (Communist Unity). That’s where the inspiration for the One World Government in my screenplay came from.

The Community Service icon confirmed the concept visually for me.

What about ITS CLAWS?

Emperor Scorpion

There’s always a sting in the ‘tale’

Feminism was in its early resurgence in 1978 and echoing what the Suffragette movement went through in the first part of the 20th century, I decided to make ITS CLAWS a group of lesbian women terrorists.

A Wikipedia post on Mary Daly reports: In Gyn/Ecology (1978), she criticized the “Equal Rights” feminist framework. Many feminist thinkers consider the choice to use an “equality” lens (also known as an “equity” or “equality” framework) a distinctive mark of politically liberal, rather than politically radical or postmodern, feminisms. Daly’s argument was that the equality framework serves to distract women from the radical goal of altering or abolishing patriarchy as a whole, directing them instead towards gaining reforms within the existing system. According to Daly, such reforms leave women vulnerable because, though they grant nominal legal equality with men, the larger structures of patriarchy are left intact, and the later repeal of reforms is always possible. She also argued that the “equality” framework de-centers women from feminist thought when it encourages women to assimilate into male-dominated movements or institutions.

In other words, only the complete overthrow of the system was going to work. Even now the #metoo and #timesup revolutionary zeal requires more than just equality. .

Conclusion

This story is far from over, even as I write this. But, who’s to say what will come of it all?

Maybe Wonder Woman is the answer.

Wonder Woman
