Derveni Papyrus Found (January 15, 1962)

It’s all Greek to me…

The Derveni papyrus, Europe’s oldest surviving manuscript dating from 340 BCE, is found in Greece.

“The main part of the text is a commentary on a hexameter poem ascribed to Orpheus, which was used in the mystery cult of Dionysus by the ‘Orphic initiators’. Fragments of the poem are quoted, followed by interpretations by the main author of the text, who tries to show that the poem does not mean what it literally says. The poem begins with the words ‘Close the doors, you uninitiated’, a famous admonition to secrecy, also quoted by Plato. The interpreter claims that this shows that Orpheus wrote his poem as an allegory. The theogony described in the poem has Nyx (Night) give birth to Uranus (Sky), who becomes the first king. Cronus follows and takes the kingship from Uranus, but he is likewise succeeded by Zeus, whose power over the whole universe is celebrated. Zeus gains his power by hearing oracles from the sanctuary of Nyx, who tells him ‘all the oracles which afterwards he was to put into effect.’ At the end of the text, Zeus rapes his mother Rhea, which, in the Orphic theogony, will lead to the birth of Demeter. Zeus would then have raped Demeter, who would have given birth to Persephone, who marries Dionysus. However, this part of the story must have continued in a second roll which is now lost.

“The interpreter of the poem argues that Orpheus did not intend any of these stories in a literal sense, but they are allegorical in nature.

This poem is strange and riddling to people, though [Orpheus] did not intend to tell contentious riddles but rather great things in riddles. In fact he is speaking mystically, and from the very first word all the way to the last. As he also makes clear in the well recognized verse: for, having ordered them to “put doors to their ears,” he says that he is not legislating for the many [but addressing himself to those] who are pure in hearing … and in the following verse …

“The first surviving columns of the text are less well preserved, but talk about occult ritual practices, including sacrifices to the Erinyes (Furies), how to remove daimones that become a problem, and the beliefs of the magi. They include a quotation of the philosopher Heraclitus. Their reconstruction is extremely controversial, since even the order of fragments is disputed. Two different reconstructions have recently been offered, that by Valeria Piano and that by Richard Janko, who notes elsewhere that he has found that these columns also include a quotation of the philosopher Parmenides.” (Wikipedia)

What Does the Event Chart Look Like?

This timing was totally randomized, so I was surprised to see the Moon transiting the event horizon (Ascendant) exactly @ 23° Taurus 09′. Something must be going on here. There are two inconjuncts.

Mercury Inconjunct Pluto

On the positive side, this [aspect] means that you enjoy solving puzzles, tracking down mysteries and finding out about hidden matters.

On another level, this aspect can mean that at certain times in your life you will go through tremendous psychological changes. All your thoughts and opinions will change completely. These stages may seem difficult, but you will be much better off if you let go of the past and welcome the new ideas.

Saturn Inconjunct Uranus

On the positive side, if you can learn to live with this tension a bit and express your feelings and emotions before they reach the breaking point, you can be extremely patient and persistent. You will be able to accomplish many tasks that others would give up on, if you do not hold in all your feelings and desires for freedom.

So, what about the Moon, then?

Moon Conjunct Ascendant

You make an impression on others largely through your emotions. People always know how you feel about something, because you make no effort to hide it. Some may accuse you of wearing your heart on your sleeve, but most people will like you for it. You have the kind of honesty that others appreciate. This aspect means that you understand how people feel, and you can make them see your point of view. You sympathize with others, and in turn they are sympathetic to you. When you are older, you will be able to appeal to the feelings of the public at large, who will feel that you are one of them. Politicians, salespeople and others who appear before the public often have this aspect in their charts.

Opinion: The Pot is Calling the Kettle Black

False Flag Operations

OK. I’ve written about this before, but recent news suggests that the Russians are going to create a situation in Ukraine by attacking their sympathizers there in a ‘false flag’ operation. This is not new.

The term today extends to include countries that organize attacks on themselves and make the attacks appear to be by enemy nations or terrorists, thus giving the nation that was supposedly attacked a pretext for domestic repression and foreign military aggression

Wikipedia

The twist on this one is the fact that there will supposedly be just three operatives that will carry out the attack, and that they are Russian (or so US intelligence has discovered…)

Sounds like the Impossible Missions Force again.

Astrology: 1,440 Minutes in Every Day

Betty White Died on New Year’s Eve

A week before December 31, 2021, I wrote about the potential for a war with Russia. I included an ‘event’ chart timed for 12 midnight of that day (based on Washington, D.C.) That seemed enough to worry about. But then, on the day, we learned that Betty White passed on to the ‘other’ side in her sleep.

Immediately, I chose 5 am as her time of passing. And, true to form, there was Mars transiting the ‘event’ horizon, just like it has for others who have died. It is the planet of physical death, is it not?

The same inconjuncts are operating, but now Uranus is also inconjunct the Ascendant. Hmm.

I am reminded that Jesus is quoted as saying:

9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

John 11:19 KJV

I know what you’re thinking: how was Jesus to know that we presently divide the day (and the night) into twelve hours each, totaling 24 altogether? Only when you think outside the box do you begin to see that astrology may have been more influential to his understanding than we give it credit for.

Uranus Inconjunct Ascendant

Your need to be free and do what you want is often in conflict with what others require of you and even with what you feel you ought to do. Sometimes this conflict can cause considerable physical and emotional tension.

The restless energies of this aspect should be given some kind of release, because otherwise they can turn inward to create the kind of rash and compulsive actions

We have learned recently that she suffered a stroke a few days earlier, which would, in essence, restrict her mobility. Mars transiting the Ascendant would have given her the release she needed: ‘free at last’.

Her 100th Birthday would have been on Next Monday

Betty White (January 17, 1922 – December 31, 2021)

Wikipedia states that Betty White was active in show business from 1939 until 2021. That’s a good innings, as the British would say. And of course she was well-loved by the public.

I noticed years ago that the most attractive personalities (especially those who star on television) have Neptune conjunct the Ascendant in their birth charts. It adds a beautiful mystique to them.

This birth time was supposedly gleaned from a birth certificate, although my computer program suggested 7:10 pm instead. I’ll stick with 6:38 pm because it gives the Neptune/Ascendant aspect to the chart. There are three inconjuncts.

Mercury Inconjunct Pluto

You have a rather complicated and sometimes tricky mind. You usually prefer to do things in roundabout and involved ways instead of being simple and direct.

On the positive side, this means that you enjoy solving puzzles, tracking down mysteries and finding out about hidden matters. You have a natural ability to understand how peoples’ minds work, what makes them act as they do, and what they are thinking.

Venus Inconjunct Ascendant

You often feel that you haven’t any right to ask much of those whom you love. You feel that you must do favors for them instead of asking for their help. For you, love is an act of service, not self-gratification. Your close friends and loved ones discover that you are quite different in a close relationship than you appear at first. It is not that you are dishonest, but that you are not entirely confident in that role. You may feel unsure that others will like you or accept your affection. This is one reason why you express your love by doing nice things for people. You are trying to win them over.

Saturn Inconjunct Uranus

This aspect indicates a serious tension in your life between freedom and restriction. Many people have this conflict, but in your case the tensions may be so severe that you express them physically as muscle tension and possibly nervousness. You feel that somehow you must keep everything in your life under tight control, but that if you let go, the whole structure will fall apart. In a very real and direct sense, you must learn to relax.

So, what is it about Neptune?

Neptune Conjunct Ascendant

You will spend a great deal of your life getting to know who you are and how you impress other people. Especially while you are young, but sometimes continuing well into adulthood, you will have a hard time understanding people’s attitudes toward you and your part in creating these attitudes.

Some of your problems stem from the fact that you look to other people’s reactions to find out who you are, when you should be looking inside yourself to find that out. Get in touch with your feelings about yourself instead of being confused. Also don’t fall into the trap of simply feeling inadequate and unworthy. These feelings are probably not justified, but you may think that they are. Another source of difficulty is that this aspect signifies enormous sensitivity to people and situations around you. But unfortunately you get so much input from the environment that you find it difficult to make sense of it. When you eventually sort it out, you will discover that you are quite psychic or at least intuitive.

Also learn to stand up for your rights and not let others take advantage of you. You may feel that it is better to serve others than to be served, but don’t waste your efforts on people who are unworthy of being served.

Very often when people with this aspect get in touch with their real feelings, they make the astonishing discovery that they can project themselves to others in many ways, as if they have different personalities for different people and situations. You may or may not be a professional actor, but you will probably do quite a bit of acting in your everyday life. Just try to avoid getting a reputation for being deceptive and untrustworthy. At your core you have to be honest with others, even if you enjoy seeming mysterious and elusive.

The Most Famous Songwriter of the 19th Century

Stephen Foster (July 4, 1826 – January 13, 1864)

1940 commemorative stamp

Even as a child, I knew that the beautiful songs that Stephen Foster wrote were bordering on non-PC, before I understood the phrase. As they were part of the minstrel shows (the Christie Minstrels, in particular), they would have been sung in black-face, something that is considered so wrong now.

His songs also voiced black sentiments, about missing family members, and the old folks at home, but from a strictly white perspective. Only later in life did he side with a slavery abolitionist.

The timing of this birth chart is considered accurate because someone has seen his birth certificate. Really?

There are many biographies of Foster, but details differ widely. Among other issues, Foster wrote very little biographical information himself, and his brother Morrison Foster destroyed much information that he judged to reflect negatively upon the family.

Wikipedia

Venus Inconjunct Neptune

This aspect means that your attitudes about love and affection are very idealistic, as will become clearer later in life. Also it can be a sign of creative artistic ability if there are other indications of creativity in your chart. And, of course, you must begin the appropriate training while you are young. (Self-taught.)

Mars Inconjunct Pluto

You have a strong will and always want to have your own way. But very often it seems as if tremendous forces are working to prevent you from getting what you want. If you have this problem, it is because of the way you go about trying to achieve your ends. If you put too much force into your desire to get something, you may unknowingly alienate people because your aggressive manner shows that you will let nothing stop you from getting what you want.

Foster Died Today, 158 Years Ago

Ooh, ooh, me first! Unknown time of death, so the clock is set for noon. Pluto transiting the event Ascendant? Foul deed is suspected. But the only two options given are: ‘accidentally’ cutting his throat when he fell in his apartment; or committing suicide.

Historian JoAnne O’Connell speculates in her biography, The Life and Songs of Stephen Foster, that Foster may have killed himself, a common occurrence during the Civil War. George Cooper, who was with Foster until he died, said: “He lay there on the floor, naked, suffering horribly. He had wonderful big brown eyes, and they looked up at me with an appeal I can never forget. He whispered, ‘I’m done for.'” Unlike Foster’s brother Morrison, who was not in New York and said Foster was ill and cut his neck on a washbasin, Cooper mentioned no broken crockery and also said Foster had a “large knife” for cutting up apples and turnips. Morrison may have covered up Foster’s suicide. Evelyn Morneweck, Morrison’s daughter, also said the family would have covered up the suicide of their uncle if they could have.

Wikipedia

The Yod pointing at Uranus (from the Sun/Midheaven on one hand and the Jupiter/North Node on the other) speaks of a suddenness to the event. But the inconjuncts involving Pluto/Ascendant and Venus, suggests a love rival (in my humble opinion). We will probably never know the truth.

Why Some Pets Seem More Like Friends to Us

Susan and Kaiya

This might seem outrageous, too, but I swear that astrology plays a big role in how pets and their owners get along. Compare my wife’s birth chart with that of our latest acquisition.

Does there not seem to be about ten specific planetary connections between them? Especially significant is Kaiya’s Uranus on Susan’s Descendant. Kaiya gets excited every time Susan comes home from her travels. I especially like the almost exact conjunction between Susan’s Pluto and Kaiya’s Part of Fortune.

These two were made for each other.

Christopher and BeBe

There aren’t a lot of pictures with both BeBe and myself in evidence. This one has my hand and leg in it.

This comparison doesn’t have as many ‘hits’ but a couple of them are significant: BeBe’s Mercury is on my Descendant, and her Moon is almost exactly conjunct my Mercury. I guess we’re on the same wavelength. BeBe’s North Node/Neptune is conjunct my natal Sun, while her South Node/Ascendant is conjunct my natal Pluto. And her Part of Fortune is conjunct my North Node. So, you could say we’re karmically connected.

Altogether, we’re just one big happy family.

Does Astrology Work with Our Dogs, Too?

BeBe (May 24, 2008)

On Christmas Day, 2021

I have a fairly easy relationship with my dog. She tells me what she wants, and I do it. She’s quietly assertive in other ways, too. When we go for a walk, she leads the way, or tries to deviate from the path.

Again her birth details are sketchy, at best. I think she was born in Barrie, Ontario. I have set the clock for noon again, just to see what stands out, when compared to her personality. The Yods speak volumes.

Moon Inconjunct Mercury (probable)

As you grow older, you will have to learn to make your feelings and your reason work together. The problem is not so much that they come into conflict with each other, but that your reason and feelings represent two very different sides of your personality. When you are calm and collected and able to reflect carefully, you make decisions in one way. But when you are emotionally involved in a situation, you are likely to make up your mind very differently, which could cause you to seem inconsistent to others and make it difficult for them to understand you. (She is curious about other dogs, and then barks when they seem too close to her.)

Moon Inconjunct Ascendant (maybe)

This aspect ties together in you a Moon sign and a rising sign that are very different. This indicates that the image you project to others does not reveal very much about your real feelings. When you are upset, you surprise people by showing a totally different side of your personality. If you read the description of your Ascendant sign and your Moon sign, you will see the difference between these two aspects of yourself. (She has been known to bite the hand of someone trying to rub her head.)

Mercury Inconjunct Jupiter (definite)

You like to think big, and you have great ambitions, but you don’t always make sure that your thinking is clear or careful. Don’t try to take on more than you can handle and make sure not to overlook details, for that could hurt what you are trying to do. (Taking on dogs that are a lot bigger comes to mind.)

Venus Inconjunct Pluto (for sure)

(Like Kaiya) this aspect may mean that you are very possessive and demanding of your loved ones.

Jupiter Inconjunct Ascendant (possible)

With this aspect, you may discover that in order to grow and get ahead in life, you will have to put aside your own needs and do whatever the situation or other people require. At times you will go through tremendous and possibly painful creative changes in your life, in which everything that you are is replaced by a new order. Your environment may change radically, or you may lose all your old friends and find a whole set of new ones. (She came to live with us in 2014, and her whole world changed.)

Uranus Inconjunct Ascendant (also likely)

Your need for freedom may interfere with your close relationships. When you are with others, even those you like, you feel very restless but you can’t get up and leave because you want to be with them. This is typical of the ambiguity that comes from this transit. Certainly, the more others try to restrict your freedom of movement, the more you try to get away. (When she’s snooping around our back garden, she is totally in her own world.)

Conclusions

I used to think that her ‘two-minds’ personality was just down to her being born under the influence of Gemini. Now I understand the ‘bigger’ picture, it makes me think that her dog’s purpose this time around was to recreate a past-life situation (South Node conjunct Ascendant, North Node conjunct Neptune on the Descendant). She truly may have been my dog from 1955: Columbus.

Does Astrology Work with Our Pets?

Kaiya (July 19. 2017)

It’s a thought that never goes away: are our pets subject to the same planetary influences as we are?

Our parrot’s ‘hatch’ time is unknown ( when she hatched out of her egg). I’ve set the clock for noon, just to see what jumps out at me. Of course, that makes her Libra Rising, just like her ‘mother’ Susan. Hmm.

Venus Inconjunct Pluto

This aspect may mean that you are very possessive and demanding of your loved ones. You may not want to accept the fact that your friends can love other people besides yourself. Let your friends be themselves freely when they are with you, and try not to be too demanding of their time. Love for friends and relatives should be given freely, not used as a way to control them. If you do that, you will lose their love.

Kaiya sometimes attacks Susan’s daughter, Tracy (shown here)

Jupiter Inconjunct Neptune

You are an idealist with very vivid dreams about how you want your life to be, and at certain times in your life you will follow those dreams with all your energy. But sometimes these idealistic dreams will let you down, because you are not concerned enough with what is real and possible.

By itself, this aspect does not guarantee that you will have such problems, but if it is reinforced by other, similar aspects in your chart, you should certainly be careful of a tendency toward escapism.

Kaiya in her travel cage

Conclusion

It might seem laughable to some people that a couple of aspects can describe our parrot so well. But doesn’t that tell us something about the nature of reality in this 3D world? All are ruled by the stars.

We’re All Walking on Eggshells

January is Mental Health Month

This image reminds me of the Roman God Janus, for whom January is named.

In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces. The month of January is named for Janus (Ianuarius).

Wikipedia

So, the symbolism of a god who looks both ways is very fitting when we consider the issue of mental health. Dr. Phil had two programs this week that showed how one young lady was consumed by conflicting thoughts, based in part by therapy that uncovered impressions of alleged sexual abuse by her father when she was very young. This led to anorexia in the present, which completely occupies her mind, day and night, and doesn’t allow her to look forward to anything in her future. She says that only her eating disorder keeps her alive!

.

We can only imagine how this situation must feel for her. The expressions on her face tell the whole story, at least to me: she’s tormented by her thoughts.

There is no simple solution to bring about mental health (the NEWSPEAK phrase for mental illness). We are what we think we are. So, how can a person change their thoughts, especially if they think whatever is bothering them is real? And that’s the rub. Our ego’s job is to warn us about danger (real and imagined). It wants to be able to say to us, at the end of the day, “See, I told you so.”

I have family members (one sister and one daughter) who suffer this way. Neither of them is anorexic, but that doesn’t make it any better for the rest of us. We have to walk on eggshells in order not to set them off.

I haven’t heard from either Rachel or Anne yet — are they doing OK? How’s Elizabeth? I’m a bit sorry that I didn’t get to see her this time, but maybe it was to prevent me from taking the blame for contributing to the cause of her returning to hospital. This way I know I’m not directly involved, although I can’t be sure she wasn’t aware at some level that i was around.

My Letter to Mom dated October 25, 1994

So, what to do, what to do?

Can it really be that simple?
